ITT: Gameboy & Gameboy accessory nostalgia & storys

I just gave in to a massive nostalgia impulse and bought a Gameboy classic with backlight and contrast mod, as well as my top 10 games from childhood after emulating on my 2DS for the past few years. I considered getting an everdrive but figured I wouldn´t play anything besides these games anyway.

So while browsing around my memory what I had as a kid I remembered pic related bad boy. Who else got it? I remember it being pretty awesome and kind of want it again, but the few I checked out all had scratched magnifying glasses.
Anybody got an Idea where to get replacement glasses? Some other cheaper gadget I can salvage?

On another note I want to print myself some repro packages and manuals but can´t find resources. Do you got a link for me? High quality scans prefered.

Also to get things started a greentext:

>Be 5 years old
>christmas eve
>open Mystic Quest for gameboy
>Love it but get stuck soon
>Can´t figure out to walk an "8" around the palm trees
>There´s a hint in the game but can´t read
>Figured it means I finished the game
>Years later pick it up again
>Mind blown when I see I merely played the first quarter of the game

Also the hyperboy was rad. Unlike many other useless dongles and stuff this thing actually works and feels great. You can even set the stick to 4 or 8 way. The light was godsend as a kid and it has build in speakers that are pretty good.

Not nostalgia, but I just finished reshelling my GBA SP AGS-101.

This, plus Super Mario Land is in top 5 but Super Mario Land 2 isn't even on the list? And yet Golf and two different fighting game ports make it in?

I'm almost more confused that Faceball 2k got included. I like it, but I'm still confused.

Also, is it me, or did they just use a screenshot of arcade galaga for #23?

Its actually pretty simple. When you push a button the device pushes the button on the gameboy too, its directly beneath it. the DPad is 4 burtons where the diagonal position in 8 way mode pushes two directions at once.

The latest GBA, I think model 101, is objectivly the better choice. The Display is nice and the backlight is perfect. The 001 models got a frontlight which are okayish but the inferior solution.

However I kind of like the crappy old monochrome GB screen better and the form factor is actually pretty important to me. I just like that bricky piece of shit. Plus you can use all the obsurd addons like pic from the first post.

Its not good because the screen can only be modded with a GBA frontlight, its build differently from the GB classic and cant be lighted from behind.

Not only does the lighting suck but the different screen sizes (you actually replace the screen with the GBA one) eill result in black bars, afaik.

Gameboy stories hmm?

I don't know if I have any good ones.

I fell on some pretty hard luck, my brother and I were basically starting over, living with our mom after our dad did something stupid. All I got to take with me is a few comic books I read a dozen times and some clothes.

I followed my brother around a lot, and one day he led me to a skate park. I didn't really skate so I just sort of wandered around and played wih some bugs. My brother knew I loved video games, and brought me a kid who was selling a gameboy color with Tetris, Pacman, Metroid 2, and Tennis, for 12 bucks. I only had about 6 bucks, my brother, who used to be a cool dude haven't spoken to him in 6 months because he's not so cool anymore gave me the extra to buy the stuff.

Come to find out, the kid selling the gameboy? Those weren't his to sell. He took his brother's shit to sell. The little porker went straight to McDonalds and bought a ton of burgers and fries with his ill gotten profits. The guy was really cool about it though and let me keep the gameboy.

Got me through some bleak times. I almost beat Metroid 2.

That wasn't my first gameboy or anything though, but in the past it was just a pokemon machine that eventually got stolen, and then it's replacement had to be left behind when my dad did the stupid thing mentioned previously in this post.

Didn't own any videogames until I was in highschool, and bought them with my own money from part-time job/birthday money. Got a Game Boy Color and a Dreamcast. For the GBC I picked up Shantae, Wario Land 2 & 3, LOZ: Link's Awakening DX, and LOZ: Oracle of Ages & Seasons and had an absolute fucking blast with all of them.

I think on my first GB I had nearly 200 hours into Pokemon blue and 20 hours of that went into catching a fucking Tauros in safari zone. Almost 20 years later my wife starts a fresh game, walks into safaro zone, encounters a Tauros pretty much at once and catches it with the first ball. God damn.

Also, remember this thing? It was stupid popular in my school when it was released. I dont know why though, it doesnt really do anything cool. Must have been the tamagochi effect.

But really the few weeks were Pokemon was the new shit were really awesome. Dozens of kids in school played it and everyone brought their gameboys to school to trade and fight. I made some friends that way and I became a little popular with the nerds because I was the pokemon master that could beat everyone because I had 6 legit Mewtwos on lvl 100 that I aquired by finishing the game 6 times on two cardridges during summer vacation. I beat everyone until one day a really silent and smelly girl appeared and beat me with a fucking Turtok and other random Pkmn. To this day I don‘t know how this was possible.

OP here. Most of my stuff arrived and I figured anon may be interested in the backlight mod. Let me dump that files and talk a little about it.

This is the Gameboy Porta, a third party storage box. It comes with a cord to carry it around your shoulder, but I removed it for convenience. Because seriously, you don´t want to walk around with that shit around your arm.

As a storage box it´s pretty nice though.

It holds your Gameboy and up to 4 games in sleeves. Unfortunately there is nothing to prevent the cards from falling onto the display so I will cut some foamy stuff in form and put it between games and system it before I use it. This box was pretty cheap, around 5 Eurodollars, which was the most convincing argument it had going for it.

Here comes the main event. It has been modded for with backlight and contrast mod, as well as a new front glass. This one is actually made of glass and not plastic to prevent scratches. You can get these glasses for a few bucks from aliexpress. However, the glass is a little thicker than the plastic ones, so its a little bit elevated, as you may notice on the pic.

And here is why I love the backlight mod. It´s awesome. The image is crisp and well contrasted. I chose blue LEDs, but you can get them in different colors. Originally I aimed for green ones but they were a little darker so I went with the blue.

Shortly after I got my GameBoy my mom quickly realized what a money drain the batteries were so she bought a battery pack for me. I remember when we were at the store buying it Mega Man III was for sale and the price was the same as the battery pack, I wanted to get the game instead of the battery pack so bad but my mom said the battery pack would be the better choice in the long run, so we got that instead. I guess she was right, but I lamented missing on the game since I never saw it for sale after that, neither did any of my friends have it, so I couldn't play it until emulation years later.

Incidentally, my pack was not >>4498327, mine was square instead of a rectangle and more bulkier, it clipped on the back around the cartridge slot and made the GB heavy and uncomfortable to use, most of the time I would play on the bed with the charged plugged on the wall instead. It stopped charging after a couple years, I remember taking it apart and seeing that it had 4 AA batteries inside, they were silver with no branding whatsoever and smelled weird, but go figure, I tried to charge them with an old charger my dad had (probably around 8 years old) and they actually worked. I remember thinking that was pretty cool and surprised the batteries didn't catch fire while charging or damaged my GB.

You're mixing up two things. You can only mod the original screen with a frontlight, but you can get a backlight by replacing it with the (smaller) screen from one of the GBA SP models. I spent a ton of time on the GB and GBC as a kid, it was always one of my main consoles.

Lots of memories associated with specific games. I remember waking up super early in the mornings at my grandma's house in Florida during summer vacations, and I would play Wario Land 3 or the Zelda Oracle games underneath a lamp while it was still dark outside. I was also obsessed with Mario Golf GBC for a while. I had these little plastic Mew and Pikachu figures and I would set up make believe scenarios where they were golfers or something.

I got the Gameboy Camera when I was very little and it confused the fuck out of me, especially stuff like the "what are you running from?" screen.

I also had the printer and and I printed out some of the pictures you can take in Link's Awakening and stuck them on our fridge at home.

Pokemon.com had a Pokedex made in Shockwave.
