Scalpers on ebay, pawn shops/thrift stores or the local retro store for the Authentic Experience™.

My local retro store doesn't price anything and uses pricecharting.com on their phones to look up games right in front of me, so I rarely shop there. They usually ask $5 or so over the pricecharting list, so I show them buy it now ebay auctions that are less money including shipping, and usually more complete.

They then complain about people not shopping local and won't budge on their price. I then complain about local shops using online prices and not having a clear price on their merchandise.

It's a fun little dance, I'm sure they hate me but you can't bitch about people wanting cheaper (ebay) prices when you basically use ebay to price items right in front of your customers. They also love the fact when I tell them that the 10% ebay charges should cover their overhead.

I know this guy who often goes to the states and bring me stuff for dirt cheap when compared the prices i gotta pay in my home country.

I move between two places fairly regularly. One of my local retro stores is a mom n' pop/enthusiast operation which has some really good prices, sometimes well below what they're going for online; they get games in that are pretty surprising too (pristine MIB Game Boy games, etc). The other is a small chain, generally slightly more expensive than online with the occasional better deal.
I pop by occasionally to take a look depending on where I'm at, but I usually resort to online shopping because it's often the only option when I'm looking for something specific. You can only call a store so many times and ask "hey do you have this game?" and receive a "no sorry" so many times before you throw your hands up. It is great having them in general though because often these places are the only ones that do repairs or cleaning for older hardware. Regrettably I'm not very savvy with that sort of thing so it's a service I value. I know this is silly, but it also feels good to shop locally every so often; just fork over some cash and take what you want home with you. I really hate trying to find reasonable online listings in good condition or worse, receiving something not as advertised, when I can examine what I want in person and know exactly what I'm getting. I'm willing to pay a bit of a premium for that. I've not had much luck with local online listings like Craigslist.

I should probably know better than to take the bait but I really do like buying games when I can. Emulation works in a pinch, like when something is out of print and costs a fortune, but if it costs well below the price of a new game to purchase an old title and play it on real hardware why not? Not all games emulate correctly anyway and you're going to have to mess with the options a lot to get it looking up to snuff in my experience.

Fleamarkets are where I've amassed most of my collection, especially in the early 2000s when you could still find cartidge games

My local fleamarket is actually really good right now for ps2 era stuff
