It's a goddamn PVM, this one doesn't look like a bad choice If you aren't going to bother with RGB (honestly a good S-Video connection looks about as good for most consoles).

I have a PVM-1351Q (an inch smaller but has RGB). I don't have any RGB cables at the moment but S-Video looks great on it. Even composite on my Saturn and NES look really good, but obviously not as good as S-Video or RGB due to line crawl and whatever weird shit that the NES does to avoid it.

I no longer had an Atari computer, so I hacked off the plug and attached a VGA connector. You can probably build an actual adapter though, knowing the pinouts. You will definitely need to set your video card to output a 15KHz signal. You will likely need to screw with the brightness/contrast/gamma settings to get proper voltages.

So I'm planning on doing this mod for my SNES Mini.

I'm inexperienced with soldering but I'm going to give it a shot.

After that I need an RGB SCART cable. (And a SCART to YUV transcoder, but I got that covered)

Can someone link me to a SNES RGB SCART cable that would work in an NTSC SNES? I've been reading and it's confusing the fuck out of me, like certain ones don't work certain ones do, or some shit.

Also, if I were to mod my N64 for RGB would that same cable work?

They specify how many columns can be resolved in a width equal to the height of the picture. Okay, you might have slightly less color fringing due to the smaller stripes (if your convergence is good enough to match), but it's functionally not going to give you any more resolution.

Actually, at 800 lines, that monitor is effectively 1060px wide. That's considerably denser than a standard-definition LCD would be.

>Just for more nostalgia?

If nostalgia was a factor then we'd be using RF or composite, which nobody in their right mind uses unless they have absolutely no other option. There don't exist LCDs that can properly display 240p, 480i, and very, very few have a native resolution of 480p (And even that's only useful for Dreamcast, Xbox, PS2, and Wii), and even with 240p processors (Which are ridiculously expensive), there's still the LCD's lag to worry about.

That's where you're wrong. You don't have all the advantages of a a CRT with just filters. All you get with filters is the color blur. You don't have the others CRT advantages, like the natural colors, perfect contrast, real black, true white. You aren't freed of of LCD's disadvantages too, like ghosting effect, upscaling, input lag and so on.

I'm curious if anyone might be able to answer this;

I recently hooked up my GXTV to use for audio since my PVM only does mono(the GX has some damn good speakers, don't mind the sub either).

I use s-video from a multi-system cable for my SNES currently, but leave the composite lead hooked up anyway.

If I run that composite video to the GX, either via the PVMs composite out or directly to the GX, everything is perfectly fine. But if I leave the GX blank, or if I'm using component, such as from the Wii/PS2/etc, I get a slight jitter in the PVM's picture. This also happens if I run the component's green out to the GX to read as composite.

I guess my question is: What gives? Why is the PVM perfectly fine if the GX is getting normal composite, but running greyscale from Green or even just a blank screen bothers it?

One of the best games to use to demonstrate input lag is Mike Tyson's Punch Out!!

You have exactly 12 frames of animation, or 200 milliseconds, (this delay was chosen for a reason, see below) to react to one of Tyson's tells before the punch that follows connects.

The average human hand-eye reaction time is around 200ms. Well-honed reflexes can get down to around 150ms before running into hard physiological limits.

Scaler and LCD panel delays will introduce input lag of between 3-6 frames, or 50-100 milliseconds.

Do the simple arithmetic and you'll see what this does to your chances of beating Punch Out!!

Not really as long as you run it at 640x480. At resolutions higher than that the scaler/converter has a hard time keeping up and you'll get some screen tearing and lag, but it does 640x480 just fine.

It's pretty much plug and play, only thing I can think of is there are some tiny switches on the side that you'll need to flick around to get it to output PAL or NTSC based on your set but Windows just picks up the thing like it's a monitor.

Pillarboxing fixes the aspect ratio, filters can simulate scanlines if you really want them.

The real reason to use CRTs is because they flicker. When the game framerate is the same as the display refresh rate on a flickering display you get beautifully smooth and sharp motion. The only way to replicate this on an LCD is to make the LCD flicker in the same way, eg. using a 120Hz LCD with black frame insertion.

See http://www.blurbusters.com/ for details.

Just to note, RetroArch can output low resolutions to more powerful CRT computer monitors by simply increasing the refresh rate, to say 120Hz. 256x240@120Hz for example actually does hit 31kHz.
That can add motion blur though. But nothing like ghosting or delay, so it's all good in my opinion.

In Europe, SCART was a necessity. You couldn't use RF because the channel assignments were all different, and different audio encodings were in use. You couldn't use composite or Y/C, because there were different color subcarrier frequencies and encodings in use. The only thing that Europe has in common is the 625-line, 50-field-per-second scan rate. You need to use raw RGB and separate audio or it won't work everywhere.

That depends on the monitor. My CRT gives me scanlines so strong you can see them up to 1280x960 without looking for them. At that point they blend in like LCD pixel edges, but still. 800x600 can have very strong scanlines, just not flat black.

Not really. The output contrasting the scalines is very easy to get used to and it's only 18".

Don't use FCE Ultra GX, though, it sucks compared to the Nestopia core in Retroarch Wii. WiiMednafen is by far the best for PC Engine/Turbografix games. Snes9xGX and Genesis Plus are both good, though.
