I see lots of threads asking about the best games for snes, or the best games for genesis, but sometimes those games are the same. I don't want to start a console war, but can i get some opinions on preferences between games on both systems? I'm not talking about things like Aladdin which are two completely different games, but games that are essentially the same on both systems with slight variations.

Toy Story genesis has one extra remote control car level.

>> No.4535161

As a general rule

Genesis
-Will be higher resolution
-Will have more animation / levels because it's easier to compress data for that format
-Any pseudo-3D effect that can't be done in mode 7 background scaling/rotation will be better on Genesis (e.g. the Doom style levels in Toy Story)
-Less slowdown

SNES
-Will be more colorful
-The transparency effects will tend to be better
-Music / sound effects are more likely to be competent, with exceptions
-Pseudo-3D effects will be better if they can be achieved with Mode 7

The general evidence showed games looking better on the SNES but having extra content on the Genesis. Plenty of exceptions though

I don't think you should worry about "starting a console war", since the original never really ended

Depends on the game in question desu I wouldn't say it's a %100 guarantee the sound will always be better on one system or the other.

The FM Synthesis of the Genesis has very high potential but it's harder to master, so there was a higher chance of a game sounding like farts due to incompetent composers / sound programmers. Also, sound effects are more hi-fi on the SNES.
Still, we're only talking in general https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wodCloEJdgs

Any game that looks better on the Genesis or has extra content on the SNES?

I unironically like this game's music. Half of it is nostalgia, but I actually dig the compositions, and how it's basically just 2 audio channels, an organ and a bass, and somehow gets the job done, although it sounds a bit eerie, but I like it because of that, it has this bizarre class B quality to it, it's cheap but it's good.
It's also funny how that's the only 2 songs on the entire game, not counting title, ending and map music.

>> No.4535521

>>4535516
This is one of the most severe cases of nostalgia blinding I've ever seen lol At least you're honest.

Yeah, I also enjoy the game, somewhat. I play it from time to time. I've found there's a hidden mechanic to jump higher (basically press jump again after a jump the moment you touch floor and it makes a sort of bounce jump, helpful in many parts of the game). It's a below average platformer though, I'm aware of that.
Music is really cheap but I dig the actual compositions. The one you posted has this sort of post-punk/goth rock vibe to it, and the other, more cheerful one has some interesting parts with really quirky, baroque-sounding songwriting, reminds me a bit of stuff like early Moog synth music, like Perrey or Walter Carlos. Except in really crappy quality and just 2 audio channels.

Console Wars has given me answers to the same questions as you OP, because /vr/ seems too scared to answer which ones are honestly better or worse or they never did the research

When did you disagree? My only disagreement is with Aladdin because the SNES game is obviously superior even despite the graphics of the Genesis

You may prefer the SNES version, but it is not superior.

It's not even the whole graphics, just the digital animation techniques on the sprites.
Actual graphic assets and overall art direction is better on the Capcom game I think. And yeah, gameplay and level layout is obviously superior on Capcom's, no brainer.

I prefer good hit boxes to good graphics, sorry Virgin fanboy.

Also what is with the retarded hypocrisy of /vr/?

>Aladdin on Genesis has bigger sprites
>Platforming is much harder and the hit boxes are terrible
>"GOTYAY!"

>Aladdin on SNES has smaller sprites
>Solid platforming and things hit you where it makes sense
>"booo dis game sucks"

But then /vr/ hates Mega Man 7 for its huge sprites

Makes no sense.

Y'see, this is why people treat weeaboos like the cockroaches they are. Just because something was made in Japan does not make it inherently better.

Sorry, everyone knows western devs were notorious for their graphics over gameplay mentality with few exceptions.

What did Japan do when they had access to SEGA CD technology? They made badass shmups

What did America do when they had access to SEGA CD technology? They made FMV games

Actually, Capcom's aladdin doesn't let you land, there's a ledge grap mechanic similar to Prince of Persia (a western game).
Stop trying to defend the Virgin game by using the weeb boogeyman.

Western games were usually better on genesis, as they were developed for genesis

in the 16-bit era, whichever platform was the lead system in development had the better version. later ports on rival systems were always worse

You conveniently didn't paste the next part of my post where I state there are exceptions and that I don't like anime.
Sure, the thing that matters is who made it, but in this case the overwhelming majority of good retro games came from Japan, it's what it is. In different markets some countries do better than others, in this case it was Japan.

>> No.4536268

>>4535153
Mega Drive versions of games tend to be better in my opinion but there are certainly exceptions. Rock & Roll Racing is far better on SNES, for instance. The MD version has the music cut out every time the commentator speaks, and you just can't play without Loudmouth Larry. Western games in general tend to sound like complete arse on Mega Drive.

>> No.4536309

Aladdin shouldn't even be counted because they're literally two different games. It's like comparing Doom to Doom 64.
