Are there any good retro Dragon Ball games?

Super Butoden 2 and 3, Hyper Dimension, DBZ Super Saiya Densetsu
I think those are the best ones. If you must play Butoden, make it 2. SB3 is good but only gameplay-wise, the game is barebones in terms of having anything else other than a VS mode for multiplayer.
SSD is a remake of the first 2 Famicom RPGs, there's a 3rd part that was only released on Famicom.
I also like Legends and the Super Goku-den games, but those are an acquired taste. They're great if you're a fan of the source material though.

I'm a Dragon Ball fan since before Z but I got into gaming later.

DBZ Super Saiya Densetsu is a turn-based RPG? Wtf?

I have a soft spot for Legendary Super Warriors, it was one of those super late GBC games.

Yeah, it is. It also uses a card system. I believe SSD was one of the earliest english translation romhacks, I played it in the year 2000.

No, only DBZ.

Even though it uses DBZ in the title, the first Goku-den game is the entire Dragon Ball story except for the 23rd tenkaichi.
I wouldn't say the Goku-den are among the best DB games, but they can be fun when you get the hang of the battle system and start fucking around in the story mode to get the alternate endings and stuff. Also comfy graphics and music.

>> No.4520615

Not retro but GBA Dragon Ball Advanced Adventure is THE DB game you always wanted to have. Pure fun 2D sidescrolling beat em up goodness no "z" at all.

Well if we're going down that road there's also the Origins games on DS.

Still not retro, but there's two DB games on the DS that are surprisingly good Zelda clones.

Then what's the point? That's the high point of Dragon Ball

DBZ Babby here,

The 23rd Tenkaichi is the start of the powercreep borefest that is DBZ.

Because the 23 tenkaichi is how the 2nd Goku-den game starts (and goes up to the final battle with Freeza in Namek).

>> No.4522051

>>4521794

I have to disagree. Every bodies power in the final tournament felt earned. Goku had to train at the absolute pinnacle of the world for 3 years to stand a chance against Piccolo. Power creep set in when it all became Zenkai boosts and doing situps in gravity chambers

I wish they didn't throw Yamamoto out, He may have plaguarised a few songs but most of his stuff was original.

Since you guys are talking of non-retro games, what about the "Legacy of Goku" games? It's a very nice and comfy trilogy games on gba.

>> No.4524625

I've always heard about these games being decently fun, but I finally played the first one a few weeks ago and gave up after a couple hours, it was fucking horrible.

>> No.4524632

>>4524625
Give the other 2 a try, they vastly improved the gameplay in virtually all aspects. I agree that the first one is total fucking garbage, I even tried to just go back and suffer through it after beating 2 and 3 and I just couldn't do it. So goddamn bad.

>> No.4524765

Is this the only DB game where you can fight Bulma? that's crazy, although fitting given that Goku "fights" her car thinking it's a monster on the first chapter I gues.

>> No.4524791

I played Super Saiya Densetsu like three times but for some reason I think the game is shit and I only have nostalgia for it. Might replay it again sometime.

>> No.4524802

>>4524791
I don't think it's shit, it's just nothing groundbreaking or great. It's a traditional JRPG, average, but it has the charm of being based on DBZ. Graphics are simple but the art direction is solid.
It doesn't do anything exceptionally good, but it doesn't do anything wrong either.

>> No.4524847

I would recommend you DBZ-The Legacy of Goku 1/2, it has Zelda parts in it and a cool combat system.

Legacy of goku 1 is awful, but 2 advanced lightyears in therms of overall quality.

Buu's fury can get a bit easy if you cheese the weighted gear items tho.

This one is well worth mentioning as well.
The gameplay is addmitedly gimmicky but damn mashing buttons on this one is fun.
Definitely the best of the 32-bit DBZ games.
I heard the Saturn version is a bit better, but I played the PS version back in the day.
