Original if you can tolerate the resolution and for the love of God don't pay for the enhanced edition. Also, set the game speed to 45-50 because the default is pretty sluggish.

First plalythrough should be in the original either way. Bugfix patches and widescreen are also nice. TuTu is fine for a second.

Enhanced is okay as long as you stay out of SoD and you can mod out the Beamdog OC, but at that point you're mostly saving yourself modding time.

I've done it twice, once in 2009, and once a few weeks ago. Having just done it, I'd say:

a dwarf fighter, a paladin, or a single-classed mage

the dwarf fighter because dwarven bonus to saves on top of high str/con and being a single-classed martial is pretty sweet because you can wreck most things
the paladin will have access to DUHM even in the later chapters, which is also pretty sweet, and they have good saves as well
either way, be good with maces and warhammers; the illithium mace of disruption and crom faeyr are both awesome, and you can always use both with TWF

a single-classed mage will just always have the best spells available, which get pretty good in bg2, as well as enough slots to really use them a lot, as opposed to somewhat sparingly with anything less than single-classed
bg2 had more items for mages than I remembered

regardless, you can get a party to cover any spot you need; I just used jaheira, minsc, nalia, valygar, and yoshimo/imoen and the only thing I lacked was the restoration spell (but there are plenty of scrolls you can buy)

You can buy enhanced edition and disable all features that came with it. The only reason to play original over EE that I can think of is multiplayer which is literally unplayable in EE without Hamachi. Every other reason is autistic bullshit because gameplay is identical in both versions (EE with additional stuff disabled and original), if anything EE is better - you can zoom in and out, you can choose any resolution you like, the only thing that mildly irritates me in EE is quest log, but come on - it's not that I haven't played this game hundreds of times in the past. And new players will be fine with it because they won't know old, better quest log.

Why not any low resolution game? A game running at native 640x480 on a CRT looks infinitely better than the same image does upscaled on an LCD. Also you can use it to display resolutions like 640x400 with the proper aspect ratio, pixel perfect. CRT is very valuable.

Literally no reason to not get enhanced unless you played it back in the day and are hunting for nostalgia.
This is coming from someone who played the games 15+ years ago and doesn't even like a lot of the additions in the enhanced version.
They reverse engineered and rewrote most of the engine and it's just a less buggy and more enjoyable experience. Don't listen to the puritan parasites on this board.
