Alright /vr/ the next two games on my list are Earthbound and Shin Megami Tensei II.
I can't really decide which I want to play more but i'm leaning towards SMT.
Which would you guys suggest?

Sin megami 2

>> No.4531850

They're basically the same game, just flip a coin.

>> No.4531881

well earthbound is a pile of wet dogshit and smt 2 is a masterpiece so id play smt 2

>> No.4531976

I like both but SMT2 is the better game with a more unique premise surprisingly

They're both good games. I prefer SMT, but EarthBound is a lot of fun as well.
I'd also pick SMT over EarthBound right now because I'm sick of hearing about EarthBound all the damn time.

EB is more accessible. If that isn't a problem then jump straight into SMTII.

Earthbound is an overrated piece of shit for people who want to feel special about their tastes, but so is SMT2, so it's really up to you.

Hey man, if you wanna try SMT, I wouldn't suggest any of the old games because they are quite outdated in terms of gameplay. Maybe you should try the ps1 (specially persona 2) and ps2 series

>> No.4532402

SMT for the dungeon crawling and exploration, Earthbound for the overworld adventure. they're both great games. SMT's probably better but Earthbound has the better soundtrack

What's actually good then?

>> No.4533024

Earthbound
>random ass shit with non-challenging combat

SMT2
>philosophy 101 with moderately challenging combat system

I'd choose SMT2

Get out of here with that awful recommendation. There's nothing outdated whatsoever about a dungeon crawler being a dungeon crawler.

Depends on your tastes.

If you want a modern themed early dragon quest clone with quirky characters, an emphasis on journey and self growth, and a wide range of theme and emotion, go with Earthbound.

If you want something with more grit, a much darker and more philosophical story, and you enjoy various mythologies of the world, I would suggest SMT2 instead.

Both games are roughly the same length. SMT2 has three different story paths so there is extra replayability in it. Earthbound has one. Both of the interface menus are somewhat archaic, moreso for smt2. Earthbound starts off pretty light-hearted and fun in the journey but it does get quite dark near the end. On the other hand, smt2 is quite dark straight from the beginning and doesn't let up. Earthbound is strange in terms of difficulty; it's a bit over the place, and somewhat tough early on when you're solo. Smt2 starts off fairly simple and ramps up, though it never becomes super difficult save for a few places, like when you temporarily lose one of your companions and the last few bosses.

Both are good games and have things I like and dislike about each, but as long as you give both a shot I'll be happy

SMT has the sleeping bullets, though. Once you have thatyou can breeze through the game, you don't even need to summon demons. At least for a good while.

That's SMT I, they aren't completely OP in SMT II

Earthbound is a simple Dragon Quest clone. Combat is pretty easy but if you enjoy things simple it's fine. It's more accessable and has a more light hearted tone.

Shin Megami Tensei II is a first person dungeon crawler. The combat gives the illusion of difficit'y but there are a lot of broken things in the game that make battles essentially trivial. It has a great tine with fantastic atmosphere but can be overly obtuse in certain objectives.

They're both good if you like jrpgs, Earthbound is nice if you want something a bit simple and kind of goofy. SMTII is cool if you want something a bit darker and sort of cryptic.

It's funny that there are still users here that think hating Earthbound and treating it as the scapegoat for the problems of the retro game community is hilarious. Seeing them have no actual explanation as to whybthey hate it is a good way to tell they're newfags.

The last time I played SMTII, which was 8 years ago or something, I remember very clearly just breezing through the underground areas without demons to save up on Macca and cash. For hours.

I'm not saying SMT II is super hard, I'm just saying nerve bullets are literally not as broken as they are in I.

Except that Dragon Quest isn't "lol random lamp flying around dog appears eat a cookie" bullshit.

The game mechanics are heavily inspired by Dragon Quest, they are almost copy+paste except for the HP rolling they introduced in the sequel. The first one is so much like DQII it hurts.
The setting and aesthetics are what truly differentiate the games/series, it's not that hard to see.
