Why did the Saturn need a battery to tell the date and time? The psx didn’t.

>> No.4531752

The PS1 doesn't have a clock, anon.

>> No.4531754

>>4531747
The battery keeps the crystal ticking even when the console isn't plugged in. All real time clocks need this, unless they plan on being plugged into the wall 100% of the time.

IIRC, the PS1 doesn't have a real time clock.

>>4531747
Brand new computers made this year still use batteries for their internal clocks. So do the PS4 and Xbox One. You need a way to ensure that the clock continues keeping time when the machine is powered off, otherwise you'd have to reset the clock each time you turn on the console.

What >>4531761 said also you need it to save game data to the console if you dont have a memeory card.

So I've heard varying info on the saturn battery. Does it or does it not have a recharge circuit?

I've not looked in my saturn for a long time, is there room for a bigger battery?

>The psx didn’t.
Because it didn't have the time and date to begin with. The PS2 was the first PS console to do that, and it did have a battery.

>>4531786

I hate the psx designation too. We called it playstation back in the day. That said, psx was legitimately used in advertising and game magazines. It's a real thing, but it's fucking annoying.

PSX never had a clock. The Sega Saturn was practically built like a computer, was much more advanced than the PSX. Not only was it able to tell time, but it saved game data as well. The battery is easy to replace too, I just wished the Dreamcast was able to do the same. Sadly I have mod the Dreamcast with a battery holder.

The only thing the Saturn couldn't do was saving Sega from it's oncoming fate as Nintendo, Sony and MS's bitch.

The problem with the term is that it was used as an internal name for the PS by Sony and, as such, has become the go-to term for wannabe poser kids hoping to impress people with what they think is an esoteric piece of retro trivia.

I think it could be a regional thing. Where I grew up we just called it the PlayStation. Then when PS2 came out we called it PS1. But there are anons who said where they grew up they called it psx. So I think it just depends where you grew up on what it gets called.

This is exactly my experience as well. PSX is some new shit I started seeing only in the past few years online.

Then it's pretty obvious you never had EGM coming to your house back in the 90's and that you weren't using any of the sites back then that specifically talked about these things, because even online for any professional gaming outlet, it was called PSX. Whether or not people used the term outside of magazines and online is a different story.

For gimmicks. Stuff like Christmas Nights and other time of year specific gimmicks were the main reason the Saturn had a RTC, I would imagine. There's also the possibility of using timestamps on your save files which is useful.

There's a difference between the PSX and the PSOne, shown here.

Yeah the PSX DVR existed over in Japan but that thing flopped hard, and PSX has been in use since the 90s.

Yeah as a kid who used to read vidya magazines religiously, PSX was common parlance in print in the 90's.

No one ever really said "pee es ecks" out loud or anything, but if you tried to keep up with the system through any means other than word or mouth or browsing the game section at K-Mart you would have seen "PSX" in print at some point.

It does not. Where did you hear that idiocy?

I suppose you could mod it to use a supercapacitor and then it could charge itself...

>was much more advanced than the PSX.

It was so advanced that it wasted half the space on save carts and the memory. Yeah, it had 64k and 1mb save cart, but the console could only see 32k and 512k. Half the space was literally blanked out.

I'm just guessing but I remember it having Christmas themed dashboards. Seeing as games didn't connect to the internet then they couldn't just write a temp update and send it down for the holiday themes.

Sega could have had big ideas but just never got around to using the battery backup.

It was called PSX back in the 90s.

Back when they dropped news of the PS2 being made, even that one was called PSX2, up until the console came out with large "PS2" written on it.
