When I was a kid the storymode for The Second Attack was the greatest thing ever. As an adult it’s too story heavy and involves too much backtracking for my tastes, but my memories of the game as a kid will always make it a game I think about fondly.

Having a plot where the game is basically a scifi JRPG-ish fanfic of the bible but with power rangers instead of angels still seems pretty fun to me. That’s the kind of zany fun I like in Bomberman. And I still love how you start the game busting out of a prison with classic + shape bombs, yet by the end you’re kicking and throwing exploding black holes at God, and it somehow feels like a very natural progression.

I think it has the best multiplayer of the series too. At the very least, the best 4 player multiplayer. No other Bomberman I’ve played has come close to being as insane as this one.

Is Super Bomberman R any good? I was hesitant to buy it since it looked like a rehash of the same kind of thing that the 90s Bomberman games (Super Bomberman series, '93 and '94, etc) were.

The franchise has been gutted since Hudson was assimilated into Konami. Don't bother with any of the newer games.

The classic Game Boy titles were the highlight of the series. Super Bomberman and the PC Engine titles were all notable, but they're basically one rehash after the other. You can just pick one and forget the rest.

The GB titles make some pretty drastic changes to the established formula. Atomic Punk / Bomber Boy lets you finish levels in any order, and you can purchase any combination of power-ups between worlds. Pocket Bomberman is interpreted as a side-scrolling platformer similar to Mario. Bomberman Quest is a Bomberman-themed Zelda clone. Bomberman Max is Bomberman with a Pokemon gimmick.

Most of the GB titles also include a secondary play mode, like classic versus matches against CPU opponents, or mini-games similar to something you would see in a mobile app.
