maybe he meant in real-time, but Castlevania 2 did it in real time in almost the exact same fashion as OoT, and that was a year before Dragon Quest 3

>> No.4575876

>>4575868
Not him but neither DQ nor Castlevania really have a system that's comparable to OoT's day/night cycle. What made OoT's system interesting was that day and night made the game a very different place. Some enemies only came out at day/night, some skulltulas only appeared at night, some shops were only closed or open at day or night, certain events only happened at particular times, etc. By comparison, the cycle in a game like Castlevania 2 is very limited and really just acts as a modifier for enemies. OoT was the first game where day and night made for a very different game experience and a lot of content was relegated to a particular time of day.

>> No.4575878

>>4575868
I don't see the difference. There's a set amount of time for the day/night sequences in Castlevania, Dragon Quest, and OoT. Are do you mean how they pause if you're in towns & shops for the NES titles?

>> No.4575879

>>4575876
Dragon Quest is like that too. Perhaps the monster spawns don't change, but NPCs change what they're doing and where they are between day & night. Heck I distinctly remember one part of DQ4 that requires you to talk to someone at night.

I agree, I don't even understand what anon was really trying to demonstrate with that image other than to say Zelda is better, but it wasn't a very complete thought. Regardless, OoT was probably the first game to implement a day/night cycle that really contributed to making the world fill alive.

the shopes and enemies thing is in castlevania 2 as well. You do have a point about the skulltullas. It's like a much simpler version of the light/dark world from LttP in that in doesn't physically change the world, but what actually makes it quite special to OoT is not the day/night cycle itself but that the fact that it is that it's layered on top of the child/adult time period which is basically OoT's reiteration of the Light/Dark worlds. How many games had a day/night cycle layered on top of parallel overworlds?

Oh boy, here we go.

Alright retardoid, first off, a game having muh swords and dragons doesn't make it an RPG. Technically, any game with a recognizable character is an RPG. Donkey Kong could be a fucking RPG by this autistic standard. So, if we really want to define what is generally considered to be an RPG, we look at the mechanics most typical "RPGs" consist of: combat-focused gameplay, character classes, stats and skill trees, loot, all of that. Zelda doesn't have that. Zelda is only an RPG in the same way you would call Donkey Kong an RPG.

No, Zelda is an adventure game. An adventure game is a game where you go on a fucking adventure. You explore, solve puzzles, talk to characters, collect items with particular uses, and maybe engage in some degree of combat. That's an adventure game. That's Zelda. That's not an RPG.

Now shut the fuck up.

Didn't read the thread, but what makes a RPG a RPG? I would say final fantasy is more of an adventure game than a RPG. Can't really say I know much RPGS aside from dungeon crawlers that I would say they are RPGS. Open world and choices that shape world, combined with the character being a blank paper that the user can fill in himself in the context of imposed setting/world? Following this definition, old type dungeon crawlers aren't RPGs. Like Diablo, might and magic. As well as games with linear worlds like Fallout 1.

The thing you have to realize about the N64 library is that it's small and there are a handful (say, 10 or so) games which everyone immediately associates with it, but then there's a treasure trove of really great stuff that most people don't know about. For example, if you like puzzlers, Wetrix and Tetrisphere are seriously two of the best games ever made and nobody ever talks about them. If you have any particular kinds of games you like, let me know and I'll be glad to give you thorough recommendations as I'm probably the biggest N64 autist on this board.

As for emulation, honestly, N64 emulation is shit. A lot of retards will tell you otherwise but they're wrong. If you really want to explore the library and don't feel like dropping a ton of cash, just buy an Everdrive and get a used CRT off CL for like $10, sometimes even free.

Emulation is fine for testing out the catalogue, but if you want the best experience, I think original hardware is a better option. Emulation is functional, but requires you to fiddle around configs too much (multiple times during playthroughs sometimes), and sometimes some minor errors might still not go away.
Also, some games don't control as well with other controllers.

Next: I asked a question

So yes, never did I say FF7 is not an RPG. You have some problems.

This. N64 is so goddamn superior with a flashcart. I was playing the other day with a friend a 2 random dudes that were his friends and you could see the joy in their faces while playing bomberman, mario kart 64, the mini games of pokemon stadium or turok rage wars. The console is just THAT good, so easy to pick up and play no matter who you are or what you've played before.

Good taste my friend, and you're right. I don't know what it is, but there' something uniquely special about the N64 that causes people to gravitate towards it. It has a ton of great multiplayer experiences, a ton of great singleplayer experiences, and this insanely tight, compact library that despite its size has so much to offer. I always find myself playing games on other consoles and thinking "yeah... this is cool... but there's a similar game on N64 that's way better". Can't find a better shooter than Perfect Dark, can't find a better racer than F-Zero or Mario Kart, can't find a better fighter than Smash or Killer Instinct, on and on. I mean fuck, for as few RPGs as it has, I still can't find one better than Paper Mario. Not mention so easy to pick up and play like you said, no load times, 4 player heaven, built like a fucking tank... man, just such a good console in every way.

"A role-playing game (sometimes spelled roleplaying game[1][2] and abbreviated to RPG) is a game in which players assume the roles of characters in a fictional setting. Players take responsibility for acting out these roles within a narrative, either through literal acting or through a process of structured decision-making or character development.[3] Actions taken within many games succeed or fail according to a formal system of rules and guidelines.[4]"

I repeat my question: how is FF7 an RPG? More than any other game.

Absolutely, and one of the things I really love is that a lot of the games have this weird, experimental yet ethereal visuals. They are like a fever dream lost in the 90's. Also the very good games for the console are like a good punch in the chin. Everything after the fifth gen of consoles got so polished that kind of lost the magic for me.

Can we please, for the love of god, stop being so embarassing as a board?
You all keep complaining about /v/ and *eddit, yet most of you act like you're from those places.
Can we all please for once be civilized and stop with all of the sperging? I get that some of you may legit have mental issues, but holy shit, arguing about stuff that mattered only 15 years ago is abominably stupid, especially when posts like this start appearing every day because somebody desperately craves for attention.

>got the best adventure games
PS1 was better.
>got the best racers
PS1 was better.
>got the best puzzlers
PS1 was better.
>got the best multiplayer games
Because the hardware supported 4 players by default, the PS1 had better and more multiplayer games (sadly, most were 2 players only)

Joke thread? PS1 library shits so hard on N64's it's not even funny, the Saturn library is also superior if one counts all the good games released only in Japan.
