What do cigs in Trailblazer do?
There are 2 kinds of cigs you pick up, they give you armor and health.

The best part is that's not even what I meant. That's upgrades. I can stand upgrades not telling you what they do, because they are always straight up better than original weapons, and the way Trailblazer works you will generally stick to one or two weapons you like the most, so upgrades let you 'reinforce' your choice of weapons.

But occasionally in the level, replacing god knows what powerups, you can find these glowing blue blueprint squares?

EDIT: Okay, apparently they ARE sorta explained at the actual mod page. I mean these things - pic related.

There's apparently TWENTY of them, they're extremely situational, super rare as they MIGHT spawn alongside backpacks, and trying to remember what the fuck they do in the heat of battle and if it's worth spending scrap on them is utter bullshit.

"progression" Crafted upgrades add one enhancement, and the blueprints add another.
For instance "progression" based upgrade for Minigun adds a second slow-rate machinegun you can synth-fire alongside the base one. Blueprint one gives instant spin-up.
Crafted upgrade for pistol adds a silencer
Blueprint upgrade adds nuclear bullets.
Crafted upgrade for sawnoffs adds another barrel
Blueprint upgrade adds one more barrel (they stack)

Basically put there's 2 upgrades per gun - one you can get anytime if you have enough parts, another you have to find first.
There's also a blueprint for Wiskey (HP restore), Armor, Punch upgrade, BlastMaster upgrade (explosions dont hurt you, enemies drop blastsphers) and Alchemist (allows to store spheres for later activation).

On your image: Grenade upgrade. Wiskey, Blastsphere effect increase, Cig bonus increase, BFG upgrade, Punch upgrade, Blastmaster upgrade and grenade launcher upgrade.

Guns at their base are already a tad more powerful than original, and the mod is designed to provide more power as you go through a modern-type megawad. As we all know those kinds of wads usually go into slaughter territory at around midpoint, which is where progression really kicks in providing you with an arsenal balanced around that.
You simply do not need to "get all the items" on other kind of wads.

Quicker progression will leave you a powerhouse against kiddie-level threats. You can get all the schematics and a lot of parts by summoning backpack items - each backpack provieds you with parts for upgrade and a random schematic.

Is there a simple way to adjust player health or damage resistance in gzdoom? I really like the realism mode in BD's Hell on Earth megawad, but a single imp fireball does 96 damage at 100 armor, so often one mistake means death and I don't really like using save states to get through a level. The tooltip says you take 900% more damage, I think I could live with maybe 600% or 700%.

>12/22/2017: Fixed a rather embarrassing bug involving death states, added more comments to some files, added _READ THIS IF YOU UNPACKED_.txt to tell people where the juicy bits are, changed shotgun tracers (again) to use the exact same underlying code as the default tracers and be only 75% as large as other bullet tracers to avoid screen clutter.

Turns out I in all my idiocy accidentally allowed a state fallthrough from certain player deaths into a gore-effect-free death used for MDK, oops.
Also in the interests of helping anyone who wants to know how to mod or how this mod works inside I'll be adding a lot more commenting. Because the game is a lot harsher and expects a lot out of you.
When the game was being developed, the devs regularly felt that the game was getting too easy, as they kept getting good at it, so they kept upping the ante.
There's also the bug in the original .exe where you actually take more damage on lower difficulties.

In short, Blood is a rather challenging game by design, and a bug actually makes easy mode harder. I think the challenge makes the game really fun, but it takes some getting used to.
A protip when guns starts blazing is to never stop moving, jump run and duck like a madman, it confuses the cultists and they have a hard time hitting you (running from cover to cover also works). You really don't want to be hit, because gunshots hurt like fuck in Blood.

Blood's tough. The first episode is particularly difficult because ammo is so scarce. The later episodes are much more generous.

Learn how to use the pitchfork (kill zombies without getting hit, rush down cultists and hitstun them, don't waste ammo on rats), learn how long it takes for flares to set enemies on fire, get comfortable with using the dynamite's secondary fire to toss around corners, and TAKE COVER. Like >>4478198 says, crouching actually reduces enemy accuracy.

There's no shame in playing on the third or even second difficulty at first. It really is a much harder shooter than its contemporaries. But once you get it, it works so well. It honestly might be the best 2.5d shooter.

I would say that Brutal sort of does this right, it does give feedback in that violence really is violence, and not just floppy ragdolls.

But I think Brutal's gore is kind of goofy and actually a bit unsatisfying, particularly it's sound design. It does the right thing by actually showing things explode in a spray of blood or burn into charcoal, but it doesn't do it in the best way.

The feedback is not "violence is violence"
The feedback is a response to player agency.
Different guns do different things.
Shooting enemies in different places does different things.
Player choice in gun and where to shoot it results in an immediately apparent result that is different from any other choice of gun and shot location.
Violence is a byproduct, but a very noticable one.
Most people get this subconsciously, but with their consciousness they see ultraviolence and feel that they are having fun (they just dont realize that it is not because of the violence) and they link the two bits together.

This is why Brutal Doom goes down the slippery slope - Mark does not realize that what makes his mod special is not "Hyper Violence", but a "HyperViolence In Response To Player's Agency". So he keeps adding more violence and shiny blips while completely neglecting "response to player's agency" bit.

The Fold is a mod where a lot of care went into some parts, while others got complitely neglected, like sound design and basically everything else that is not immediately apparent.
Like a pickup messages.
Every thing that you can pick up from health to weapons, keys and items - it al gives you a generic "you got a pickup" message that does not really tell you waht did you pick up.
So you may miss an important item, because you simply didn't knew you picked up one and everything looks weird so you don't really know what everything is.

Trailblazer is exactly opposite of that - putting extra info and snippets into pickup messages to ridiculous ammount, but that kinda highlights the tongue-in-cheek nature of the mod.

It'd be really cool if Crucified Dreams was a single player adventure, the maps are real pretty, the music and atmosphere is really good. 10/10 gothic, easily on par with Quake IMO

I guess maybe someone could try retooling it, but the maps are mostly arenas so that'd be a lot of work to make them working maps.
Also there might be quite a lot of linedefs for monsters to check against, so framerate might not always end up so good.

SNES Doom ran mostly on the SuperFX chip that was in the cart itself, since SNES processor was unable to keepup with the game's math side, and the console has much less memory than a full-feature Doom needs which led to it being the way it is.
The only way to make it better would be to add another in-cart CPU and RAM, but that would be cheating.

BFG edition was gimped because of the consoles - you can see compression artifacts on textures that was done to preserve memory - and the PC release was done because "why the hell not".
Original doom that was supplied was ok, but IIRC it ran at higher resolution of 960x600

If you are talking about nuDoom on switch - its settings are below the lowest that are possible on PC, at least in portable mode, IDK if docking changes anything.

I think the reason why id and Bethesda won't do a big Doom series re-release with plenty of fanmade content has to do with copyright issues and the use of certain assets for some mods.

A while ago Mark released Monsters Only version of BD as a base for other modders to work with (that was before Project Brutality drama)
The only thing you need to do for this to work properly is to add damagetypes for weapons and tweak a few other things, depending on the mod you are trying to adapt.

Overthetop nature of both mods lends itself pretty well to extra brutality.

Did I get drunk, play plutonia on uv, open up Slade and said "I can do better"? There's a fucking archvile in every single encounter, often in open areas. There's stealth zombiemen. Chaingunners everywhere, with one chaingunner being dark blue and hidden behind foliage. The item count was maxed out before the final encounter, meaning what I had right then was going to be what I have in the final encounter. The only secret in the map is a plasma rifle and two small cells, nowhere near enough to get through the initial stage of the final encounter. Speaking of the final encounter, when you flip the switch that activates it, you are flanked on the left by a cacodemon, flanked on the right by a pain elemental, and greeted by a MASSIVE horde of revenants on the front. And that's just the first part. I just sped through the rest, so I have no idea what other fuckery the level had planned for me. Did I froget to mention that the map gives you a ton of rocket ammo before this encounter? Good luck with the cacos and the elemental.

They're different games. There really isn't much like Turok 1, and the easiest way I can describe it is Quake doing Super Mario 64. The combat is just to clear areas temporarily, and the primary idea of the game is platforming and exploration in gigantic maps to find collectibles that unlock later levels.

Turok 2 is closer to a traditional shooter and has less platforming or action-adventure design, but the maps are still huge and there's still a good amount of exploring compared to most shooters, and even some backtracking to earlier to use abilities that you unlock later in the game.

They're both really interesting and pretty good.

I am in the process of making a weapon mod where each weapon has at least 2 variants for both primary and secondary fire, switched individually so they can be combined however the user wants
It is Heretic-themed though

1) Fists - regular punch/powerpunch and Synthfire shock (one is like vanilla, 2 = doublewhammy, but eats special gauge)
1a) Hammer - Smacking/hookshot, Throwing/Boomerang
2)Emberwand - hitscan/burst,Projectile(more powerful)/slash(lookitup on realm667). Burst can fire both hitscan and projectiles depending on what's selected
3)Crossbow (ether mode) - vanilla singleshot/minigrenade, dualshot/homing(fires bunch of weak bolts with very slight homing)
3a)Crossbow (material/shock mode) - single iron bolt/Short range "dispersion" wave, Flak/FlakGrenade (like UT flakcannon)
4)Dragon Staff (remade dragonclaw) - Rapid fire - each claw individually/slower fire(all 3 claws at once), charged/shock ball (like UT ASMD, with combo too)
5)Firemace (remade) - shrapnel balls(explode on impact with 3 low velocity shrap pieces)/Charged multi-ball (same mechanics as Ges altfire in UT'99), Bouncy balls that re-aim on target after each bounce (but no shrapnel)/Mine-charged ball(same as Ges altfire in UT4)

I last played Quake very long time ago. I wanted to play it in the pixel glory and not use HD packs. I tinkered quite a bit and found Qore mod, which adds more gibs bit like Brutal Doom. I really do love the way it looks altough someone here probably hates it.
However, what is the "best" engine for Quake 2? I'm looking for something which adds dynamic shadows as I like the way it creates atmosphere but I don't like any texture mods though.

I literally played Quake over 12 years ago or something. I was looking at Quake 2 but it doesn't have similar charm when it comes to esthetics. I think Quake was still enough low poly to be passable as step between sprites and real 3d but Quake 2 already looks like PS2 game with blurry textures. Maybe it's just me. Then, when enabling straight sampling without interpolation Quake 2 still looks so different. And I still haven't found out the best engine to play with. I have tried couple but they are all more or less bad.
I still need to finish Quake though so there's lot to play. I remember how much I tweaked that game on my Pentium to be able to run it at least 24 fps back then.

After two years, inspired by the shitstorm that is the latest cacowards, I've turned my pile of random shit into an even bigger pile of random shit!

I'm playing Shadow Warrior Redux and just got into retro fps, gotta say they are very fun games. Have couple questions:

Keyboard and mouse is fine, you were supposed to play the game using the mouse to turn, though you couldn't look up and down (because the 2D render distorts too much).

It's worth playing through at least the first three episodes on Chocolate Doom or PrBoom, just to get a feel for Vanilla, then move on to mods to see just how different your experience gets. The modern features I'm the most fond of is really just freelook+no autoaim (aiming freely is much more comfy to me), and OpenGL with true colors, because the original way the game renders graphics kind of washes out colors and murks them out a lot of the time, the texture and sprite work in Doom is really beautiful to me and OpenGL generally gives you a much better look.

I use jumping and ducking for combat a lot, it makes it feel more dynamic and there's some daring maneuvers you can do. I generally avoid using those features if I know they'll be sequence breaking, aside from maybe taking a shortcut back to somewhere I've already got access to, or crawling or jumping into some space to save my skin from some sort of horrible fate.

I'm already bending so many rules with freelook, no auto-aim, and mods, so I'm alright with bending those too.

I know mods can disable jumping and crouching if they want to, but honestly, I'd prefer an opposite approach - crouching and jumping is disabled UNLESS mod is explicitly flagged as requiring these.

The same goes with mouselook - as a compromise I set mouselook speed to like 0.4 (compared to turning speed of 1.2) so if I REALLY need to I can use mouselook if it's necessary to progress, but the low speed will discourage me from doing so otherwise.

The smooth doom is pretty nice. The chaingun actually feels impactful now. The perkristian mod I didn't find any actual difference. Dunno why. Guess I'm gonna just go with smooth doom and the metal sound pack I already had, thanks lads.

ZDoom hits final release. It is done, no more updates ever.
One guy who is knowledgable of all the glitches and bugs ZDoom has creates a glitchwad that heavily abuses every single visual glitch there is, and twist it all in an interesting manner as a way to pay a tribute to the engine, that is a Lilith.pk3
Obviously all that crap does not work on any other engine.
People start to play on wrong engines like GZDoom, see none of the glitchy shit they were promised, game crashes at map 03. They complain
So the guy implements a special message that prevents you from playingthe game on the wrong engine.

Initially Graf Zahl, the dev of GZD took offense to that prevention. He was convinced that users should be able to use whatever engine they want, evenif that explicitly breaks the mod, negates its purpose as a tribute to acertain engine, and leads to a game crash.
Graf fears the slippery slope that would make other modders to restrict their creations to a specific engine versions, so they would become unplayable not because of him, but because of them preventing players from playing.
Graf is told he is being retarded, there's drama in the forum.

Effort and required knowledge put into the Lilith gets noticed, it gets a Cacoward.
Graf becomes Groß Salz, spills spaghetty, stirs the drama, threatens to leave.
People tell him he is wrong in his faggotry.

According to what I've heard from people who've talked with him non-publicly, he's a very eccentric person. Almost pathologically shy and doesn't have a single friend in the entire community, never answers or sends private messages, has a discord account and is 'friends' with the rest of the staff but never talks to them etc.

It's not necessarily autism (which gets thrown around kind of a lot) but some sort of personality disorder seems likely. Anyway, despite all the bad attitude he's shown towards the community and other developers I still appreciate everything he's done for the port.
