How did gamers get such a bad reputation? How do you deal with the stigma surrounding video games and video gamers?

This applies even more to retro games. People that play older games tend to be older (surprise, surprise) and are more liekly to rape younger women. Peoleple playing CoDaren't consdieed creepy. But you know what they od find creepy? you're old sweaty ass playing your 2d loli game and giving them the rape face

I think this thread is at home here. Seems like gaming had a much worse reputation back in the 80s and 90s. I mean, even I associate those eras with the slimy acne ridden dork more than the current day (not that today's are any better.)

I can't remember the last time I saw a news report about violent video games. Sure, there's the odd misogyny OP ED from some fringe literally who blogger or something like shitaku, but I mean on the local news, all I ever see is either marketing for whatever new console or a report on research about vidya on the brain, but no sensationalist pieces about violent video games corrupting our youth like there were weekly in the late 80s

>> No.4544730

>>4544704
The reason is probably that video games are much more widespread and also much more varied today. Back in the '80s-'90s, playing video games meant that you spend a lot of time immersing yourself in a world that, to many people, looked like a cartoony, childish waste of time.

Today, it can mean a lot of things. Playing a video game can mean playing Candy Crush on the train, it can mean playing through a cinematic experience developed using the budget of your average Marvel movie, it can mean spending hours yelling at thirteen-year-old kids on Call of Duty or FIFA, it can mean emulating decades-old video games or it can mean any number of other things.

There's also way more people playing games today , so it's harder to call gamers a fringe group. The NES had like 60 million units sold and was the largest console at the time by a pretty large margin (the Master System sold only like ten million). To compare this to the most recent 'finished' generation, the PS3 and X360 each sold 83 million units, and the Wii sold another hundred million.

Before, people played games largely for their game mechanics, because they found playing (as in engaging with game mechanics) fun.
Gaming slowly transformed: particularly from gen 5 on, the arcade influence began to seriously die down and devs figured out the number of people that enjoyed games mechanics was (and is) much smaller that that of other potential markets. So they began to cater to other tastes, such as storyfags and progress system junkies. There are SO many more people like this that games made for the older group have almost disappeared, particularly the most pure ones.

Gaming feels different because it's made by different people. Look at the sales figures of, say, gen 5 and 6 consoles. During PlayStation 1 and 2 the market expanded to a much bigger consumer base, and this isn't correlated to a bigger population. It's entirely new people, and people that enjoy games for entirely different reasons.

Also, want to add: it's ABSOLUTELY no coincidence that FFVII was the way it was.
1. An unprecedented massive marketing campaign that set a precedent for the future of gaming (based on hype).
2. A change in artstyle from the unique Amano to the more generic anime Nomura, while not making it extremely otaku pandered. It was a success with both otaku/weebs and other players for it.
3. Heavily story based game, more cinematic than even the predecessors. Tapping into the storyfag market.
4. It features progress systems. Nothing new, but nuff said.
5. Simplified compared to previous entries: 3 characters in battle that were almost identical outside of the materia attached and the limits.
6. First game in the main series to be released in Europe, and in some non-speaking countries the first, or one of the first major story-based games in their native language (example: Spanish). This meant it had even more of an impact there. Again, no coincidence it was the first to be released there.
This was the kind of game that was the the childhood, or the first / one of the first for a lot of new players. The generational divide can be strongly felt. This was their standard of what a game should be to be good and not the more pure game mechanic based arcades.

I'm also of their age ('93 here) but I got into this thanks to my late father who was very big into arcades. How else do you think I'd be hanging around with 5th gen babies?
And relatively speaking they're much less plebs than usual, I'm not even joking here. Almost everyone from that age group onward is like this, I call them "play generation" (which is what, to this day, consoles in general are called in my country ever since the PS1 came out and too everything by storm, even destroying our robust arcade scene).

In the 80s it was mostly right wingers lashing out at something new they didn't understand. This was unsustainable as inevitably more and more generations were submerged in the culture and saw it was nonsense. The new threat is more insidious as it from people who DO get videogames, so necessarily lie about them to further their own position. The left has had cultural dominance for a good 70 or so years now, but now videogames are the dominant cultural influencer for the yoot. And you can't shoehorn Marxist propaganda into Tetris.
Hence the push for narrative heavy non-game titles like walking simulators and the recent attempts to smear old games as literally morally reprehensible to play. The left understand that videogames are an essential propaganda platform to control new generations, but one that needs its current culture and history destroyed before it will be ready for use. Feminist Frequency regularly cite dubious studios on games making kidz violent as it's the fastest route to appeal to morality and authority to get shit shutdown. Unlike Jack Thompson who tried this before, these fifth columnists actually have people's ears, but the end result is the bizarro world disconnect we currently have between the people and the media worldwide which is totally unsustainable.

I just don't get why people can't accept that not everything is for them, and with the huge library of games and studios out there, there is surely already something for you and a company who makes games for you without you having to demand change in the games that aren't for you.
>this game is too hard!!
Then play a different game.
>I don't want to save a girl, that's sexist
Then play a different game
>the huge fat jugs in this game upset me
Then play a different game.
Granted, yes, i understand the need that some people feel to be moral crusaders and my lack of understanding isnt a true lack of understanding, but I hate the trend toward the idea that every one must feel safe and included at all times and in all media.

Because they're selfish, entitled and stupid. They are genuinely convinced that the world should revolve around them and when they realize their personal taste isn't the measure for everyone else they can't handle it and lose their shit.

It's also what makes it so funny.
