This store just opened up in Little Tokyo in Los Angeles. They sell imported Japanese retro games, and they're expanded from a store in Akihabara, Tokyo.

Now that I've died and gone to heaven, any essential Japanese retro games you guys recommend?

I'm down for anything, but for now let's start with Game Boy since I bought an SP and a copy of Mother 3 there. They didn't have any copies of Fire Emblem but they said those are coming soon. Anything else you'd recommend?

Lots of Wizardry, a few Megatens, Star Ocean, Survival Kids 2, Taro the Alien and that's without even getting into GBA. GBA isn't considered retro by /vr/'s criteria although you can probably get away with sprinkling a bit in the context of this type of thread.

There's no shortage of people critical of any methodology that produces results they don't like. Vg Chartz attempts to track very current trends in the industry in a way that is presented in a way that suggests real-time accuracy when in fact their current data is estimates based on weighted averages using formulas that aren't public and are known to factor in online discussion trends that have nothing directly to do with sales. However they also accumulate historical data as accurately as possible. Nintendo especially was known to outright conceal unflattering sales figures, requiring other sources like shipping and retailer extrapolation to arrive at numbers that were never contested and therefore can be assumed as fairly accurate if not generous. Their historical figures, like those I posted can safely be considered the most accurate available and their current numbers even hotly controversial ones end up being at most ~10% off the ultimate historical ones.

tl;dr it's just typical nerd tears

Here's the vgsales wiki data for Japan which presents its sources. You'll see that the data as of 1999 is closely in line with vgchartz. There is some very questionable Saturn numbers in 2001 that maybe represents some kind of liquidation(?) >> No.4568037

>>4567996
Basically all those Play It stores were a cartel that converted other struggling used game stores into one chain that fixed their prices using eBay as their standard which quickly put many of them out of business. I certainly stopped going to the one on South High the moment they refused to honor a tagged price without checking eBay. That having been said, the one in Clintonville is the closest one to the campus and (along with the HPB on Lane) is a magnet for a lot of interesting stuff that I stocked up on back when more obscure shit was still cheap and I saved paying shipping. I'm sure that if one were to develop a rapport with some of the bros there that he could get the hookup on some stuff that's been sitting around - they often have some cool stuff behind the counter that nobody seems very interested in stuffing onto overfull shelves.

that isn't ALWAYS the case
but, i will say its more like "they sold that SNES and 50 games for $20 just FIVE FUCKING MINUTES before you showed up" and you will see a guy in his early 50s walking away with it.

better general rule:
map shit out the night before with yardsales, make a path, hit the ones that have pics or SAY they have games in the post first.

always ALWAYS ask if they have any games, a TON of people put that shit in the basement or attic and forget about them.

for flea markets, get there AS FUCKING EARLY AS YOU CAN. if it opens at 7am, get there at fucking 6:30 so you can get in ASAP.

i been doing flea markets for over 20 years now and my market is super fucking competitive now in the last 2 years. good thing is, i can show up as early as people start setting up, as early as like 3-4 am. guys like me are the reason you aren't finding shit strolling in at 9 and walking around til 12.

get a knack for either knowing WHAT you want to look for, knowing what the systems boxes or carts look like and being able to spot that at 500ft away.

more importantly, if someone is setting up, ask (nicely) if they have games. they ususally will bring them out and you have cart blanch to grab what you want.

one person didn't know what they had, so when i said about games, i said nintendo tapes (what we used to call them 30 years ago) and it clicked and they pulled out several boxes and i got like 5 NES, 2 SNES, a gameboy and like 60 games for $20 because they wanted it all gone.

usually missing pieces, but i find them in weird places, like the garbage.

i recommend checking the trash too, you find shit every now and again. just 2 days ago, some dumbass tossed out a bag of 15 N64 games to the curb.

had buck bumble, kirby 64, mario 64 and mega man 64 among other games. but its like, why? i mean, fuck i got them for free, but shit, i would have hated to see them crushed.

dude, i have been finding games in the trash for years now. not all the time, but holy shit man, people just toss this shit to the curb or take it to recycling centers.

i've saved so many fucking games from being smashed and shit, lots of big box PC games too.

Wait. So they were only open for ONE day, and won't reopen until their actual grand opening on March 1st? Is that right? I really want to go before then. But, I live in Orange County, and don't want to drive down for nothing. Can anyone confirm this?

I am so jealous, people from California get everything while my local game stores look like this pic. The closest "little Tokyo" here is a Chinese take-out place with food made by authentic people from south of the border. I want that F-zero Climax for $20USD so bad, out here that would go for $66, cart alone, and that's with the box and everything in >>4566217 it fucking sucks in my area. I just don't get it, property costs out in LA must be super expensive, and to offer prices like the ones seen blows my mind. You are so fortunate.

not him but there is a difference between being into japanese stuff and being a retarded fucking weeaboo. I grew up watching dbz, card captors and that cartoon network toonami shit back when anime was first really starting to take off here and I never turned into a nippon supremacist weeb faggot. Weeb is an insult although a lot of people who are into japanese culture and hobbies call themselves that ironically its kind of lost its impact so instead of meaning retarded japanophile it just means someone who is into anime
