No, actually it is called Doki Doki Panic (preceded by Yume Koujou, but that is normally omitted wen discussing it in the west).

I was always under the impression that Doki Doki Panic was a limited release promotional game and that it being retooled into a Mario game was largely because Shigi really liked it and wanted it to see wider release. I wasn't aware it took 5 (five!) years for it to make its way back to Japan. I'm having a hard time finding sales figures for DDP because it's absolutely overwhelmed by "didja no" pages, at least in English. Was it offered at disk writer kiosks?

It's the same game with minor changes, most positive. A kid used to Doki Doki Panic trying Mario USA for the first time would probably appreciate the ability to run and to change characters between every stage instead of just between every world, but they'd miss the ability to save.

You don't need to save though, being that you only need to play through the game once, instead of having to beat it on all 4 characters.

Shiggy was involved in developing DDP while he had nothing at all to do with SMB2j.

Wait a second, guys. Are you implying that Super Mario Brothers 2 - or the game that WE know as Super Mario Brothers 2 - isn't actually an original electronic gaming experience, but, in reality, a modified replication of a game released in the Land of the Rising Sun, initially entitled "Yume Kōjō Doki-Doki Panic?" Is that what you're telling me?

There is no scrolling, so every time you get to the edge of the screen it goes black for 1-2 seconds, which is really just wonderful for when the game cuts off important jumps and pits at the edge of the screen.

Is there any difference, besides the title screen, between this and the American version of Super Mario Bros. 2?
I have both, and they seem identital, but I swear certain parts are *slightly* different. I think the Birdo shortcut in the beginning is one block taller in SM USA than it is in SMB2.
Am I imagining things?
