http://www.technominds.com/news/get-ready-year-2038-problem-unix-millennium-bug
>Very simply, it is when the computer software can't interpret the date properly past the year 2038 and it reverts back to December 13, 1901. It will cause the software to fail. It is caused because the system time is a 32-bit integer. It is often referred to as the Unix Milennium Bug.

OH GEE MILLENNIUM BUG NEVER HEARD OF THAT BEFORE

If /vr/ hits the year 2000, will it die?

Yes. Just like with Y2K they will all burst into flames and explode
>tfw 90% of this board doesn't remember Y2K

>> No.4481013

The time will loop back around to the start but otherwise stuff will continue to work the same. Most /vr/ things aren't dependent on the real time anyway and you can set the time back 20 years if you need to.

Who cares? Do you know how bloody simple it is to change your computer clock? And there is no doubt software already in existence that can fool other software into thinking the time is something other than what your hardware clock is set to.

It's just not going to be a problem at all for anyone.

Yup, just like how the y2k caused the lights to go out forever, computers to stop functioning and killed millions of peopl...
Oh, wait...

the 2038 one is going to be... well, not big, but it's gonna be annoying for anyone still using older formats and software that hasn't be updated to use 64-bit timestamps (and there's no reason to use 32-bit timestamps in current software or new formats)
that being said, games don't use unix time, and even if it did affect it, having the data be correct isn't particularly important for gaming

>>4481006
I distinctly remember dick all happening, and the worst that personally affected me was minor display bugs (like the Windows 3 file manager showing 200X as ";X" instead of "0X").

Thanks to Dreamcast being 128-bit, it goes up to 2085, so, I'm fine in 2038.

>> No.4481518

>>4481517
acktually the Dreamcast is 32-bit. It just has a 128-bit vector unit.

N64 on the other hand is genuinely 64-bit. The only real retro 64-bit console.

It could affect how it stores savestates, making you think the latest savestate is actually the earliest. I don't think emulatores rely on date for crucial stuff.

But 4chan uses UNIX timestamps for images.
Maybe the board starts using negative numbers for filenames and ends up breaking.

Click on literally any image.
It's 4chan file name is the unix epoch time. I think it might have some salt in it or something if two get posted the same instant on the same board.

>> No.4483276

everyone is already dropping 32 bit computing, by 2038 the only 32bit processors still operating would probably be some legacy unix servers

>> No.4483365

We still have the issue that two images overlap so you get a botched thumbnail and the second image is lost.
It's been known since forever and people have been banned for CP because of it but it hasn't been fixed.

Intardasting. Never noticed. So in billions years we'll be fucked unless 4chan was coded by tards long before it was born. A distinct possibility.

For quite some time Emulators are telling the game whatever time you decide it should tell.
For all my emulated N64 Animal Crossing knows, it's 2001, and it always will be.

It somehow survived for 14 years. 20 more isn't that much longer.
