This is the thread for the discussion of the wonderful game of pinball.

A beautiful Future Spa appeared at one of my locations today. I love these early solid-state Bally games, especially the widebodies (another nearby arcade has Hotdoggin', and I've turned the counter over on the Space Invaders table at a big convention). Future Spa in particular has a really great layout with things like the lane looping around the eject, the far left side "kicker", and of course those Bally inline drop targets.

What pinball have you been playing recently?

Is there any other reason behind why pinball machines are so high scoring other than because pinball players are foolish enough to be subconsciously excited by really high numbers? Don't get offended if you're a lover of really high numbers, I think it's great that you've found something to enjoy.

Big numbers look cooler and feel more satisfying to score than smaller numbers, simple as that.
No need for subconscious shenanigans, I consciously know I like my numbers big. But there's a balance to this, though. Some pinball machine go a bit too far on their BIG scoring and it starts to feel artificial and hokey when every single target seems to award millions or even tens of millions and game scores have like half a dozen zeros at the end, implying they're just there for looks. The really big jackpots and awards still need to feel significant compared to the ordinary ones. Attack From Mars comes to mind as an example. Kick ass machine, but the scoring could use removing some of the zero padding.

FX 3 is made-up impossible tables, the two arcades are simulations of real tables, visual pinball is a free software that's been around for along time. The three paid games all come with one free table. I think there might be one more game for steam.

Interesting, probably the first time I've heard someone ranking Timeshock as their least favorite post-The Web PP tables. Any particular reasons it's at the bottom of your ranking?

For me, FJ's table design lacks that certain feeling of flow that TS and BRUSA have with their connecting shots and combos, instead going for a more old school feeling stop-and-go gameplay approach. Many of its game modes also feel less varied to me than those on TS and BRUSA. For example the main quest modes in FJ all follow the same pattern of hitting the currently lit target while occasionally hitting the spinner to keep the mode active.

Timeshock isn't exactly low just i think it's a little over deep and it's just annoying somehow, defo more of a drain monster.Pic related is my pb for FJ btw which cleared the table twice, currently trying to break a billion in brusa.

Oh yeah, definitely does. FJ clearly has that classic, focused approach to its table design as opposed to the sprawling TS and BRUSA.
Funny, apart from the initial learning curve, I don't time TS to be particular drain monster, though its left and right ramps are a hazard zone. Along the course of the game you'll need to make a LOT of those ramp shots to charge the timedrive and any miss that bounces off the side of the ramps can be dangerous, especially if it puts the ball in a fast horizontal motion.

Been a few years since I actually played Pinball (I used to play every night). Saw this machine while waiting for my movie and gave it a try.

It's either the absolute worst table I've ever played or is neglected as fuck.

Objective:
>Nothing really fun, all the challenges are dull. Sound design was garbage.
>Ring area at the top has these weird bar flippers that make an annoying as fuck sound whenever you flip. Even at max volume the audio cant be heard over CLACK CLACK CLACK
>The only decent way to score is to use the top flippers to get the ball into the hole at the top. Flippers are weird as fuck (They are just lengthwise bars that push) and you cant see anything up there
>Seems like it was designed to send the ball out of reach of the flippers very often. I'd say I had to shove one in four times to keep the ball in play

Technical:
>Ball got stuck coming out of the ring (Where the guy is pictured with his hands out at the top). Machine tried to fix it but couldn't. Ended up having to jerk the machine so hard I tripped the tilt. This happened for that entire credit
>Speaking of tilt you need to fucking tackle this table to cause a tilt. I gave it some hard shoves and only got a warning. I was afraid the shitty plastic legs would break under it
>Entrance skill shots are worth nothing and are so much worse points/setup wise to sending the ball to the back it's not even funny

I was playing this a week ago and trying to figure out what I thought of it overall. I don't think it's that bad, but it's probably the weakest of the post-AC/DC Stern games. The layout isn't very fun and none of the modes or scoring features really grab my attention like Metallica/Star Trek/Star Wars etc. do. The sound design is indeed miserable. The only speech clip with any oomph to it is the "Welcome to Wrestlemania!" opening line. The theme songs for the different wrestlers are nice, but the music is very low on my machine.

I haven't made it too far into the later modes, so I'll have to go back and play it some more.

This is my 1980 Williams Firepower. It really is a fun as hell table with a terrific rule set.

I have all new boards in there, including a Rottendog MPU327 and Rottendog power supply, along with a Swemmer sound board. The table has been waxed, and I installed a protector over it. Ball slides BEAUTIFULLY now. All new LED's as well. I had to go with colored LEDs though, because my backglass has some open areas, and finding a new one in suitable shape is next to impossible. The LED's do help.

The only other thing I really want to do with it is maybe get a reflection-free playfield glass for it.

Well fuck... :|

Pinball Arcade has to be among the most frustrating game I've ever come across. The honestly ridiculous table pack selling model notwithstanding, the premise couldn't be more awesome: tons of officially licensed, really well done (for the most part) recreations of real life pinball tables. What could go wrong? Yeah... the physics. When they're off, a pinball simulation just falls flat on its ass, with no redemption possible from any other features.
And what makes it even more infuriating is that the physics in PA aren't laughably off and so shitty it's funny. No, it's just decent enough that it's possible to almost start suspending your disbelief and getting into the simulation, and then you begin noticing all the flaws and quirks that then immediately start sticking out like a sore thumb and make the game unbearable.
No ball spin, balls are floaty af, nudging the table is complete ass on keyboard (Really? Keyboard nudging is full force all the time?! Like Timeshock didn't have variable force nudging in 1997...), no feeling of varied friction change anywhere (flipper handling kind of depends on that...), some ball movements seem scripted and happen the exact same way every time, etc.
Such a massive shame. I would REALLY love to like Pinball Arcade, but the physics just break the illusion. It would have been so glorious with the Pro Pinball physics model...

They're fucking gremlins. I haven't even gotten my TNA yet but here I am buying a game this weekend

Casuals don't care about points. Even during pac-mania, a lot of players didn't care about points.
What statistics do they care about? Kill-death ratios. The price of bitcoin. Box office grosses. Rotten Tomatoes scores. Views. Likes. Favorites. Subscribers. So make a pinball machine where one of those is the score and another is the secondary score, like ghosts in Ghostbusters or Gold in GoT. I don't know if other people enjoy thinking about this stuff; it's fun for me. I could see how other people might be annoyed by it.
