>> No.4511116

I had one of these and loved it. It was only really good for fighting games because you hovered your right hand over the buttons like tiny arcade buttons, and hold the left part with a joystick grip to use the dpad,. The angled face for the buttons meant that you didn't have to brace the controller against your leg to to do multiple button inputs when using characters like Blanka.

It's the same idea as those keyboards that are split and angled down the middle. It's just a more comfortable way to slap your fingers on the buttons.

The 4 buttons on the outside of the regular 4 buttons are programmed to each characters special moves. You moved the switches to the corresponding character and never had to input specials again. In theory.

In real world use, it often just spammed inputs that weren't timed properly enough to make a special move go off. The dpad was at least very good, so it was still useful for fighters.

you know, when I think about it I guess that would be a pretty good alternative for your usual c64/Atari joystick. I found it in a list of alternatives for the Master System joypad, which for all it's limitations I still find superior.
As a tangentially related thing, I know a MS or MD controller works fine in an Atari or Commodore, but are there issues in getting it to work the other way around? There's some proper beefy looking Commodore sticks I've been considering as an alternative for the few MS games that aren't gonna work with my MD pads, but I've heard the issue of buttons come up from a few people. Would the Master System(or in this case Mega Drive with a converter on top) recognize the buttons as separate? I have very little practical knowledge of c64 games so I don't know if it's games even have two button functions, or if the sticks were just designed with lefties and such in mind. Would it just think pic related has two #2 buttons?

The Amiga/Atari joystick standard is passive, just dumb switches that close over the DB9 connections - so 1 common ground wire working over 4 direction switches and up to 3 buttons, and a 5V line that must have something to do with the mouse? Most sticks only had one button, including that one you posted - it's the same button repeated.

The megadrive controller is active, it has chips inside, and these process what the switches do to deliver electrical signal patterns/voltages, i'm not sure which. Either way the Atari's on/off functionality might work, but you'll normally only get one button if that.

I remember someone posting up recently about damage being caused by swapping between standards, but i can't see that being the case as it's all just 5V logic or lower.

They may look crude but handle pretty well and as mentioned combine dual analog and dual shock support which makes them unique afaik.

Yeah, that's the "good" Fighting Stick PS with metal top plate and proper switched buttons. I also own the crappy variant which is plastic with membrane buttons, oh and a "good" Saturn version which is mint in box.
