Does this board consider Sonic Jam the best way to play the classic Sonic games?

For Sonic 1, yeah. The spindash is a great addition. Sonic 2 has slowdowns though and 3&K has sound glitches.

The thing that really bothered me more than anything else was the wrong ring sound effects. I liked that you could marathon the halfpipe stages though, good fun trying to see how long you could last

Pretty much.
You can always go back an play the originals on MD if you want the correct sound effects (honestly I didn't notice until it was pointed out to me, and I still hardly tell the difference).
The slowdown on Sonic 2 is the only real issue, but it's only slightly worse than the slowdown on the original, it's not a deal breaker.
The main reason to prefer Jam over anything else nowadays is the time trials.
I've already played Sonic countless hours, I rarely feel like marathoning a Sonic game nowadays. So Jam allows me to play in short sessions and pick whatever zone and act I want to run through, and it saves my top 3 time records.
It's sweet.

Sonic Jam is fucking awful, with muddy sound, the music keeps restarting instead of speeding up / fading in-out, and the sound effects are sometimes bad.

Just play the Megadrive originals.

This sound complaint is actually very exaggerated. As >>4564357 said, the actual issue is the slowdown on 2. The rest is nitpicky and outdone by the extra features it has.
I'd say, play the originals on MD if it's your very first time with the games. If you've played plenty of times already, go with Jam.

Easy mode and normal are fun. Taxman should port them over. Normal mode removes bugs.

The slowdown is in genesis sonic 2.

They're ports not emulation so the sound is different on purpose.
