I keep hearing these two games hailed as the best shmups on the Turbografx/PC- Engine. But I do not see the appeal.

Particularly, people gush about the hard rock soundtrack, but they ignore the fact you can barely hear the music over the overly loud ingame soundeffects (the blaster/laser sound effects drown out the music in Gates, and collecting the gems drowns it out in Lords). What the hell were they thinking?

So what about these games make them a must play? Because it certainly is not the effectively non- existent soundtracks.

yeah I don't know what you're blabbing about, but I've never found the sound effects to overpower the redbook audio. but then I've got an actual stereo system. sorry you don't.

The tg16 has a lot of shmups but there's not really that many I'm all that crazy about desu. Aside from ports, I like Air Zonk, Violent Soldier, and that cute em up where you play as the dragon.

Never played the arcade version of un squadron to be honest. I like the console version because of the progression, and the ability to select different planes and weapons depending on the type of mission.

both games push the pc engine to the limit graphically. they look quite nice on the weakest 16-bit console

Gate of Thunder is a great Thunder Force III clone, and Lords of Thunder has a pretty unique playstyle

someone named Electrohaze has re-leveled the sound on both games, I would check those copies out
