I dunno, 1's rank is pretty brutal when you're flying around at max power. The "don't die" strategy is more for the later games.

The gradius series is pretty brutal as far as horizontal scrolling shmups go. The design ethos rewards gitting gud with enough powerups to make you an unstoppable killing machine, while dying a bunch not only strips you of your powerups (which is pretty standard and fair by /vr/ standards), it also makes your ship slow as all fuck.

If you can ever become not-shit, its great though. Just 1cc'd Forever With Me for the first time last night, and did a no death Gradius 3 snes run a few weeks ago. Definitely one of the best series of horis out there.

The series encourages 1LC more than 1CC. This is why the Parodius series started adopting a harsher, non-static rank system.
>>4532963
It's ok, everyone is a beginner at some point. It's less tolerable when you shit on the genre due to sucking at it, though.

The third game was derivative outside of a new of (bad) gimmicks. But other than that and a few of other portable games the series is pretty innovative.
See: Gradius ARC, Gradius II ARC, Gradius Gaiden, Gradius IV (that rank system) and Gradius V. If you count Salamander then both as well.

If you ramp the cpu's to 400% on M,AME the game doesn't actually have any slowdown, and ironically, it's at that point you realize how god damn vital it is. Playing it without slowdown is the definition of impossible.

>> No.4534940

>>4534893
This reminds me of the no slowdown option in Gradius3+4's PS2 port. As if 3 wasn't stupidly hard already even by arcade shmup standards.

>> No.4534959

I love this game, but I've never gotten too far. I usually play the NES port, which was a stellar technical achievement at the time of its release, and I could never get past Easter Island stage. I tried the arcade original and I couldn't reach stage 2 boss. Still, I play it for couple of hours now and then.

>> No.4534971

>>4534959
Try the Nemesis version, it allows you to recover much faster from dying (it spawns a lot of red enemies when you spawn at the checkpoints).
For the NES version you have the Konami code to get you all powerups once, I think. That code started with Gradius.

The sequel (The one localized as "Gradius: The Interstellar Assault") is pretty amazing. Not even just for the Gameboy, it's a great game in general.
