Are the Sonic Jam ports to the Saturn the definitive way to play the original Sonic trilogy?

The definitive way is to play the original carts on the original hardware, but Sonic Jam has the time trail mode, and because of that, it's the only way I play Sonic games anymore.
But yeah as far as compilations go, Jam is the best one.

Sonic 1? Sure, at least if/until the Taxman port comes to a real system.

Sonic 2? No, there are slowdowns.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles? Nope, the S3 Complete romhack is retardedly good, and probably not even taxman would be able to top it.

But it is an excellent port of the games, so regardless if it's the definite way, it's still pretty great.

Don't, input lag out the ass. As for Sonic Jam, the original carts still grant you higher quality audio and less occasional slowdowns, but lesser features of course, and you gotta own the stuff.

>higher quality audio
I know Jam has some audio shenanigans, like not being able to speed up the music in real time when you get the speedshoes, due to CD streaming, but I thought the actual quality of the audio is the same.

I didn't play much the Sonic 3D Classic, but I remember it had imperfect music emulation (Which happened to the Shinobi III 3D too).
They are all right and have some nice features, but the games also loses some appeal on a small screen.

>> No.4538047

>>4537995
I don't think those are emulated, IIRC they were rebuilt from the ground up for the 3DS.

It was such a difficult task its why Nintendo didn't pursue it beyond the few 3D classics they did early on. When they were first showed off Nintendo had other games like Mario World and Mega Man 2 running. But it was such a costly process they didn't decided it wasn't worth the investment.

Its a shame they didn't at least do Mario 3 since it would lend itself well to the whole "on stage" atmosphere.

if you're looking for an excuse to buy a Saturn and Sonic Jam then yeah sure, I'd be lying to you though. You can play these games on anything, and I mean anything

if you need to ask people on whether or not you want to pull the trigger it's probably a stupid idea. Just emulate it.

No, music I believe was sampled at 22KHz (can't remember how many bps), same goes for the sounds, which are very jarring and earrapey, most of them are also shorter.

Genesis doesn't give a fuck and constantly outputs FM synth at over 50 whatever KHz so the only crystal clearness of its sound is given by lack of filters and good amps.

The only really cool thing about Sonic Jam is that a number of sound effects seem to come from source preproduction assets, meaning their original intended noise before being converted into FM synth to be played by the console, and I am certainly the kind of Sonic fan who goes nuts about what other stuff lie(d)s inside Sega's archives.

I wasted too much time reading those, or the artwork, or rewatching over and over Sonic the Movie trailer or Man of the Year(2nd part never), or listening to the soundtracks. Back then all of these were pretty neat.
About that Movie Theatre, that's when I learned how weird japan was with all those crazy commercials.

no, Sonic Jam is an awful port. The music quality is crap, the tracks keep restarting if you take powerups, and many sound effects are off as well. It has time trial and sonic 1 spindash and that's about the only thing going for it.

The definitive way to play Sonic nowadays is to have a cellphone in one had with Facebook/Twitter/Instagram active, a dragon dildo up you anus, and playing the game on an emulator on your MacBook.
