God what a fantastic game! Never played it around initial but had heard about it and picked it up for my saturn a couple years back. The gameplay, the music, the exploration, THAT FUCKING WATER PALACE! Had played Metroid Prime but I think Exhumed has it beat in my books.

Share you experiences. Mainly of console versions but also PC if you wish.

That's a game that I wanted to play when I was a kid but I never owned a Saturn. I remember looking at pictures of the game in VG magazines and thinking how cool the game was.

I don't see anything that really makes the game ahead of its time. Seems like it was at the right time and place.

I love the game(s) but people tend to exagerate on it. It's not Metroid at all, it's not a huge interconnected world with backtrack, it may have been the first FPS do have you unlock new areas in previous stages using new power-ups... but the only thing new about that is the fact that a FPS did it, and it's not something that became a genre staple.

One thing though that people need to realize is that the Saturn version was developped at the same time as Quake, released only a few months afterwards. So in terms of 3D FPS level design, it was quite novel when it was being made... But Quake beat them to it.

I see it as student surpassing its master.
The development team basically made better doom engine than Carmack.

Which did you play?

PS1 version is the same as the original but about 3-4 stages are different. It also plays and feels much worse and they got rid of bomb jumping and other sequence breaking means. Only thing they did better were the hidden team dolls.

DOS version is a completely different game with some of the same assets. But it's a good game with great level design. Make sure you download the retail versions as it's easier to stumble on beta and bad rips on warez sites. The date on the .exe shoud be March 19 1997 (for Exhumed) and December 04 1996 (for Powerslave), and you should have music.

At first I thought this was just gonna be another dumb fps, which I was ok with but as soon as I get your first power-up (the higher jump ability), the game just clicked and I knew I was in for a good time.
