Stuff that you randomly stumbled upon while playing a retro game in the pre-internet days.

Pic related, I thought I was the smartest motherfucker around when I discovered you could powerbomb that glass tube in Super Metroid

>> No.456616

Don't you pretty much *have* to do that to beat the game? Since the upper entry to Maridia only takes you as far as the wrong side of one of those one-way super missile gates?

hm. are you talking about the long vertical shaft that ushers you to the lower portion? if not, which gates are you talking about?

Maridia is connected to the wrecked ship, but I think it's a one way route with crumble blocks.
However, there's a backdoor to the Power Bomb branch of Brinstar which is sealed off with a green gate, you should be able to glitch around that one.

This is the exit I was thinking of. As long as you don't fuck up in upper Maridia then it should be feasible to get out this way, in which case you could just go up the red brinstar shaft and run through the wrecked ship again.

I'm just failing to remember exactly how accessible that exit is from the maridia grapple beam room below and to the right of it.

That if you left one enemy alive on a screen in the overworld of zelda 1 nes, the others wouldnt respawn.

I picked the game back up recently, and was so confused why there were so many enemies than I remember. Then, instinctively, I just left one and walked to the next screen. It wasn't until the 3 dungeon where I backtrack across the center before I realized what I was doing and why.

I haven't played the game in almost 20 years.

OP here. I'm not as big of an expert as a speed runner would be, but I've never beaten the game without doing it.

It just felt like a huge accomplishment when I was 8 years old wandering around the map for a week with no idea what to do, and I randomly set off a powerbomb here and it caused the tube to shatter, I thought it was a pretty big deal at the time (pre internet days, I was the first of my friends to play through the game)

i'm currently playing FFIX for the first time and i simply can't fathom how you could beat a boss that strong with a level one character. although interestingly enough this does seem like the one game you'd be able to do a level one run in because your main character can flee from fights and the bosses don't give ANY XP! i was pretty pissed at first but then i realized you don't really need to grind whatsoever unless you want to master all the abilities. the levels don't matter much, but my initial point still stands.

Would you believe 9 is my favorite? I always get crap for it but...In my opinion at least, it is one of my all time examples of games as art, up there with deus ex, and (lists a huge number of games) its just that from beginning to end it is a play. No game ahs ever left me feeling so satisfied at the end. Truthfully, if any game deserves a series of movies (4: one for each disk) it is final fantasy 9. Too ba dthey would hire Uwie Bowl to make it though.

>> No.457062

>>457043
i'm (i think) about half way through disk two, and while i wouldn't say it's my favorite, i'm loving almost every minute of this game. it's well done, the story is lighter than the previous two while still being serious enough, but broken up with humor to keep things from being too depressing. i don't find myself minding too much being passed around from party to party as the controlling host, and i like how the ability system works in this one, reminds me a lot of tactics, which i love with a passion. all in all, fantastic game, so i have no trouble seeing that it could be someone's favorite.

my personal favorite is IV, and i know that one gets a lot of bashing too for how uncustomizable it is. in the ds version on playthrough 2 and 3 of every game it's pretty good though, you can do some fun customizing stuff with the ability crystals or whatever they are called.

The thing I hate the most about it, though is synthing items late in the game with low level items you can't purchase anymore. So basically, stocking up on low level items and always have 5-10 of every equipment.

The Incredible Hulk was a beat-em up game from Probe Entertainment (Acclaim) for the SNES and Mega Drive.

It was essentially a straight forward side scrolling action beat em up game but there were a myriad of special moves that the Hulk could perform that were not outlined in the manual or any magazine hint book I owned.

I had to figure out the special moves on my own and it was great! I basically tried a few Mortal Kombat moves that I already knew like forward + forward + punch, etc... and got some great moves like one where the Hulk grabs and enemy, rolls them into a ball and throws them across the screen.

If you press A + B + C together (on the Mega Drive controller) you would be able to make Hulk clap, which would break open crates revealing the delicious gamma pills inside to make you stronger along with adding health.

Mega Man X3, one of the items in Tunnel Rhino's stage.
My brother, a friend, and I were all taking turns playing, trying to get one of the items in the stage. The item was blocked by a boulder suspended from ropes or cords or something. We couldn't figure out how to get the boulder away or removed.

We kept shooting different weapons at it, but they all did nothing. So then, jokingly, I charged-up the Triad Thunder weapon, which, when charged, made X punch the ground to fire the weapon. Reflecting our silly frustrations on X, I fired the charged Triad Thunder, shouting, "I'M SO MAD, I'M GONNA PUNCH THE GROUND!"

And as it turns out, charged Triad Thunder is what you needed to knock the boulder down and out of the way.

We all laughed when that happened.

>Final Fantasy II (US) a.k.a. IV

I don't know if anyone else did this, here's something I did when I was 12:

When Cecil is sent with the spies Palom and Porom to Mt. Ordeals, take a Chocobo to the north mountain behind Ordeals and check every tile. There is one that looks impassable, but (on a chocobo, at least) you can ride right over it and go clockwise around the mountain until you reach the other side.

Monsters from Silveira spawn there. and will give you a FUCK-TON of XP if you kill everyone else but Palom and Porom. The object of the game here is to use the Twin attack. If you die, reload and try again. Once Palom gets Virus, kill Porom, and enjoy power-leveling him until he gets Meteo, the ultimate spell in the game. Then rinse/repeat for Cecil if you so desire, but there was no Dark Wave on the US version, so I kept Palom with me as an insurance policy.

The cool thing about this is that power-leveling Palom enables Rydia to return with every black spell when you get her back in the underworld (including Meteo), making the rest of the game a cakewalk. I haven't tested this on the Japanese version, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Also, greetings from /b/.

I love IX too, it feel more like a return to a more general fantasy style that the "modern" feeling and technology inspired VII and VIII. That may be why so many hated it, VIII is a natural evolution from its predecessor in that even though they're different worlds, you feel that the culture has grown and developed and cars, flying machines and weapons are properly futuristic.

IX in that sense would be a giant step backwards into a more steampunk medieval setting that I imagine put a lot of people off.

I think if you play the game for more than a few minutes you get a depth and story that's fucking miles above the other games. The ending was the first time I felt moved to tears by the characters.

Mario RPG niggas
>The person behind the house in Mushroom Kingdom who you never see (supposedly Luigi)
>All those invisible treasure chests
>Getting to Grate Guy's Casino
>Jumping on the spinning girl's head
>Toadstool's ???
I don't know how they placed that stuff in such apparently impossible to find ways, and somehow led you into noticing half of it anyway

Is Yoshi enjoying some underwater drain suction?

It took me ages to figure out how to escape Ridley's lair. The exit is just offscreen; you don't blow up a wall or try to find a hole in it with the X-Ray Visor, you just walk right the fuck behind it. That kind of pissed me off. The power bomb part made sense. Also
>Find room full of spikes you're supposed to use the grapple beam to traverse
>Use up all my health jumping on spikes and frozen enemies to get to the end
>Ready for my item to grant me an easy escape from this bitch-ass chamber of darkness
>X-Ray Visor

no, you can actually hit the piranha plant with an egg before it gets Xbawks Huge magic'd up, which lets you skip the boss fight altogether.
