How good is Deus Ex? Is it one of the best games of all time?

It's pretty good, but I'm not sure if I (personally) would put in my favorites of all time. You've got lots of varied things to see in this game, but you'll probably be sneaking through most of it. The combat isn't all that great.

It was an innovative game (a rare thing to see this days) with an immersive story that provided many hours of game.

Being able to solve problems in different ways is a good gotcha but i don't really miss it.

It's certainly a well made game but it's overrated. Combat is clunky and some parts of the game are a slog. I feel like things go downhill after Hong Kong.

It hardly has any competition. Not many games that touch the cyberpunk thief/rpg/fps genre. With what do you want to compare it? Pac-man, world of warcraft, or counter strike?

The story is nice, music could have been better, graphic, sounds, animation is laughable. There are better stealth games, there are better fps games, and there are better action/adventure games. The closest game in terms of gameplay is Vampire the masqerade that is tons better but came out later and is not cyberpunk.

I dunno why Yahtzee fapped so much to this game.

a boundary has to be set somewhere and 1999 is good enough. it's not as much what games can't be posted, but what could be posted if the boundary was set elsewhere

2000 would probably be a better checkpoint, since 2000/2001 makes a much bigger gap in the kind of games released than 1999/2000, but changing the rule once would prompt bitch-and-moan-fags to whine for more changes in the future, eventually causing /vr/ to get flooded with PS2 game threads

I can live without Deus Ex threads on /vr/, you can always post them on /v/ and hopefully make at least one non-shit, video game related thread

The mechanics are good, but very clunky. The stealth is clunky, the shooting is clunky, pretty much all of the gameplay can be described as clunky.

The real beauty and timelessness of the game comes from the content matter of the story.

Try to find a single other moment in gaming history that gets as philosophical and transcendent as this conversation. The only game that I can see matching Deus Ex in philosophical depth is Alpha Centauri.

it's actually surprising to me that Deus Ex's combat came out of Unreal's, which was actually pretty great.
The AI in Deus Ex is standard fare "enemies run in a straight line at you"
