Has anyone here played either the original or the port the released in English? Are either or both worth looking into?

is there a translation for the Saturn version?

I don't think so, no. But I have played untranslated rpgs in the past so if that version is better in some ways I may pick it over the port.

The dungeon crawling side of things is just okay, but I thought the story was fun. Reminded me a little of Shadowrun, with the weird mix of spiritualism and cyberpunk stuff. It's worth playing if you don't have anything major sitting on your backlog, I think.
This is all coming from the port, by the way.

Played the port on 3DS. I think it's an ok SMT, I liked it more than Nocturne, but less than SMT1/2/SJ. I feel like they didn't do as much with the setting as they could have and just used the setting for atmosphere rather than a plot. Contrast that with DDS, where the setting and the plot are very interconnected, while in SH, it's some minor details that moves forward the dungeon crawling.

I think it's a very good game. Good balance between the traditional SMT dungeon crawling and a more plot-oriented design.
Also at first I didn't like how you can't level up demons, but then realized that incentives you to keep fusing and trying out different ones all the time.
The 3DS version is the definitive since it has the best gameplay with the most customization, more demons, and more post-game content

I will tell you this, original Devil Summoner and Soul Hackers has one of the most underrated soundtracks for video games, it soaks with atmosphere.
If you know at least a little of Japanese then play both DS and SH on Saturn, if not then just stick to Soul Hackers 3DS port.
But overall I liked Devil Summoner 1 more, especially for the setting, story and characters.

Thanks guys. I've decided to start the English port. The music and atmosphere are pretty great so far.

Everyone else has pretty much nailed it, but I'll chime in as well. It's one of the shortest Megaten games, and one of the only ones with a good story. It's on the weaker side as far as dungeon design goes, but it's still a ton of fun. I played it as my 2nd Megaten game and my first 1st person dungeon crawler and I've been obsessed with 1st person Megaten since. The 3DS port is also excellent.
