>Carmageddon with Glide is where it's at.
I don't get why many think it's the best way to experience C1. Glide mode was painstakingly added to the original game as "alpha" patches around the expansion pack release even though C1 wasn't made to be run in that mode (many original textures were not power of two, can't filter textures/sprites with transparency, gradients not supported, lacking graphics engine features, distorded skies, UI bugs).

I understand some people just prefer filtered textures and a high resolution, however like many games from that era C1 lacks colors (or a better palette) to take advantage from filtering. The lack of overal geometry complexity makes it look quite bland in higher resolutions. And finally Glide has that weird habit of washing textures out. pic related

tl;dr: Glide lessens the gritty aspect of the original game.

I disagree, the game is bad. but not because of the graphics or the sound.
The cars just control like shit, it's like you're driving on ice with greased up tires, at no point do you feel like you're in control of the car.
So you're trying to race right, but then you get pushed off the track and just turning around becomes a huge chore, because of how horribly the car reacts.

It's a damn shame, the cars look nice and the maps look interesting enough to want to explore.
but you're just stuck in that terrible car that wont do you what you want it to do.

Some people on the steam forums are defending it, saying that that's how the original controlled.
And while that might be the case it doesn't mean that it was a good idea to copy that part of the game.

I really wanted to like the new Carmageddon, but its just no fun to play.
It's like Capcom releasing a new street fighter and it has all these great characters and sweet backgrounds.. and then it controls like a Famicom pirate.

Carma 1 by comparison to C2 is underrated as it has a limited damage system, no recovery tilt, no user operable pups, simpler maps and general interactivity, as well as being harder to mod. But it has the best aesthetic and setting, the detailed and gory deaths of the 2D peds combined with satisfyingly juicy sounds, a crunchier impact feeling during opponent battles, no annoying missions and no wasteage to immediately end the game whenever it feels like it. Also, the Suppressor if defeated will be the sweetest revenge against those police APCs that harassed you throughout the game.

C2 on the other hand is great for modding, the 3D peds are more manipulative and the damage system is fantastic (better than nu-Carma). User operable pups add a new dimension and the environments have more going on in them. But on the downside it is notably less polished, buggy, prone to crashes, wasteage was a frustrating addition and the missions annoying and out of place. SCi rushed Stainless so the lack of quality control and missing content (like the cops) is apparent, which explains the lack of an expansion pack like the first game had.

TDR 2000 IMO is best taken as the spinoff it is and not as a true Carma 3, visually it's easily the nicest looking Carma yet and it has a great atmosphere. The cops are back, along with the Suppressor, even the Eagle's design from the first game and is set in a gritty future, so in essence it's closer to a sequel to C1 than C2 was with its more contemporary setting. The only real downsides IMO being the less advanced damage system, peds being too durable, hardly any time for killing peds, simplified driving physics, less memorable opponents, too many missions (at least here they make more sense), and obviously the fact it wasn't made by Stainless. SCi outsourced Carma 3 to Torus during a downtime Stainless requested to recharge their batteries for a C3. Needless to say SCi wasn't successful with rebooting the series.

Nu-Carma could've been the next best thing to C1 and C2, with the best of both worlds, with none of the bad. But upon finishing the game and going back to it since it really shows its design flaws. Damage calculation is just a mess and lopsided in favor of the opponent vs. the player, especially when it comes to ramming. Too much emphasis on using pups to cheaply kill opponents as ramming does next to nothing now unless you are driving one of the OP vehicles. The modding isn't what it was suppose to be and is poorly implemented and not supported at this rate. Console releases failed to generate interest but somewhat downgraded the game's fidelity (at least we weren't stuck with a 30 FPS cap). Stainless are also really bad at feedback and haven't done much since (Crashers doesn't count). Overall I'm still happy we got a new Carma, but it's unfortunate that it's not as good as it could've been.

You must run the game with a modded CARM95.EXE. Easiest way is to download the MeldPack and apply the hires CARM95 execs.
MeldPack here http://rr2000.toshiba-3.com/carmageddon-1
"Carma95 in higher resolutions" here http://rr2000.toshiba-3.com/pc-files#c1

If you own C1 on Steam or GOG you can also apply the 95RPP patch thing and select the hires execs during install.

Draw distance is just increased YON in OPTIONS.TXT, default is 25 or 35, you can increase it to 75 or 100 etc higher might make the game crash when opponents need to respawn. If OPTIONS.TXT is encrypted you must type IWANTTOFIDDLE (or IZQNTTOFIDDLE on azerty kb) at the game menu (the one with the race preview pic).

If the sky is stretched then I guess you're playing the game in Glide mode within DOSBox. If you want your game to look like the video you linked to, then you must play the windows95 version (carm95). You can do that either by using the MeldPack or applying the 95RPP on your Steam Max Pack (http://qtz.toshiba-3.com/uMaxPack95RPP.zip).).

I didn't notice C2S has the ped distance hack enabled in his video, that means he uses the executables from http://rr2000.toshiba-3.com/pc-files#c1 (search for "Carma95 in higher resolutions")

For the opponents being simplified in the distance, make sure that they are set to appear as far as possible in the in-game settings (you can max out all the settings, just dobule-check for your YON afterward as it might be reset).
It's also possible that C2S manually set that 'simple model' to appear much further in each opponent text file. Not sure if that actually works though.

I hope there are more anons involved than (You)s... In case it wasn't obvious, the pack I quickly put together yesterday only tries to reproduce the setup from the video posted here >>4567650
Carmageddon being a very crash-friendly program, adding unfinished hacks to it will result in more crashes. I guess I should have pointed that out. Still I'm surprised some of you guys get crashes after 5min. It works rather nicely here. Menus, maps and cockpits being technically more annoying to patch for hires, we didn't bother.
Anyway that's the setup used by C2S in his video, though he doesn't seem to run the game with the Splat Pack content merged into the main game.

Something's in the works to greatly improve the game on modern systems but it won't be out before a long time. In the meantime, either you can enjoy hacks for what they are (and can waste some more time to tweak stuff to reduce them), or then simply play the Steam/GOG releases. At the moment, there's no playing a crash-free widescreen Carmageddon 1 (nor 2), unless it is as stretched Glide mode.

You have to install C1+CARM95 somehow. Add the ddraw wrapper to the mix. Then do the steps to install the HD test hacks again (execs into the root, duplicate 64x48x8 into 1280x720x8 and 1920x1080x8, then drop the content of the archive in their respective folders).

Maybe a C1-only +CARM95 pack exists on the net. The original C1 disk offers to install the CARM95 version too (not the Max Pack disks however). I guess taking the root files (not the DATA folder) from the real MeldPack and putting them in the CARMA root of the GOG/Steam release should do the trick too (then add HD tests). I didn't test.

Too bad the HD test feature from the 95RPP doesn't seem to work (it doesn't here) as it would have been an easy way to get C1-only + HD test (minus the ped distance hack though).

Okay I figured out something the reason for the Carmageddon crashing with the meldpack that you just posted is because of splat pack every time I crash into one of the Splat pack opponents the game will crash so what I did was I went into my steam version of Carmageddon and copied all of the original data and overwritten the meldpack data which basically erases the Splat pack opponents and just keeps the original Carma 1 opponents and the game runs stable is not crashing anymore. Been playing in high-res mode in 1280 x 720 with the new HUD and ped draw distance like C2S version for the past 20 mins and so far no crash. So yep all set for good thanks for your help

One thing that is strange which causes the game to crash again is that if you type I want to fiddle and then you open the options in the data folder and change the Yon Factor when you open the game it'll crashing say can't find resolution did you mod the Yon Factor already when making the meldpack?

>YonFactor
I guess this is a typo but just in case pay attention that the YonFactor doesn't really have to be higher than 1.0, and that the value to change for the draw distance is the Yon (a few lines below in OPTIONS.TXT).
Also no, neither the normal MeldPack nor the modified MeldPack uploaded earlier have their YonFactor or Yon modified beyond game defaults.
When the game shouts about something like "car resolution dependant file not found", it might also mean that the game is confused because it finds both encrypted and decrypted files within its data. May happen when files get mixed from an install into another as we do here.

>>4573941
>Splat Pack cars are a source of crashes
Indeed. In my experience, either the game will crash straight away when I ram into such opponent or it won't crash at all. However this is just a symptom of an issue elsewhere, we suspect it's from within the Carm95 executable but can't pinpoint it.

>>4574065
Define "hud is still fucked up". As explained the HD tests are unfinished stuff from years ago and even shipped without any repositioning of HUD elements at first. Only the 1280x720 resolution has a repositioned HUD for the external camera, and that is because C2S passed me his setup to include in the HD tests archive. (No idea why the 1920 one doesn't work)
C2S' setup is C1 + these very executables + his 1280x720 setup which is now included with the execs.

Also the custom HUD for Eagle in 1280 is working well. if you switch to lets say the tow truck the hud is the old HUD stuck at 640 yes I know C2S may have only made the custom HUD for the Eagle but is there a way to make the custom HUD for all cars? photo example again. this is the carma951280 exe I am driving pitbull and the custom hud is a bit off here. My fault, I forgot that with the HD tests if a car has no HUD repositioning then its own text file shouldn't appear in DATA\1280X720X8\CARS to let the game load the default external HUD (BLKEAGLE.TXT, as seen in pic >>4574263).

Anyway if other people are interested I've uploaded a new pack based on the feedback gathered earlier: based on vanilla C1 and using QTZ' HUDs this time. QTZ made HUD positions for all 'stealable' cars and for both 1280x720 and 1920x1080. Other cars default to the Eagle's HUD.
http://rr2000.toshiba-3.com/R6/CARMA-vr.zip
I hope this will crash less often but keep in mind those HD execs are still crashy, unfinished stuff (non upscaled menus, minimaps nor cockpits).
There's no Splat Pack content this time ofcourse.

If you already have a working install and just want the new external HUDs, empty (or make a backup of) your DATA\1280X720X8\CARS and DATA\1920X1080X8\CARS folders, and grab the text files from DATA\720X8\CARS and DATA\1080X8\CARS respectively (folder names are shorter in this pack).

Which maps? Some don't come with the text chunk that must go in RACES.TXT so you have to either hijack an existing track and make it load the map's txt file, or you write a new chunk. Usually though, maps come with a readme that includes the text chunk to copy-paste into RACES.TXT. The order of levels in that file is the order used ingame.

However, when opening the RACES.txt readme in Carmas main directory to add the track data in similar way to adding opponent number and data via OPPONENTS.txt I have found out that the Sodburbs doesnt come with a Readme.txt with the info to implement into the RACES.txt which could be why the races do exist in the game but don't appear in the Change Race selection menu which leaves me puzzled. Adding in Opponents is a cake walk and I assume adding in race tracks would be as easy.

Oh yeah, Sodburbs is one of those half-assed 'releases'. Just temporarily change one of the existing level chunk in RACES.TXT to make it load SUBURB.TXT. While it's interesting to check out the alpha of what became the snow level of C1, it's not a great track to play IMO.
Other (proper) map releases should be easier to install (like addon cars).

DESU I found OP to be quite patient as well as he didn't stop with the first crashes all around etc. then took the time to figure out what the basics of carma modding are. He's good to go now.

Thread was kinda enlightening to me as it shows how we carmaheads just assume all this stuff should be easy for anyone to figure out, even though there's actually not even a proper go-to guide anywhere. We don't even mention in addon readmes that the game must be decrypted... (I sure don't)
The infographic >>4553217 isn't too bad but I have to update it somehow.

Base model is already quite boring. Trying to get closer to CWR's original design (http://cwr.toshiba-3.com/bdc.htm)) while keeping Stainless' overal skin and yet simplifying the visuals for C1. I don't know why I'm doing this.

does it warp when damaged? also, can you add more opponents to a race instead of just 4? like carma 2 for example?

If you mean the model deforming then yes, I just updated the textures; didn't touch uvw mapping nor the model at all.

And no, sadly can't add more opponents at the moment.
