I snagged Deus Vult 2 and I like the level design and overall monster placement, there's been a lot of conveniently placed barrels and the dualy pistols are neat. But it's also total fucking bullshit because so far there's been a lot of overtly cheap moments, like half a dozen spectres and some hellknights teleporting all around you while locking you in a tiny cramped room that's dark as fuck, or 12 chaingunners popping out of a monster closet as you're going up some stairs and shooting you in the top of your head before you can fire back, or flipping a switch that teleports a bunch of shotgunners, pinkies, and imps right on top of you or some other shit.

Pic related, I don't know if it's my monitor but there's 4 or 5 dead spectres here and besides the one with its foot in front of the blue light I can hardly see any of them.

DV2 has some really unorthodox decisions that I don't think really work. Apparently he did a retrospective and talked a lot about he did some chess-style thinking for some encounters, which makes sense but I'm not sure 100% works because chess is chess and not Doom.

There's been like 5 or 6 encounters so far where if I didn't know what was going to happen I'd die within seconds or barely survive with single digit HP left. I don't really remember Doom 1 or 2 being like this, but a lot of wads I play seem like they're balanced around quicksaving a lot, otherwise you're getting murdalized in an ambush and losing 20 minutes of progress.

I think it's pretty good. It does something that's distinct and different from the other games in the series, but still has a style that fits it, which is just about the best I could have asked for the game.
I had really extremely low expectations and was pleasantly surprised, I kind of just expected it at best do be like Doom 3, either comparable, or better, but sets itself apart. The gameplay isn't 100% perfect, but it is fun, I enjoyed it a lot.
It's not much like the classic games, but I also think that's good, we already have the classic games, and their mods.

The setting and story is kind of vaguely set up to make it cannon with the classic games, but honestly I just prefer to look at it separately, the style and tone of classic Doom is really just way too different from the modern game to mesh seamlessly. Mostly it kind of uses Doom 64 as a jumping off point, which is cool, but I also never looked at Doom 64 as, uh, "canon" to the original games, further, if you look at a lot of the detail and aesthetic of the new game, it cribs a lot (but not all) from Doom 3.
Classic Doom, to me, feels really way too retrofuturistic to really fit Doom 64, Doom 3 or Doom 4, I'm a minority in this opinion though.

we need to talk about nails
seriously, what's the deal with them?

first of all you can hold 200 of nails. sounds good right? nope, Super Nailgun shoots them away in mere seconds. it's not like they have high damage output either, they barely last enough for couples of shamblers

at the same time they're awkwardly placed in levels. you can't hoard them for tougher battles unlike cells and either they're everywhere so you're compelled to use it instead of grenades or shotgun even if they make more sense or they're gone or you have to backtrack through the whole level to collect remaining ones. meanwhile there is rarely a case when you're below 50 of rocket ammo and shells are basically limitless.

seriously fuck nails, they should've let you keep 400 of them or remove regular nailgun and have the super nailgun eat 1 ammo instead of 2 for the same damage.

any-range precision weapon as aside from the thunderbolt nails are the only thing that can hit 100% accurate all the time (as rockets are sometimes too big to avoid clipping on level geometry)
it's like this:
>single shotgun: midrange, hitscan, not accurate
>super shotgun: close, hitscan, not accurate
>nailgun: mid to long range (as in close quarters its DPS isn't enough to get rid of knights and fiends before they shred you), projectile, accurate
>super nailgun: any range, projectile, accurate
>grenade launcher: short range, projectile, inaccurate
>rocket launcher: medium to long range, projectile, accurate
>thunderbolt: short range, hitscan, accurate

Just because it's a really good gun doesn't mean it's unbalanced, there's lots of times where other weapons and even the regular shotgun would be better to use. make a better particle system for GZDoom
Right now all sfx use an awful lot of actors, each of which follows decorate logic and eats up a lot of performance.

Particles operate on formulaic logic and eat ~6 times less performance.
Reworking pasrticles and adding the ability to define a bit more comples behaviour with a few formulas, special commands, giving them basic animation and level-geometry-only physical interaction would allow people to greately improve performance of their mods.

And that's about it. It feels like another game that's pretending to be doom, or like someone just made a really extensive mod that changed all the textures and weapons and stuff to look like doom. Even the 3rd or 4th level in Doom 1 is more complex than pretty much everything in Doom 4. Every fight blends together and none stand out in my mind after playing it while there's bunch of fights in 1 and 2 that I'll never forget. This shit >>4493514 is like every fight and 3/4ths or more of the monsters in the whole game are teleporting in periodically rather than just being there in the world. The game also basically forcing you to do executions because enemy pinatas are the only consistent way to stay stocked up says that the devs had no idea how to properly pace fights and levels. Health and ammo capacity being up-gradable instead of just shit you pick up also doesn't add anything to the game.

If it was just one or two of these things instead of all of them it'd be a lot closer to actual doom, but instead it's just a decent but bland FPS with a doom paint job.

I kind of find it a bit underwhelming, Epic 2 was by far better, much better atmosphere and much better exploration, though with more monsters than I'd usually like. Probably because it was made much later after Alexander had become much better at mapping.

I did kind of like some of the architecture, mostly on the second map, the castle structures were pretty to look at, but the map is very desolate, and not so much in an interesting and scary way, but more like there's not a lot to do. The music isn't very good, and quickly gets grating, too, because you're left wandering long stretches.
The castle structures don't have a lot going on inside them, and actually kind of feels like what would otherwise constitute a small and tight map, but spread out extremely thin.

Some good ambushes here and there, and the last fighting, where numerous mancubi are let out on the wide plain, teleporting randomly, is actually a *really* good encounter, genuinely. I was taken by surprise and really had to leg it to avoid become roast, really had to weave and dance, this I felt was the highlight of Gravity. I'd actually go so far as to recommend someone to try out Gravity just to fight that encounter, just because I think it's such a good idea and I think people should take note from it.

They're as linear as old Doom maps though, you find a key, then go to the key's door, rinse and repeat, with some non linear levels here and there with intersections that let you progress in a different order. Throw in 4 or 5 simultaneous explosions in mods like Guncaster or Trailblaser and my PC that can handle modern Doom at 70 fps on high goes from 200 fps down to 50. Launching a bfg in guncaster always brings my frames down to sub-30.
All the explosions spawn at least 7 sfx actors, each of them spawns trails that are actors on their own,etc and that ends up with hundreds of actors for each effect with dozens of effects on screen.
9 out of 10 of those actors could've easily been done as a particle, if GZDooms particle system would've been more flexible and didn't try to emulate Quake to a t.

Maybe if GZD lit each texel individually and did some noise and posterizing, then people would be more amenable to GL lights. The crisp look could be retained.

The way I would balance the SSG in doom is fire 4 volleys of pellets:

They're like, serviceable, in that most of the game is there and most of it plays and functions like it's supposed to, but it's kind of inferior, and has some sloppy edits, partially because the Red Cross is fucking gay, and partially because Germany is fucking gay.
It's not the best experience, but it's also far from the worst, you could be playing it on the 3DO.

The Doom 3 port isn't bad IMO, I always thought the flashlight should be a quick button function, the game is best played as a run and gun shooter and the horror doesn't really work that well in 3, so might as well make the best of it. The gunfighting actually gets pretty fun and exciting once you get into it, and the chainsaw is SO fun, if you put your mind to it, you can reliably defeat most monsters with it and not face much difficulty.

Yes, the shotgun in Doom 3 is, in my opinion, fucking terrible, because the range is beyond pitiful, it's basically jizzing distance, or all the pellets spread out at some extremely bizarre angle and you don't hit shit.

The chaingun is more satisfying, as it gives off a meaty *THOMP* with each shot, and the plasma is strangely satisfying with it's gentle *PEW* noise and bright blue shiny shot.
The chainsaw in Doom 3 is the highlight to me, because it both sounds powerful and horrible, but is, it does a really good DPS that can let you deal with imps, pinkies, revenants, cacos (when you can reach them), hellknights, pinkies, arch-viles, even the tentacle commandos. All you gotta do is to bumrush the enemy as soon as you see them and carve them like a Thanksgiving turkey.

Often, many enemies will do a brief pause to yell at you when they see you, and this is your chance to sprint and and buzz them. It gets really frantic and exhilarating in my opinion, and it's the highlight of the game to me.

Cybermage (when played keyboard-only, with correctly customized controls) on hard difficulty. Ridiculously varied game gameplay-wise, insane density of content, also, the best level layouts Bradley has ever mustred. Also, DO NOT play the tutorial mission, it's shit, just dive into the game and bear through the 1st level.
PC-Powerslave is like HeXen1-lite. Extremely good level layouts, but very simplistic (even compared to other Build FPS games) combat, including some very shit bossfights, and clunky movement (strafe left/right keys are basically shortcuts for strafekey+turnleft/turnright, meaning, you can't strafe and turn at the same time either way). But, overall, decent, really decent. Console version are supposed to be something like "Metroid Prime 0", but I haven't played them yet.
Heretic has like the best bossfight in all of 90s FPS games (d'Sparil on the last difficulty).

Eradicator is pretty damn good gameplay-wise. It's pretty much "Build FPS made for mouselook" (although 1) it doesn't use Build engine; 2) the mouselook is mandatory due to absence of auto-aim of any kind; 3) it's actually the best mouselook implementation in 2.5D FPS games, at least, non-modded ones). Overall, it's something like sci-fi version of Blood (there is its own weapon gimmick, camera-in-camera, and tons of inventive weapons in general; there is comparably dreary atmosphere and comparably limited palette; the layouts are comparably cubic; etc.) although without the gags AND WITHOUT A SINGLE FUCKING HITSCANNER PERIOD. It's really monotonous (visually, first and foremost) though, despite all the attempts to liven it up through variations of mission goals. It also has some really anal first person platforming.

Anyway, as I've said, it's pretty much "Blood: Sci-Fi Mandatory Mouselook Deadly Serious Not A Single Hitscanner Edition", and it's a very good game in its own right (gameplay-wise, I rate it higher than any of Marathons, both Dark Forces - maybe, MotS excluding, and, yes, higher than Blood).

One thing people in the doom community take for granted is the quality of the tools available, and I guess the "unity" of those tools for lack of a better term. If you want to make doom mods all you really need is DB2 and SLADE (I realize there are other tools out there).
The build engine on the other hand (caveat: its been a few years since I've looked) is a janky mess and that is very much reflected in its tools. Mapster is the only real map editor to speak of,
and it pretty much looks like vanilla DOS Build but with a few bells and whistles. In terms of every thing else (CON code, ART files, and the GRP archive they all get stuffed into, etc) theres like 8 different tools, each one seemingly
abandoned in 2003 or thereabouts. In many cases original developer tools are still used.
For ports, Eduke32 is the only real game in town. If this sounds like I'm shitting on the build engine and its community, I'm not.

Or you can hit up the Eduke wiki, which has some stuff about the con language (con = decorate/acs basically) and other topics. I think they were working on a new lua based scripting system, but again its been a while.

Looking at these sprites over and over and in such detail has really given me an appreciation of what was done to make them look unique from the Player's sprites. Slight edits to the length of their limbs and heads, as well as the zombie torsos being shifted forward to give them a more hunched and shambling look, something you never get a chance to study in-game.
It's funny that these two guys in 1993 made these sprites with a pixel paint app and some clay models, and here I am in 2018 with all these resources, but without a clue in the world.

WIP of me making my own modernized take on Immoral Conduct.
I kind of like playtesting things I do with it by just plain playing nice pwads, one of my goals is to make weapons which are more practical for the harder enemy encounters people like to do with pwads these days, but I like balancing that by making the monsters more dangerous. The one here is the first Epic, by Eternal

I have a number of things left to do, I'm thinking once I'm done with most of the rough work on the weapons, and the quick buttons, I'll make a public Beta release, summer would be earliest, but then, last time I said Christmas would be the earliest, and here we are.
