What is the best pre-90's arcade platformer?

Daimakaimura series if you consider these platformers

Meant to say Makaimura and its sequel, sorry.

This. The only competetion is Stryder

Runners up: Splatterhouse, Contra,

Splatterhouse and Contra are different genres to me: beat'em up and run an gun, respectively. Not much platforming on those.
Strider is pretty melee combat heavy but I can see it.
Too bad platformers were strangely unpopular in the arcades, we could have had very cool games.

Vs Super Mario Bros, easily. Makaimura and Splatterhouse are both great, but not platformers.

What genre would Makaimura be in, then? Sure, it has elements of shooting but it's mostly a platformer, right? Wouldn't you call Mega Man a platformer, too?

Rastan

The line is pretty blurry considering most games have elements of both but the challenge in Makaimura comes primarily from defeating enemies while in SMB it's primarily navigating levels. Games like Mega Man or Castlevania are even harder to objectively categorize although it's probably safer to call them platformers since that category is broader
