You asked for our opinion and I gave you mine. I give you that example since it's one of my favorite games of that gen on consoles, gameplay-wise. The fast smooth look to it is pretty nice, it being simplistic also helps you not get too distracted with the background and focus more (the Gamecube sequel can be a bit too much with 4-players).
I hope you don't think I'm a fanboy since in the 90's I had the PlayStation, I only got to play the N64 much later and I'm not too into it.

I have an opinion so controversial I'm sure even /vr/ would lynch me for it. I genuinely believe PS1 (not N64) graphics have aged better than PS2 graphics. GameCube and Xbox were a bit better as their character models were often detailed to a much greater degree than most PS2 models were (who already appeared as blocks with blurry textures vaguely resembling clothes).

I think Deus Ex's models look better than San Andreas', I also think Shenmue looks better than Yakuza. I think fucking Driver 2 is more impressive than any of the PS2 GTAs. Even back in the 2000s, I thought PS2 games looked like shit.

It comes down to whether you prefer blurry textures or (heavily) pixelated ones.
I always preferred the anti-aliasing on N64, made games look smoother.
The thing that kills PS1 graphics for me is the incorrect perspective and the warping textures. Some people have nostalgia for it, but I never liked it.

>> No.4506015

>>4506001
>That game looks very crisp, almost like a PS1
PS1 games do *not* usually look crisp. The only ones that do are those that run in medium-res mode of 512x224 or whatever, like Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Soul Reaver, etc.

The VAST majority of PS1 games run in 240p like N64, and they don't look any more crisp than an N64 game does. On the other hand, virtually every single N64 game that doesn't use Expansion Pak runs at 240p.

That is the real reason people say PS1 looks crisp. Cause of the occasional use of the medium-res mode which almost never got used on N64. Everything else is cherrypicking.

I don't think there is that much of a difference. The only reason you think PS1 is "crisp" is because of the untiltered textures, but they make graphics come out awfully, compare the face of the robot on this screen. Anti-aliasing makes the textures blurrier, but also more defined.

The textures in Mega Man 64 don't look blurrier because of bilinear filtering - they look blurrier since the source texture on N64 is like a quarter of the PS1 resolution. The fact that it looks even remotely passable is all thanks to the bilinear filtering.

>I've tried playing multi-platform games on a PS2, Gamecube and Xbox simultaneously and most of them look almost identical on all platforms
Usually they were written for PS2 as lead platform. If programmed properly for PS2, the Gamecube version would be downgraded and/or have slowdown (e.g. SSX Tricky, THPS3), while the Xbox version would basically be the same thing with a fewer high-res textures thrown in. If programmed badly for PS2 (e.g. Sonic Heroes) then the Gamecube version would run better since that console's architecture is more friendly to badly optimized code.

RE4 was originally a Gamecube exclusive though. It's not the right approach to determine power by looking at specific games, because depending on the circumstances of a game's development, it might not have used a system's power properly (like judging N64 based on Superman 64).

It's better to seek the opinion of professional developers who would have had experience testing a console's capabilities with dev tools.

Looking at the difference between classic and modern Amy, I imagine there'd be some pretty significant differences. Her ears wouldn't wobble, her wings would've been flat textures, and she certainly wouldn't have had the boob wiggle. They might've gone with a more form fitting catsuit to simplify things, like a jumpsuit, but it could've still had a low neckline and a basic hourglass figure. So maybe kindof Catwoman-esque, but with bat wings. That's just my guess, though.

Amy used to be reeeally different, though, so it's totally possible Rouge could have looked nothing like her modern incarnation, had she existed back then.
