any Turrican fans on /vr/? I know it's mostly a European thing

The complete version of Super Turrican comes out soon. It comes with some snes clone console but someone will extract it I bet

Watch everybody forget about it in a matter of days like they did with Starfox 2.

I remember playing a Turrican game on a Gameboy I think and some kind of computer I think. The series never stood out to me to be honest. Is the MD one worth getting in y'all's opinion?
>The complete version of Super Turrican comes out soon
Ooh, it's one of those cut content games?

>> No.4524091

The games never clicked with me personally. Contra and Mega Man are way more fun to play.

Super turrican was supposed to be a 6 megabit rom, but it was downsized to 4 so the publisher could save money

As a result, the entire final level as well as a weapon was removed. Super turrican ends after the alien level which is almost copy pasted from mega turrican.

Even though factor 5 is bankrupt and defunct the copyright holders refuse to release the rom to the public domain. They originally submitted it to Nintendo for the virtual console which Nintendo refused.

Most people prefer mega turrican over super turrican, so it’ll be interesting to see if this changes anyone’s feelings

Level design in these games seems messy and incoherent. It just screams typical low quality euro game (I'm from Europe btw).

>> No.4524342

>>4524034
i recently 1ccd super turrican 2 which is far more linear, it's alright but has some typical euro design, all the mode 7 stages are complete shit, the grapple hook controls stupidly ie when you're swinging if you press a direction it doesn't go that way at all and just does weird things and enemies in typical euro fashion take to many hits, on hardest difficulty they didn't even tune it so certain weapons can't even kill groups coming towards you fast enough. Nice aesthetic but could of been better.

>> No.4525819

>>4524241
all you do is go to the right, occasionally changing direction

what's so hard about that?

I'm not talking about the challenge aspect, anon. Just saying the stage layout doesn't seem very well designed.

Spot on with the too many hits thing. Every weapon in ST2 has a shit rate of fire and you can't unleash spreadshot hell like in the rest of the series. Didn't enjoy the gimmick stages or music as much either. It's more a technical achievement game - looks nice, plays averagely.

Mega/3 has a better explorable stages/neat setpieces mix, a better feel and far less gimmicky stuff. ST1 has this and feels way more like the original 1+2 but it ends too quickly. Looking forward to the complete version.

it's typical of western shmups to, things like low rate of fire are usually to make other aspects of the game possible and not a flicker fest (like rendering ranger) blame the snes for it's shite processor i guess.

Not even European but I care about Super Turrican's final cut more than Star Fox 2. At least we already know the base game is good. SF2 was always trash and now everybody knows it.

ok? and how does it being common on amiga take away from it being common on the snes due top it's weak processor to? Learn to think.

>>4528548
SNES processor is slow and all that but it's the fault of European designer they made games not designed around the limitations of the Amiga nor the SNES (and some Japanese ones like Konami with Gradius III and other early SNES games but you get the idea).

I'm still not over what "The Code Monkeys" did to Turrican with Universal Soldier. Ripped out the Shmup-Levels, added some additional shitty low grade levels and changed everything to fit the Universal Soldier license.

And I still remember seeing that Universal Soldier game being reviewed in some german magazin and the author didn't mentioned (or didn't he notice?) that this game was made from parts of Turrican II, despite the pretty obvious screenshots.

Refitted Euro computer games were all over in the 16 bit era. If you had a few licenses, whether to port a game or to a media property, why not combine them to make a quick buck?

Ones I can think of off hand:
Crazy Cars III (AMI) - Lamborghini American Challenge (SNES)
Sleepwalker (AMI) - Eek the Cat (SNES)
Mr Blobby (AMI) - Super Troll Island (SNES)
Uridium (C64) - The Last Starfighter (NES)
Myth (C64/AMI) - Conan (NES)
Harlequin (AMI) - Madness: House of Fun/PJ Gumball Hero (MD)

Oh, the glorious days of 4-bit-Samples. C64 developers were really creative to do things with the hardware that it was never intended to do in the first place... like sample playback on a system without any sample support whatsoever. The C64 really got pushed way beyond it's limits.

Yeah it's just 'Welcome to Turrican AHAHAHA(echo)' but the music kicks in soon after and all is forgiven.

Shame Super Turrican 2's soundtrack sucks bar like 2 or 3 tracks which are pure Huelsbeck. I really love Huelsbeck's work on Jim Power on the SNES. It's a just a difficult game to love because it's....a difficult game. Get further than the top down level on what the game gives you, I dare you. Somewhere there's a Genesis version with a full soundtrack, but we just have the prototype. Some Steam rerelease was meant to be getting it but didn't. Intrigued about said Steam rerelease, you get hit points which would balance the game tenfold and it has Amigaesque charm.

File: 2.99 MB, 480x368, Hardcore - Unreleased Genesis-Mega Drive Game by DICE.webm [View same] [iqdb] [saucenao] [google]

I would be delighted if at least DICE would finally release their game "Hardcore" that back in the day was supposed to be released on the MegaDrive (development started for the Amiga but shifted to the Sega console).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wD_oFVeYZYo

AFAIK the game was 99% finished but went under with Psygnosis who cancelled all their MegaDrive projects. Well, it didn't went under in the truest sense, since Sony bought it with Psygnosis. But they never finished it, released it or at least ported it. Just like a couple of other titles that were in production at Psygnosis.

And Hardcore looks like it was heavily inspired by Turrican, it's almost a clone.
Did at least a dump of the prototype surface exist somewhere?

I only played the retro DICE games like Benefactor or their awesome Pinball Series, but couldn't care less about garbage like Battlefront/Battlefield.

>> No.4540854

Not a fan of the randomness of late 80s/early 90s European 2D games and Turrican falls victim to this as well.
