I played through the fan translation of 2 a few months back, thoroughly enjoyable game. Wish sega would do some sort of rerelease of this and other big saturn games, it's a real shame they don't seem to give a shit about anything on the saturn that isn't nights.

Did you get it to work with Yabause by any chance? I get the black screen when it loads a battle with too many troopers.

I don't. They spend too much time playing pentatonic scales instead of doing interesting things. Speed Metal can be cool, but not if it's generally boring.

Dragon Force is a Sega Saturn strategy / RPG published by Working Designs. You take on the role of one of 8 (?) rulers who must beat all the other warring kingdoms on a continent because of reasons. There is a bit of simple resource management, good storylines, some good twists, nice anime cutscenes etc. When your general meets another general on the map, a quasi-realtime battle ensues with hundreds of sprite soldiers running at each other on a mode 7 battlefield, you can control their formation (attack, defence etc) and your general can use special attacks.

No single element of the game is particularly deep but they all work together very, very well, the storyline is great and the game is full of great characters with a lot of personality. Oh, and the music is good. It may be my favourite Saturn game.

a dull clone that lacks the charm of the saturn title

I hear DF2 is better. Are they connected or can I just play the second?

>> No.4543495

not him but DF2 isn't better. Personally I prefer the first one for its great OST, vibrant colors and the fact that the camera is further away from your faction on the world map, so you always see what's happening between other factions and that's part of the fun. 2 is good and you should play it too, but 1 is the real classic and should be played first

Most definitely. Randomly picked up the first from the back of an Electronics Boutique because Saturn games were shoved to the back because no one wanted them, but for a discounted price of $25 I gave it a chance and I found the game extremely engrossing. While the game is pretty simple, it still melts away many hours, like Civilization, Geometry Wars 2, Culdcept, etc. where it would be day and the next thing you notice is that it is night, or vice versa. Saturn games are pretty hated on this board and Dragon Force is typically one of the games exemplifying one of the better titles the system has, and while it may not compare to a lot of other games in terms of depth, narrrative, or mechanics, I find it very fun.

Mednafen-Saturn. It's included in Retroarch. Yabause is obsolete. Even SSF is obsolete.

Best ruler / general?

Junon had the best music, the best special attack and the best generals IMO. Scar was a particular favourite

Junon is cool and her generals are indeed the best but i prefer Leon's theme

It is the same game. A smoothing filter was applied to the sprites (or it seems like that's how systems do by default since 3D acceleration) but they did redraw the splash screen images and character portraits it a more clean style also a lot more voice has been added all around.

>>4545062
I favored the Izumo clan. They start off in the most defensible position on the map. They also have more of their main generals with the best army clearing special attacks as there are no gaps to escape the wave attacks. Samurai are top tier just underneath dragons.

Junon was always the obvious choice when I was younger. Later I liked playing Gongos or Teiris.

Sorry, I thought you meant favorite, if it's just best one I think it has to be Junon, great defensive resources, strong troops and generals, close to a lot of important castles with important items.
