Never played these games as a kid so there's no nostalgia here. Checking them out now. 1 (superior Japanese version) is already very fun and I hear 2 is even better.

The consensus seems to be they're mediocre or shit but I suspect that's partly because they were linear, traditional platformers on a console that treated open world collectathons as the "next generation".

Easy to complete, but clearly the kind of game where you're supposed to replay the levels and improve your run; the way they shove time attack high scores into your face constantly makes it pretty obvious. And the tongue mechanics make replaying levels fun.

The multiplayer in the Chameleon Twist 1 is surprisingly quite good. I think Chameleon Twist 2 is better in singleplayer just because, from my memory, it has better controls, the platforming tongue mechanics got a huge upgrade with lots of neat tricks you can do (just playing the training mode is fun to fuck around in), and the level design is much better. Also the graphics are better, doesn't have as much of the N64 blur textures as the first one.

Perfect rental games.

Also, I can't help but wonder how many of the people who said it was an insultingly easy faggot baby game actually went for 100% completion because there is some decently tricky platforming to achieve that, even in the easier western version.

Actually some of the old reviews complaining about it complain about the game letting you "finish" it without playing through all the levels so... yeah I think a lot of them didn't even consider the crowns.

I distinctively remember getting all crowns first try in a single weekend as a child. I could be remembering wrong.

Well it's still a short game, and not forcing you to start over at any point means you don't really need to master the levels. I'm just saying that it's not as easy as old reviews would have you believe if you actually try to get all the crowns.

But if you're into time attack/speedrun-based gameplay, you'll try to master the levels anyway.

Yeah I agree, back in the day I used to prefer 60 hour juggernaut of a videogame ala Donkey Kong 64 but as an old man I'm definitely more inclined for a shorter, more focused experience.

Yeah I just think you still gotta put some thought & reflexes into what you're doing if you want 100% completion. That it's not quite as simple as beating a Kirby or Starfy game.

Exactly my point in the OP about the 'next generation of platformers' thing. I think back then more linear and traditional platformers seemed very dated and people preferred the explorey stuff, whether 3D like Banjo or 2D like Symphony of the Night. I might be wrong but it seems like even stuff that's on a whole other level from Chameleon Twist, like Mischief Makers (one of my favorite games of all time) wasn't too well received back in the day. That game's considered a classic now, but it feels like it's mostly thanks to the online Treasure fanbase.

Back in the 90s video game mags didn't care for it much; even the Nintendo Power review didn't go beyond the 6/10 range. And I know back then a 6/10 didn't actual mean "garbage game" the way it does now but it definitely didn't mean "platforming classic" either. Yet in the 2000s onwards the positive reviews started rushing in: https://www.gamerankings.com/n64/197950-mischief-makers/articles.html

I think it's because people realized that collectathons and "metroidvanias" aren't necessarily the "next generation" and that linear vs explorey is two different types of games.

Let's see if getting 200 in this glorious nihon version-exclusive bowling minigame really is as hard as internet playthroughs make it look

The optional "evil twin"-ish boss using the same mechanics as the player was nice enough, but I didn't expect the first phase of the final boss to also be that way.

Especially when it starts doing your spinning shit.

Fun game.

How the hell am I supposed to emulate the sequel? I get a black screen for both the Japanese and US version in Project 64, RetroArch won't run it either and Mupen64 is annoying to set up.

Should I try different plugins?

>> No.4520502 [DELETED]

How the fuck am I supposed to emulate the sequel? Tried Project 64 and Mupen64, played around with the plugins and no matter what I do it still runs like shit in some way. Either I just get a black screen, a black screen with sound, the speed and framerate is generally fucked, it runs insanely slow or (and this is really fucking annoying) it seems to run perfectly except if you extend your tongue too much there's awful slowdown.

This is really frustrating because I liked the first and it emulated perfectly.

Oh yeah I also tried Mupen64Plus through RetroArch and the same slowdown problem happens.

Hmm that's weird, it emulates really well for me, using Retroarch/mupen64plus

Yeah, I rented this game several times. I never bothered with the sequel because I hated the character designs in it.

Japan System Supply is underrated. I used to rent Chameleon Twist from blockbuster all the time. I like the Japanese designs better.
