Just heard that a new Nintendo game came out. Feels a bit meh. Really derivative of Pac-Land. The "punching blocks" gimmick gets stale after a while, and the washed-out colors don't help at all.

Have you actually played Pac-Land? It doesn't even have physics.
This game is GOAT, but probably normies will ignore it and demand more Donkey Kong shit.

That literally never happened.
But for one to know that requires not to be underage.

Not retro, fuck off.

This is now a Tennis for Two thread.

This. Literally everyone was hype as shit over SMB and most of us saw Vs SMB before we saw an NES or simultaneously so we knew what the colors were supposed to look like.

OP post is accurate though because /vr/ is full of hipsters with arcane knowledge like what the fuck Pac-Land was at the time. I'm sure at least a few jaded neckbeard Atari fans complained about Mario when it was about to come out.

I'm sure there were cRPG players complaining about its childish aesthetics.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Pac-Land.

In all seriousness, I've never played it. It looks pretty terrible when I look up gameplay footage, like a Flash game, but it has some features that were no doubt interesting for its time. It took a while for Mario to incorporate inclines into its gameplay, since SMB only had flat surfaces. And the whole endless jumping thing looks pretty Kirby-esque.

Pac-Land was a pretty common arcade game. Jack Tramiel at least probably badmouthed Mario but the only neckbeards who would have were "serious computer gamers" who thought things like scrolling and physics were for children.

>”Yeah, Mark?”
>”William managed to get a game made on his oscilloscope - it’s like a tennis match!”
>”Huh, really? Neat.”
>”You think he can sell it as a toy or something?”
>”Are you kidding? Who would want to play a game on a screen?”

We had pac-land at the local laundromat in around 1985 and most kids hated it. First stage was easy (because of the hard hat hidden in the 4th fire hydrant) but no one locally seemed to know all the secrets that made the later stages manageable. Pac Land ended up sitting unplayed long before SMB or wonder boy came out.

Speaking of wonder boy it was by far the hottest game that year. SMB was big and both games had a lineup to play them at the arcade, but wonder boy visuals simply blew us away and the action was way more intense (especially the boss fights vs mario). When a good wonder boy player showed up a whole crowd would gather and watch him play all afternoon.

This feels way more like a /v/ thread than a /vr/ thread, despite you discussing retro games.

Kids bored during Christmas break, wait till Monday.
At least it's not like that poster that recently considered DKC a questionable game due to having poor ludonarrative dissonance.
