Edgar signing on here. For my money it has got to be Sephiroth. Yours truly knows for a fact what it feels like when you lose something precious to an evil menace. Hell I know for a fact that no other game player has ever fallen for a damsel like Aeris the flower girl of the slums turned CETRA GODDESS (wooooweeezowwwy do i love my mystical girlfriend) as hard as I did when I first ventured into Gaia as a young boy. It hardened me. Toughened me up to go through what Cloud went through. When my arch nemesis Sephiroth took the plunge that took my girl's life I learned first hand about loss. I LOVED Aeris. LOVED. It was no longer about saving the planet. Well that too but for me it was all about revenge from that point. I became a SOLIDER for real both in game and irl. I changed my personality to become more like a spurned lover (and remember I was around 8 when I first played this game so it took a lot of intellect to grasp these adult emotions) at school and in front of dad. Dad used to ask me what was wrong. "I lost my girl," is what I would say to him. Cryptic. Smooth. It wasn't until I finished the game that I returned to normal. Sephiroth had this impact on me. He is the greatest video game villain.

People like you who bought and praised these cinematic story-based games and/or progress system fests and contributed to the death of a medium that had truly demanding and interesting game mechanics, to be replaced with the modern gaming landscape.

>> No.4542667

If a video game has a psychological impact on you or is capable of immersing you in a different world because its developers took the time to develop it then that is a mechanic that is having a positive impact on the dynamic between player and game. Trust me, I am leagues ahead of you in intelligence and I have all day to bicker but quite frankenly I have already one the argument so get lost small fry. I hear McDonalds is having a special on Kids Meals for snot nosed rubberneckers who never got picked on the kickball courts. You are pathetic. Innocent trash from a despicable genome. I am Edgar. I know a thing or two about interesting game mechanics. Get lost. You have 5 seconds.

Quick, give a list of good arcade-style games from 2017 outside of Nex Machina. I'll wait, anon.
>>4542670
Progress systems undermine games. They're mostly there so people can beat them without actually engaging into the game (just waste enough time). They also make the experience unbalanced since the challenge isn't made entirely for your skills, but also your avatar's. And also to get people who don't like games to play them, because they may get addicted to them even if they don't even like the actual mechanics. They are bad in almost every way. Absolutely not "meming" here.
>>4542667
This is not a game mechanic. A game mechanic is how the player interacts with a game and its rules. How chess pieces feel to the touch, how pretty they look is not a game mechanic, even if it's something in reality that's "technically" interacting with you.

The best fun factor is that most of what people call progression fests can be beaten by knowing, memorizing patterns and plan your resources with sometimes a well placed grind using the game mechanics in your favor... You know skill in game is not only reflex, speed and timing and some RPGs don't even exclude them with responsive menus for wait tricks and exploits.

And if you truly want to test all of your gaming skills stay the fucking away from single player games and try your hand at Starcraft/SF.

I like Krelian, Delita, Leonar and Vayne (well over 12 years for me is retro fuck the board rules) type of villians.

Either them or a simple Maou archetype like Dragon Quests, creating text dumps for justifying simple objectives is something i disliked a lot on some FFs.

On Seph i prefer my headcanon over ultimania and compilations, game mechanics and a oddity on a cutscene make me believe it was Jenova the entire time.

How Seph never noticed Cloud before almost losing half o his body? Specially after trashing Zack and Tittisa? Could it be he was struggling to see who would be in command when it came in contact with Jenova?

Why the ghost of Seph you chase the whole game throws you Destruct a fundamental Materia to win the Safer Sephiroth fight?

I'm the guy you're quoting and yes, whenever I play (not so much lately but whatever) those games I actively don't engage in any grinding bullshit and make progress the way you mentioned. Figuring out how to beat a part with the stuff I have at the moment.
I still believe they would be nicer games without the progress systems, or at least the ability to grind and permanently save said grind, they could have a tighter strategic element then. But, of course, they have to be there to tap into the ENORMOUS progress system junkie market (which is dominating gaming right now btw)
I like turn based strategy, not only in video games so I'm not just an arcade fag. I just enjoy genuine game mechanics.

It all depends on the game, on games like HoMM3 (fucking good game) and Famicon Wars franchise a progression system would actually ruin the experience as it is all about positioning, terrain (resource gathering on some games) and dealing with losses as they are on a realistacally and fun standpoint interesting to exist instead of a one man army actually getting more powerful and profiting from battles like FE and their main go to strat on the harder games" picking the character with high growth and mobility and moping the ground with enemy armies" ignoring many mechanics from the game.

But progression system on games like Disgaea, Dragon Quest or SMT can not only be used to create funny scenarios but also be introduce you more interesting use of mechanics that you would usually not use on a normal game as they would be too complex to force on a casual gamer.

This no grind style of turn based gameplay never died, it's just more obscure there is a lot of Famicom Wars, Sting games, Might and Magics and IRC there are TBSs being released on current gen.

Sephiroth was the worst for all of the reasons you said but also had layers of intrigue. one of my favorite scenes in Final Fantasy Seven was when he was in the library at Bethlehem mansion and discovered who he really was. Loki / Lucifer. Coolest final boss ever. In those days, without internet and so, less information about the games, I was amazed to fight Loki after completing the second loop of Ghouls'n Ghosts.

The princess kept talking about defeating the "Prince of Darkness", but you don't know what she's talking about because Loki doesn't appear in the game until you have to battle him (unlike Strider, where Meio, the final boss appears at the start of the game).

It was so satisfactory defeating him (after a harder second loop of the game) that I annoyed my parents talking about it that afternoon.

Btw, Loki is so awesome that was parodied in the final boss of Cuphead.

My nostalgia for good Shining Force games from Takahashi brothers and their Valkyrie Profile composer kinda magnets me to the sequel.

It's so damn high that i can't even see too many faults on the game.

I like the puzzles more than the combat and the sprite work is better than anything i saw on SNES, it's simply amazing.

I just wished for a easy revive spell, there was no need to keep the Dragon Quest style of revivals as deaths are more result of brainfarts and you spacing out than a challenging enemy.
