The fish-eye thing is nauseating and obnoxious. How do you think a 3D side-scrolling Sonic game (à la NiGHTS or Pandemonium) would have fared in 1995-1997?

I really wish they released this. It definitely would've sold a lot more Saturns and probably would've kept Sega in the console market.

I remember the buildup for this game in the magazines at the time due to it being the first 3-d Sonic. People wanted 3-d games; games like Bug! were panned for being 2-d. A 2-d Sonic on Saturn could have been good, but no one would have cared.

Bug was 2D? I know it isn't a great game, but it literally plays in 3 dimensions, I don't understand

I was waiting for this game for years as a young kid with a Saturn. It broke my hear when we never got it. I probably would have been so amazed by playing 3D Sonic that I wouldn't have cared about the fish eye camera. If it was more like original demo with the Nights engine, that would have been the greatest thing I ever played.

I think it's very underrated and I don't understand the meme that Bug is 2D. You can move in all directions on the 3D plane, and while most of the platforming is done on linear left to right paths there are open areas.

Even if the game turned out to be shit, this still could have happened. If I remember right Sonic 06 made a profit despite being.... Sonic 06.

A Sonic game needed to be out at the Saturn's launch, especially due to the way it launched. X-Treme wouldn't have saved anything

I'm guessing something like an early Sonic Mania wouldn't have held anyone over until a 3D game could've been made, right?

I disagree, you're forgetting how big a franchise sonic was at the time. People wouldn't care what system it's on the same way they didn't care what system ffvii was on, wherever it went the market would follow. I knew plenty of Genesis owners who didn't buy a Saturn and were waiting desperately for the next gen Sonic game.

>t. not X-TREME enough
