No, it doesn't. It feels like a dream in Yoshi's Story, where you actually have control over the aiming cursor instead of having to wait for it to line up with an enemy.

Right, which is why Yoshi's Story is the superior game, because it too is about getting high score (much moreso, in fact), and the fun of the game comes from replaying the levels and maximizing high score by searching for secret areas that house enemies, melons, coins, hearts, etc. Yoshi's Island is, again, linear as fuck and the lack of exploration/secrets is what prevents it from being both about score-hunting AND replayability/secrets like Story is.
