Been dicking around with PCSX-R, is there something wrong with the 1.78 graphics plugin? It locks out my emulator so I have to use ctrl+alt-del to kill the whole program so I can switch it off, and I can't switch between screen sizes or use esc to quit back to the menu either.

Should I just use 2.9?

Man, the 3d geometry in PS1 games was something else. Everything just looks like it's about to burst from its seams. The textures are a like skin that doesn't just quite fit the object they are wrapped around.

Can anyone explain to me why it was like that, specifically on the PS1?

it's simple, Playstations suck at 3D

Are you using lilypad? If so, set keyboard input to raw instead of messenger. The default setting doesn't let you use the keyboard.

Is that it? Even running PC games in software mode, you still get straight edges on 3d objects instead of that weird warped geometry you see on the PlayStation. That weird look has always fascinated me, I wonder when it becomes the next hip thing to emulate by the indie crowd.

The PS1 had no Z-buffer or perspective correction. The Saturn and very old PC games also suffered from something similar.

Integer-based software 3D rendering.

The PlayStation had a powerful GPU, but it did not do any 3D operations. It was strictly 2D triangle deformation.

>>451384
The warped edges are due to the lack of perspective-correction. Some old PC games (like Road Rash, for example) exhibit similar artifacts because they also used affine texturing.

I really hated the early 3D era. I wanted 2D to comeback. Everything looked awful to me.

I love the way 3D games look in the PSX era. Games like Crash and Spyro looked awesome

It looked great on some games that weren't trying to look realistic.

Like Medievil - it added to the cartoony, creepy and surreal look.

I guess I don't mind since I grew up with it.

I hope this isn't stupid to say, but....

Why don't you just play it on a Playstation? it's not like the system or the game is expensive by any means.

Was trying to play Nuclear Strike on PCSX-R but the map is flickering like crazy when you open it and I can't see shit.

I know, I passed half my 14 year old days thinking what 2D games could have been with the "power" of psx.
When I played Metal Slug it blew my mind, I still ask to myself these days why didn't they do more stuff like it, it was gorgeous.

Hell it is gorgeous.

They still have their place if you want hi-res graphics and filtering and shit. But yeah, emulators like Xebra and Mednafen are boss if you just want to play the games like they actually are.
