Hey vr, I have some time over christmas and am just getting into my snes again. I am looking for some casual but challenging games to enjoy. I am not really into any games that take a lot of story reading or very complex tactics, mechanisms, etc. to learn before being able to play properly. Yet I also need something challenging and it really doesn't have to be a jump and run game, I would happily give rpgs etc a go if not as previously described. Also Mega Drive suggestions would be acceptable, though my childhood was all snes so I somehow just enjoy them more.

Have previously completed and enjoyed:
Super Probotector (aka Contra 3)
Super Metroid (though stuck on that bomb jump bit right now)
Castlevania
Mario World
Final Fight 3
Knights of the round

Please give some good suggestions, since i play emulators, i have no instructions and am not keen on long researching before playing. Thanks!

Gonna add super ghouls and ghosts, mariokart, f-zero, wild guns, mega man and donkey kong series. They are not all challenging games but ones i have played a fair bit anyway.

Pocky & Rocky, Umihara Kawase, Axelay, Puyo Puyo Tsu, Majyuuou

All simple challenging games with little/ignorable story

Battletoads Double Dragon should keep you busy for a bit. The theme song even ripped off a Duran Duran song!

And Duran Duran ripped off all those black funk bands, ahh the circle of life.

Thanks for the suggestions, will give these a go. I know its probably a lot to ask, but any chance of an rpg, tactics or zelda style game i could enjoy without much research and lots of story watching?

Was trying out tactics ogre but it might need a lot of research after all. Also Shin Megami Tensei, but not sure this will be even slightly challenging..

Thanks for these too, suprised about Gundam suggestions, i assumed I wouldn't be able to play it without instructions or googling..

Try Secret of Evermore. It's like Zelda with more story. The story parts tend to move at a pretty quick pace though.

Have you played the BS Zelda games? Those seem to be a little obscure, but they're a lot of fun.

actually talking loner fun here, since i only have one joypad (and no retro gamer mates ;_;)

>>4468707
will try, though more story sounds bad, if it moves fast i am actually fine with story.

Am interested, don't know what BS in BS Zelda is.. I have played gameboy zelda (ocarina of time) if that is what you mean..

>24 megs of action
>actually game file is 2mb

what did they mean by this? is the modern encoding allowing all this saving of disk space? Where they lying or referring to something completely different?

Also wanted to say i love the modern rom/emulator world, I spent plenty of money getting games back in the day, so I feel i deserve this and the ease of just getting casual advice and testing things til you find one you like is just amazing. Thanks for the help everyone btw.

They were Zelda games designed for the Japan-only Satellaview attachment. There's been attempts to restore and translate them over the years:

The site is a little (very) dated though, and is full of weird pointless romhacks. Best to just download the first patched rom under the game files.

Metal Warriors

How has no one mentioned Metal Warriors? Very possibly the best action game on the system.
