What are some of your favorite games that are flawed as fuck but you love them anyway?

>game more or less is a never-ending fetch-quest
>game has both random encounters and high encounter rate
>game often forces you to use characters you haven't been using who will be dead-weight when you are forced to use them
>game has a terribad translation that manages to have "yes" and "no" mixed up and give very vague idea of what you are supposed to do next at best
>good fucking luck figuring out how to find the earth shaman or how to get the best ending without using guides or walkthroughs
>etc...
Breath of Fire II basically has every single thing that I hate about JRPGs in it yet it manages to be one of my all-time favorites. Do you guys have games that you like despite it having many features/tropes/things you hate?

Maybe not "love" but the first game that came to mind when reading your post was Mega Man X6. It should be pretty obvious why I consider it flawed, but I can still find fun in it.

>> No.4543049

I have so many of these.

>Wonder Boy in Monster Land
>platformer with somewhat wonky controls
>you have a constant timer that takes a full heart of health every time it runs out
>you can continue in the arcade version, on the level you died on exactly as you entered the level
>PC Engine port lets you continue on same level with your current gold total
>no continues on SMS version, you die, you go back to title screen
>gold you get is somewhat randomized, sometimes you have enough gold to get all the good gear, other times you get to the last level and still don't have the best armor/boots
>you can only hit enemies standing directly next to you, a few pixels closer and you take damage
>you can easily miss the hidden sub-quest
>final level is a damned MAZE where one wrong turn can lead to a great deal of time and health lost
>if you miss sub-quest, you won't have bell to give you audio cue when you take right path in the maze
>taking the bell instead of the jewel as reward for completing the sub-quest means the final boss fight will be harder
>if you manage to beat the game, your reward is a screen full of Engrish, then getting dumped right back to the title screen
Still a game I have a lot of fun with, and play through every now and then, but it has problems.

Super Mario Bros2

- non mario mario game
+ different bosses and final boss
+ different characters with different controls
+ heavy focus on non jump n run gameplay mechanic in a mario jump n run game (digging stuff out of the ground)

Usually I dont like nes games, but I like this one because it tries so much more in a fun way.

golden axe fans never mention it and fighting games fans never mention it, still it's my fav golden axe game and one of my fav fighting games.

Attacks/blocks feel good and brutal, characters are designed fantastic and all feel different, the world is fantastic, there are details like death adders shield can break, removing one of his abilities.

I guess it is flawed in some way, because as I said neither of the two groups ever mention it. But it's on my top list of fighting games

Solar Jetman
>nifty for being a physics simulator on the NES
>sharp learning curve, the game expects you to be up to speed by the 3rd level
>most levels are HUGE, and can take a long time to harvest the needed fuel, not to mention all the treasure so you can get the oh so important upgrades and weaponry
>you can spend well over an hour on some levels
>the game is roughly 11-13 levels, depending on if you take any warps or not
>you can't save
>you can't save
>you can't save
>password only motherfuckers
>and the goddamn password doesn't save anything beyond what level you are on, and which of the three jetpods you have
>so you'll start deep in the game without all the equipment you've located and bought
>this can make it impossible, or virtually impossible to continue onwards
>the level before the last level is one of the largest in the game, with TWO maze sections, and most of the fuel you need to haul back to the mothership is on the other side of the maze sections
>even if you get past all this crap, the game has one final dickpunch for you
>you now pilot the legendary Golden Jetpod, but the game doesn't tell you that this legendary ship is actually weaker than your starting jetpod
>you hit a wall in the Golden Jetpod, instant death
>you only get one chance at the last level, you lose the Golden Jetpod, it's instant game over
>even the starting jetpod could bounce off of walls without shields all day, but not the Golden Jetpod
>the controls are also different just for this final level, no more physics sim, now it's like Gradius
>pressing up at the start of this final level to raise your shields will likely make you run into a wall
>the final level is just a small area to fly through, you don't even need to shoot at the final boss to win anways
>ending movie is pretty much nothing, no explanation as to anything
I enjoy the gameplay, but the game is massively flawed.

Basicly you are right. I guess its because of how the attack animations look and the character designs are more boxy and less cloudy. The characters look more solid in golden axe the duel than in samurai showdown. In samurai showdown characters have more floaty clothing if I remember right and whacky haircuts. The levels are poorly designed, the race balance is awful, the AI is shit even by contemporary standards, and it's buggy to boot, but this game has a soft spot in my heart. I'm not even really sure why, but the concept of Yavaun and the history of the 4 interacting species is so goddamn cool. Might and Magic 2
>early RPG, just barely has color graphics
>the entire stat/class system is an expy of DnD
>holy fucking shit this game is unbalanced like a motherfucker
>9 levels of spells for both types of magic, tons of spells
>you will use roughly 10-12 of those the entire game
>by the end of the game you just use movement spells and Disintegrate
>magic is broken as fuck, hit and miss as can be, casting anything other than movement, healing, or Disintegrate outside of specific situations is a waste of your magic points
>ultra-random battles, you can be walking in a generally safe zone and encounter enemies you couldn't hurt even if you were 10 levels higher
>in the PC versions, battles can have well over a thousand enemies, and they can call for backup
>some classes are just crappier than others, no point in using them unless bored
>getting started to the point where you can tackle the first quest can take tons of grinding
>plot is paper thin, only to throw some major details at you near the end
>so much utter bullshit throughout the game
All that being said, one of my favorite RPGs just because of how broken it is. You can push your stats to the maximum allowed by the system, level for ages, push your HP to the point where the game can't even display it all properly anymore, get +63 level gear, and you will still encounter enemy groups that can wipe you. I still haven't beaten the optional 64 Devil Kings fight before the final boss. I know the other M&M games get a lot of love, but MM2 will always be my favorite for being so completely unfair and broken.

I guess Illusion of Gaia is my pick. It is a pretty basic action rpg but I think it has a absurdity to it that I love. The script and plot are already absurd nonsense and made even weirder by a mediocre 90's localization, the combat is relatively simple (but offers a interesting leveling system), and the dungeons are fun but nothing that new but it uses so many cool ideas and such for places to explore. Exploring the Hanging Gardens or The Great Wall of China as dungeons just has a charm to it. It's not criminally underrated fortunately and I think it's reputation is pretty fair, a good game worth playing but nothing you absolutely need in your snes collection or to emulate as soon as possible.

>>4542954
Honestly I would put BoF as a whole maybe. I feel like the series began as Capcom wanting to try to get in on the rpg craze that was happening in Japan then and slowly it molded into something that, while never quite fully competent, was something truly original and not just meant to be another console rpg. Each game from BoFII onward tried to incorporate a lot of interesting concepts rarely seen in other Japanese console rpgs (II with the town system, III with dragon genes and masters, IV with it's take on its world and art as well as the row system, and V with basically everything). It never always worked out and the games never truly reach absolute greatness but fuck, even as someone whose picky as fuck about Japanese console rpgs they really just have something unique about them.
>>4544364
I've always been interested in playing this as it sounds like a really cool game but I'm always scared I'll just disappoint myself. more then anything else. Still, Bowie alone would justify me checking out a game.

It's a very old and shitty rogue-like, the music is repetitive, the graphics are so raw and simple some creatures are just shapes and the entire ost is composed of 5 or 6 looping tunes.
