Ever played a not-so-good game but you kept playing because the music was so good? Did you ever recorded the music on a casette tape so you can listen to it with your Walkman?

---------------

Opening with Robo Aleste for Sega CD. Pretty basic shooter, but man, that soundtrack was KILLER!

I thought Sonic CD was okay, but switching to the JP ost actually made me appreciate the game a whole lot more. Come to think of it, tons of Genesis games fit that bill

Robo Aleste is anything but ordinary. It's a sequel in one of the most famous STG series. I prefer MUSHA Aleste, but it's still pretty damn good.

It' a 2D shooter so it's automatically ordinary for a lot of people for some reason.

Spiderman VS Kingpin for Sega CD is not that great. But the soundtrack is pure 1990's metal cheese. And I like it.

arcade games are designed to suck up quarters, not to be challenging for the sake of it like a console only game. they retain fans but most gamers do not want to subject themselves to games designed to kill you and get more quarters. people interpret this, and maybe rightfully so, ass the pussification of gamers

>> No.4557181

I honestly think that everyone has this experience with the game.

I fucking hated it until I switched to the JP/EU OST, and still listen to it when I get a chance because it's so good.

It makes me think that most people who really dislike this game are usually Americans or the ones who played with the US soundtrack.

>> No.4557410

>>4557171
They are not "designed to kill you", they are just not made with the average player in mind to be able to beat it the first time. You get killed by the virtue of them being very demanding yet still possible blind most of the time.
They reward skill. Console games used to be hard only to try to emulate the arcade feel at home since they were popular. Once they died, console games gradually abandoned their arcade roots and became borderline movies and/or progress system fests where the only thing you need to do to win is to waste enough time without improving yourself.

Again, remember: arcade games had to satisfy two demands.
1: Owners. They demanded that the games were profitable.
2: Players. Of course, they demanded that the games were fun to play.
What arcade devs figured out to do in this harsh environment was to make the games very difficult and short, but also making them feel as much fair and immediately and constantly fun as possible.
This is why arcade games were so good. They had to be hard and fun to even survive. It's the exact opposite of the modern trend of easier "games".

You can sell games just with marketing and hype now (look at all the preordering crap). Good luck doing this with arcades where your shovelware is exposed by a mere coin or by watching others play it. No profits and bam, the game is out of the center, replaced by a better one.

Verytex is an average to below average shmup, but goddamn if that soundtrack doesn't blow up the Genesis. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqxUe27KFyk

Another one is Cosmic Carnage. Below average fighter on the much maligned 32X, fantastic soundtrack. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9S5_JeiCrzs&list=PL11FF27D7C55EBACD&index=3

Contrarianism is cancer. Fuck off already. Toaplan rules even if CGR can't shut up about Truxton. I'm pretty sure he's self-aware that mentioning Truxton in every shmup video has turned into a meme by itself at this point.

actually JRPGs are only fun if they have good music and other aesthetic qualities
Earthbound is literally a Dragon Quest clone, it only stands out because of music etc., and I love that game but the gameplay is no less generic than something bland like Breath of Fire
like if you talk to anyoen about their favorite JRPGs and why they like them, they will always, always mention the music. the gameplay doesn't really stand out in particular.

well the first person dungeon crawlers with the grid-based dungeons are actually fun just for the gameplay, like Wizardry and SMT, but yeah the overhead DQ/FF clones are generally mainly good because of the aesthetics, even when they have some cool gameplay elements they can't stand on their gameplay alone

The C64 had a huge ratio of absolutely awful games with outstanding soundtracks.

And indeed did I record some of those to tape for my walkman. Just like that tune I posted. The game is absolute rubbish (the other ports were also crap) but the music of the game was outstanding.
