Besides Lost Vikings 1 and 2, what can one play in the 8/16-bit era that uses the "switching characters" gameplay? I'm going to start Dondera's Wild but after that i'm out of options.

The Great Battle series, on the SNES.
Specifically, Great Battle 1, 3, 4 and 5.

tried that before, but you can only control 1 character at a time as opposed to TLV which lets you move the 3 of them

Animaniacs Sega Genesis is a Lost Vikings clone, not to be confused with Animaniacs SNES which is a belt scroller.

Though you only directly control one character, Violinist of Hameln is otherwise somewhat similar. Your partner's abilities are needed to navigate various obstacles.

Monstania might also be worth looking into if you enjoy turn-based games. It's a tactical RPG that revolves around switching between control of either the protagonist or his current partner. The character you aren't controlling follows the lead of the other.

The Humans works like that, but in the end it's basically Lemmings turned into a platformer and a bit slow in comparison. Your best bet is still Animaniacs >>4519148

It's a fun concept, it's pretty odd there are so few games build around it

Because it's difficult to design for and has to use a lot of gimmicks to keep it interesting.

Completely different genre but exact same core concept: Maniac Mansion
