Let's settle this, SNES or Genesis Aladdin?

My vote is for Genesis, better appearance game play and even sound. Only glaring bad thing was the shit end boss.

>> No.4487931

Both unremarkable games. Instead try these: Super Mario World (SNES), The Revenge of Shinobi (MD).

Only the sprite animation, the actual spritework and backgrounds on Virgin's game aren't as detailed and polished as the Capcom game.
>game play

Debatable, both games have acceptable sound quality.

Capcom's, only kids who couldn't afford a SNES back in the day and are blinded by nostalgia for Perry's game think otherwise.

SNES is bouncing off of enemies, poles and other items. Sega you for to climb ropes, jump over coal, swing your sword, etc.

>> No.4487969

The problem is not the sword or "jump over coal", the problem with the Virgin game are the hitboxes and the level design.

Having enjoyed both I'm still going to have to side with the MD version simply because it's presentation was way above the SNES version. The thing is with the SNES version they were developing a game, with the MD version they were developing Aladdin shrunk down for a console. So while the SNES version is better designed as a game, the MD version is better designed as an Aladdin product and panders better to that desire, which was the only reason I was playing an Aladdin game in the first place.

I haven't played either of them but since fans of the Genesis version can't seem to shut the fuck up about muh sword and muh animation, I'm more inclined to believe that the SNES version has better gameplay. Capcom had a good rep with Disney properties anyway.

I don't really think that in terms of narrative that's any less violent, you're still attacking him with a sword in order to permanently erase him, you never go to any genie dimension where they show up again, they may as well have been vaporized and sent directly to hell in excruciating bloodless pain.

The final boss being so fucking awful really left a sour taste in my mouth for the Genesis game. For all the sword shilling, you have to go kamikaze to use it against Jaffar. The game very clearly expects you to carpet bomb him with apples, since they regenerate during the fight, and this method means you barely get to see Jaffar or actually battle him. You just throw shit at him and he's dead in five seconds.

The animation on the SNES game is worse, but everything else is better. Controls are tighter, level design is more fun, and the game actually ends on a high note, that fucking snake was awesome.

Virgin Aladdin is an okay game, but it does have issues both mechanically and desgin-wise. Sprite animation is really good though.

i don't know if i agree with that, the environments on genesis are pretty detailed, but everybody seems to post the image of the first place you spawn in when you start the game which is just a wall

They are less detailed than the Capcom game, which have a lot more stuff going on in the backgrounds. The sprites themselves are also more detailed.
This is not a surprise, you mention the Genesis' higher resolution, and the SNES has more colors, which is why there's more detail.
That's not to say the Virgin game has bad background though, they're still decent, just not as rich.

>> No.4488852

>>4488850
once again it's down to animation which you can't easily see on screenshots, you get a lot of parallax scrolling clouds in that desert level on genesis

>> No.4488858

>>4488852
Funny you mention that because on my screenshot there's also crazy parallax scrolling on these city buildings.
And yeah I already given Virgin's game the nod about having the better sprite animation, my point is that the Capcom game has more overall detail due to more color density.

>> No.4488859

>>4488852
But parallax scrolling clouds aren't detail. It's animation. Which was exactly the point >>4488830 made: Genesis has better animation, but SNES has better overall graphic detail.

>> No.4488870

>>4488858
i think the difference is that capcom made aladdin on SNES look like a typical 16-bit game

you've got your regular sprite animations, and some detailed layered backgrounds with parallax

on genesis they tried to make it look more like a cartoon with the detail up front and with the background detail / parallax more subtle, like a supporting element rather than the focus of detail

i still think the genesis version looks a lot better overall due to the fantastic animations and big sprites, i mean that's the reason it got so much attention back then while aladdin on SNES looked good but it wasn't doing anything new

the fucking hitboxes are fine though when you hit a guard with your sword they die unless you get into a sword fight with them you can clearly see the guards swing animation too. so its a blocked attack its not a bad fuckin hitbox. You idiots wail on the fucking sword button and you wonder why hes not dying cause youre too stupid to take a hint then you blame the hit boxes.

>> No.4489589

>>4489574
calm down, the hitbox issue is not only something that happens on enemies, it also happens on aladdin's land detection, and also it's not about enemies "not dying", it's just you can notice the hitboxes aren't very tight, and it's not something exclusive to Aladdin, it's something people have noticed in other Perry games like Cool Spot and Earthworm Jim.

>>4489589
thats just the way they are programmed though where you have to get both your feet or most of the bottom of your hit box on the hitbox of the platform its not like a japanese game where you can have the corners of the hitboxes just barely touch and it counts as a landing. There aren't any jumps in aladdin or earthworm jim or jungle book that are that difficult

>> No.4489719

>>4489717
I agree, there aren't many parts where jumps are important, I can think of a few but in general levels aren't designed around actual platforming and more designed around finding an exit in a semi-maze. But that still doesn't change the fact it feels sketchy and unpolished.
Graphics and sprite animation is great, but gameplay lets a lot to be desired.

OP here and I decided to play both of them again. So here are my thoughts.

Genesis has the better soundtrack and level design but fuck it has some cheap baddies such as the bats and ghosts. But the bosses are forgettable and Jafar especially is a joke.

SNES on the other hand has more interactive pieces despite the detection on some platforms being shoddy. Last boss is easily better and overall being more comfy.

If I had to pick one now, nostalgic aside, I would go with the snes.
