Art is personality. You cannot create art detached from personality -- the Jackson Pollack may not have taken much in implementation, but the _idea_ was still the artist's.

That said, lilith is one of those things that takes extreme complexity and thought to look simple and devoid of human input. It's definitely worth a Cacoward even if only for effort involved in bending the engine so much.

Pollack put effort into his work though. Plenty of people say they could make a Pollack-style painting, but no one ever tries. If they did try, it would end up being a brown, muddied mess. Dunno about most seemingly simple, but my favorite type of complex art are mechanical automatons.

The one pictured here, built in the fucking 1700's, can be programmed to write any line of 40 characters with a quill that it even dips.

Don't do that, run the other one. quakespasm-sdl12.exe is the older version kept around for probable compatibility reasons and uses SDL1.2 which is known to have input issues on a lot of systems. As of QS 0.93 (which you're playing, as that's the latest full release), the normal quakespasm.exe uses SDL2 which doesn't cause weird mouse issues, so use that instead.

I had mouse issues. Just downloaded the latest shit from the website and dropped it into the Quake folder with "overwrite all". Worked fine after that. Only resetted my resolution settings for some reason.

Finally starting to work these frames in, to make the Garand. Gotta make the PING effect, which at first I thought would totally be bothersome, but thinking about it, it'll probably be pretty easy, I'll just do duplicate primary fire and reloading states, then change those as needed, doing checks and jumps to determine which action happens when.

As of now, it uses 16 units of rifle ammunition to load 8 rounds in the magazine, this is to balance out that it's far more powerful than the AR15 and penetrates enemies, but I also find that this consumes ammo far faster than I'd actually like, so I'm thinking I'll go back to 8 for 8 like normal.
I don't really want to start to make a whole bunch of new ammo types, I'm fine with pools being pistol ammo, shells, rifle ammo, grenades, and then special, I kind of like the simplicity that grants me as both a modder and as a player.

The bayonet animation actually kind of works, at least motion wise, but it's still not really making it clear that there's a blade on the end of the gun.

At least, not in any sources I read.
It reproduces several paintings and poems that are stored mechanically on the brass cylinders, and then "relayed" to the paper by mechanical means.
It is basically a player with brass cyllinders being recordings, and those recordings are pure analog.
To record something on those cyllinders, a backward process must be done to a presumably wax bases from which the brass ones are replicated, but the device for doing so did not survive.

On the flipside, I find that a magdump from the Garand actually kills a mancubus pretty readily and reliably, compare to a magdump from the AR more or less killing them reliably, so maybe the Garand using 16 units to load it's magazine isn't that bad for balancing.

I think I might have to beef up the health just a slight touch on one or two monsters.
The fact that the faux fuzz effect works in this version of GZDoom, and looks quite good when applied to the spectre's own blood, makes me want to put in a gib state for pinkies, that shit would look radical with the fuzz applied.
I also forgot that Plutonia is actually fun, quite intense.

Yeah, doing the PING was actually way easier than I initially thought.
It will now visibly send the spent en-bloc flying with it's classic PING, the clip bouncing against surfaces and making dinging noises as it does so. Very satisfying IMO, many games only add the initial ping and then don't bother with the sound of the clip hitting against surfaces.

I know. I might have to do something to it, though I don't really know what, I guess I could apply a grain filter to it or something.

It's probably how I'm kind of just fudging reload animations here, the gun swinging down to the side and doing some motion and sound and that's your reload animation.
I think I'd go insane trying to put together an actually visible reloading animation for this.

General consensus is that Doom 2 has a strong first cour and then after that quality varies wildly.
Some hate the middle and last third entirely, some find a few favorites here and there, some like many of the maps which are generally disliked, but many will tell you it's not as fun past a certain point.
To me, it's full speed ahead until Map 12 where my enthusiasm just dies, because I hate that level and there's a lot of levels which really aren't fun which are coming up, there's many dull moments until I reach Barrels Of Fun.
Doom 1, while a simpler game in some ways, I feel holds a more consistent quality throughout, there's few maps I dislike in it, nothing that just kills my stride like Doom 2 Map 12

It's not hated outright (not by many people anyway), it's just seen as imperfect. Final Doom uses all the new assets it brought in and did some quite more impressive things, and in general, the new assets that came from Doom 2 have been an absolutely invaluable gift to the community for the past two decades, which in my opinion offsets the uneven quality in level design, we really could not have sustained ourselves as well as we have without Doom 2.
Doom 2 could have the worst level design in history, and it would still have been worth it for the assets, but thankfully, it actually isn't that bad.

I used to like them a lot, for Doom, but gradually I've just come to prefer centered ones as they generally fit the style better (IMO).

That said, with centered weapons, you can have angled reloading sprites, which is a nice compromise of having centered weapons and showing off a cool gun.

Because it makes for a distinct enemy that can make for distinct encounters.
Yeah he could fire straight rockets all the time, but how fun is that? He isn't really that different from other projectile enemies in that regard if that's the case.
The fact that his projectiles are sometimes homing means that you need to consider him at longer ranges and the projectiles in flight (the homing ones) completely differently to any regular fireball, and the fact that they aren't consistently homing, but only sometimes, makes him less predictable.

He's perhaps one of the best additions of all of Doom 2, next to the Arch-Vile, simply because of what a complete change he is compared to other monsters, both alone and intermixed in other encounters he completely turns the fight on it's head and you have to reconsider your strategies, he makes things more interesting.

Besides, Doom 2 gives you the super shotgun, which helps tremendously for when they get up close and want to start clobbering.

Here's some more to the hatelist:
Incinsistency in damaging liquids - same liquid doing varying damage or no damage at all per author's desire, especially bad when its on the same map, but inconsistency across the wad is terrible too. I'm playing Plutonia 2 right now, and it is very much guilty of this - mud and blood are completely random on whether they are safe or not, in the same levels. Weird, considering that it is a rather renown wad, I thought this flaw would catch more attention.
Textures that are pegged the wrong way, resulting in "folding" effect when a wall slides up/down. Plutonia2 is also guilty of this.

Traps on optional powerups that completely negate the powerup - like invul that locks you in a room with monsters for 30 seconds. You loose nothing by skipping it, you gain nothing by taking it, and sometimes you loose more than you gain. That's simply a bad encounter design made by someone who tried to be clever but failed.

I'm very surprised by just how good this is. Out of all the "Vanilla Plus" mods I think this one is the best I've ever played. It's balanced super well, lots of visual options so craptops like mine can play it, and most importantly it still feels like Doom, just with more mechanics. My only gripe is that Barons are a bit much in groups like on Tricks and Traps but getting the BFG, which is now some kind of multi-seeker-plasma launcher, can fix that up pretty fast. Aside from that I do prefer the tracers off just so it's easier to tell what's going on, plus my laptop can handle the projectiles better without the visual fluff.
Now I'm just wondering which modder is making this under a different name because I have a hard time believing that it's just some guy considering how well crafted the mod is.

That is basically a remix/reimagining of the most iconic areas of the stock Doom levels with some added extra twists.

So anyway, a while back I did a sky for a dude who needed a sky texture for a Jovian moon (Ganymede, was the one). I threw one together from Duke Nukem 3D resources and a stock photo. I never tested it at the time, but testing it recently I saw that it was covered in faint black splotches (apparently the black used is a very faint almost black), and this is extremely visible when applied.

I cleaned it up so it shouldn't be visible anymore and the texture should look ok now. If he's here he should use it instead of the previous one posted. If anyone else wants to use it, go ahead.

This is why I prefer the older versions a lot more, because they had a smaller group (or even one guy I think) who kept a consistent mapping style and art direction for the maps. It felt like an actual TC and that was pretty damn satisfying to play. Freedoom 1 doesn't have that at all and basically never has. Sure it's fun, but the levels feel more like Quake where you jump between aesthetics with every intermission screen.

The music is pretty good now at least, way better than whatever that filler garbage they made when they found someone had plagiarized half the tracks in the game.

the explanation is very simple, he is hell-bent on the idea of the latest version of gzdoom being all that anyone needs to play doom. so if a wad doesn't work right in gzdoom, he's under some self-imposed geas to make it work, unless he can find some justification to get himself out of it.

such a justification can be for example if the wad in question is too obscure, like some 1994 shovelware thing that nobody's ever heard of, or if the wad is something like a giant slaughter map, which he personally considers unplayable garbage (this is why it doesn't bother him that nuts.wad is a slideshow in gzdoom, he thinks nuts.wad is a garbage jokewad).

but as i say he absolutely needs all the sufficiently popular well-known doom maps and mods to work in gzdoom, so that nobody ever needs to use anything else, and all other engines die off.

so if something comes along that is utterly broken in latest gzdoom with no hope of recovery, his only course of action is to try to have it buried. this has so far been successful, there have been broken mods but they don't meet a sufficient threshold of popularity to oppose his vision. he knows full well he'll never be able to support it, but that won't matter if 99% of doom players don't care about it or haven't even heard of it.

unfortunately however, lilith shot to popularity, and eventually was given a cacoward, ensuring its place on best-of lists for the next 5 or 10 years, so there's simply no way he can justifiably ignore it. people will constantly come along, look through the best-of lists, and find things that his engine can't deal with, making them look elsewhere.

being driven by this compulsion to be the proprietor of the single "one-stop shop" for the whole of classic doom, lilith's popularity leaves him in an impossible situation, with the resulting observed emotional breakdown.

I don't think that's an unfair take, really. It's just a huge square room with all of the monsters. Well, two square rooms.

As for slaughter maps in general, like real and intentionally playable ones, giving him the benefit of the doubt, he *probably* wouldn't mind making them more playable if he easily could, but there's ways the engine is structured that just isn't going to make this easy.
Having lots of monsters do lots of checks over lots of linedefs a lot of the time, is just going to be taxing for ZDoom/GZDoom, simply by how it functions, you'd really need to do some pretty substantial changes to get around this as I'm understanding.

This kind of reminds of how Doom rpg had enemies named after mythological creatures, but look nothing like them, since they were just colored classes for a species of demons.

Having played the mod now, what I mean is that his attention to detail is really really good. Pretty much every weapon feels good to use and has a good situation to use it in. The other systems and moves he added work very well with the existing gameplay and don't tend to break anything too badly (Barons in tight spaces being the exception I noted in my other post). Hell, just the faster weapon swap combined with the ability to delay the reload of shotgun shells opens up a lot more flexibility on how those weapons are used. I'm also fairly sure that gib enemies scares the others more too, rewarding overkills so they're not such a resource waste.

Brutal Doom could really benefit from somebody who has a good knowledge of balancing and minute gameplay tuning like that.

Visual puns are the best puns. In that screenshot alone, I tried to stuff in multiple puns on the store name and slogan, the albums/EPs shown are the ones that had been released by the time Quake dropped, the whole visual (other than the spotlights) is just a direct rip of dm2, and the angled orange box on the counter is a placeholder for a C64.

For reference: NIN album covers do NOT translate well to Quake's palette. Most things don't, actually. I can see why people say not to try to make realistic looking things.

Sound design is my greatest beef by far though, Jesus, Brutal Doom has *atrocious* sound. So I did a bayonet, patterned it after one I thought would be interesting.
The fittings (pommel, locking piece, hilt + muzzle ring) on these would probably be brass, but I figure since it's like in the late 21st century or something, they could be repros these ended up with somewhere along the way, they're already not quite genuine by being 7.62x51mm/.308, so it'd just be one more thing.

Nice to hear, though it'll be taking a while.
As it is right now it uses twice the ammo of the assault rifle, but while doing high damage and penetrating enemies.
It can be fired fast, and reloads are pretty quick, quicker if you fire the last round and the gun ejects the clip for you.

I figure I might as well make the fittings brass (or some other metal which gets anodized to look brass-ish, or plated with brass), just for distinct visuals.

When a mod has too many guns in the same slot (as in the number keys), you'd have to press a number more than once just to use a different gun.
MetaDoom has altered versions of the classic Doom arsenal, then new weapons based off other games, which work differently.
To keep up the core gameplay, most of these weapons representing said classic arsenal show up first, because they're integral to how Doom plays, while the rest is usually additions to make the game play differently.
This isn't the case with both the BFG and the chainsaw, because they show up after the other weapons in their slots, which are the Soul cube, Unmaker and the axe.
For a mod that wants to keep up with Doom's core gameplay, this can be bad, not only because you'd have to press 7 or 8 more than once, but the Soul cube is intended to be used at rare occasions, while the axe is slow, which could affect how you play the game.
It also doesn't help that, despite the progression based randomization, the melee weapons are still fully randomized, so, if you only get an axe, you'd have to at least find a way to gib a Sawcubus, to see if he drops a chainsaw.
I guess that should explain it.

The reload functions are pretty slippery. If you end up pressing the reload key for more than a split second, whatever function you're trying to toggle on gets toggled off.

Also that shotgun enchant for the hazmat suit seems overpowered. Pretty powerful for something that consumes only one shell. I think something that powerful should belong only on a weapon's alt-fire.

I usually refer the map pack as internal maps as they only works with Hunter's Moon by now, anyways if you're going to play vanilla then no, they aren't not essential, they contains only the Dungeons maps which is pretty much a showcase of what the mod will show when the true campaign arrives but there's no lore or anything else besides Doom's default gameplay, start the map, kill demons, kill boss if it does have one, exit map, call it a Tech Demo for now.

So I just finished Doom 2 (my first old FPS too) and gotta say the level design is hit or miss. Some demons (specially chaingunners) sniping you is annoying as hell and feels wrong. There's some cool secrets, some nice maps, some that feels like bad fan made crap, but I had fun nonetheless. Don't wanna play on a harder dificulty tho, some encounters are a pain in the ass (like Archviles on cramped spaces or sniping you from advantage points) on normal and I don't even wanna start to think how these would play on harder modes).

I'm divided now in which I should play now, Blood (which I'm actually looking foward to) or Shadow Warrior (which is hella fun).


So it's not a full campaign yet and when it does, toasters wouldn't run it, right. But it's so gorgeous I will check it out.

I'd suggest Blood if only because I had more fun with it. I've played maybe one minute's worth of Shadow Warrior, and while being able to chop a lot of enemies in half with one katana swipe is hella fun, getting instakilled by like the fifth fucking enemy in the first map of the game, who I can't even see because of how dark the room he's hiding in is, isn't so much.

Not to say that Blood is a cakewalk, like half the enemies in the game have hitscan attacks so you're gonna get your shit wrecked a lot, but it at least never completely stonewalled me with one specific enemy I can't figure out how to deal with.

I'm on the second stage in a area that looks like a ticket booth, and get annally devasted. The weapons are fun, but also feels unreliable, shotgun isn't as eficient like in Doom or SW, or even every other game. It's unerving, but also exciting, it's a very unique feeling, kinda like a actually horror game, but without the horror atmosphere.


Funny because I felt more defenseless in Blood than in SW (I'm played the first 2). The first part of the first mission is tricky, but just tank some shots to the face until you get the Riot Gun and the Uzis, that's why there's plenty of health packs around that area. And then be careful of those TNT ninjas. They explode when they die and may or may not spawn a "lost soul" type of enemy.

I don't know about random damage, but a lot of it's to do with locational damage and armor. Armored enemies are resistant to shotgun shots unless you shoot their weak areas, arrows do practically nothing to enemies unless you headshot, shooting enemies in the arm doesn't hurt them that much.
