I used to have dreams about 2D Zelda games.
I'd find a new portion of the map I've never seen before and in exploring it, it kept getting bigger and bigger.
Until I was like, wait, this is impossible. There's only so many squares on the map. How did I get here? So I'd try backtrack, but it was all different.

Often, I'll have dreams in which I own a large collection of retro games. I browse my shelves, pick out a game (sometimes real, sometimes not quite), and play it.

When I was younger, I used to have vivid dreams about pic related — especially the heaven/hell level.

I've had a recurring dream since I was a kid where I'd be walking around in a mostly-abandoned mall, and there was a game store inside that had all sorts of rare or non-existent games. Sometimes there's an arcade, too.

>> No.4464368

I think I remember dreaming about playing some different Japanese version of Mario 3 as a kid. I was very fascinated by the screenshots on the US box that didn't match the content of the game, so it not too surprising; probably what started my fascination with pre-final versions of games. Other than that, maybe some about finding appealing auction listings or rare games in a shop. I also have some sort of NOS fascination, not always about games, but just about finding sealed 90s toys in a modern-day store.

I only dream about walking into second hand stores and finding games that I've wanted for years, buried in the DVD/CD sections or in the back of the place. Usually Saturn/Playstation and NES stuff.
Then I wake up and remember that I don't even have a Saturn and I loaned my Playstation to my brother.

I've had similar dreams, too.
I once had a dream where I was in a retro game second hand shop and they had all sorts of weird carts and consoles I had never seen before.
I remember they had a console with games that came on CED format, it was amazing.

I think it's mostly because I can't really find anything new and exciting in the wild, either because the market has dried up or because I already have almost everything I was looking for, so my brain compensates by creating new and exciting scenarios.

The ultimate pain of the collector. The correct answer is: when you run out of things to collect, start making.

>I think it's mostly because I can't really find anything new and exciting in the wild, either because the market has dried up or because I already have almost everything I was looking for
Yeah, that's a good theory. When I first got into retro collecting about 2 years ago I loved the experience of stepping into a retro store because it sort of brought me back to my childhood. It was like, I used to go to the store to buy Genesis and N64 games all those years ago, and now I get to do it again! But the experience is already a lot less special now because I basically have all the major games I want for all the consoles that were mainstream in the US. There's still tons of stuff that I would love to collect for consoles like the PC-FX, AES, NGPC, etc, but the stores around me basically never have anything that rare. So if I want to buy anything now I'm basically restricted to eBay, which is fine but it doesn't have the same nostalgia associated with it.

It sort of reminds me of how excited I was when 5th and 6th gen came out and I thought the basic paradigm of "go to store, get more powerful console and better games, repeat" would just continue for eternity and I thought that games would just keep getting bigger and better forever. But now there's so much cancer in modern gaming and people are talking about the end of consoles and the end of games being distributed on physical media. But then I realize that >>4471750 is right, which is why I want to make my own games, so I can pass on the magic of gaming to the people who come after me.

I can't remember, I probably did many times as a kid.
Only one that I can actually remember is from the early 00s, so it's not retro anymore I guess, but I dreamt about a 2D fighting game similar to KOF, but instead of SNK characters, it was visual kei guys duking it out. It was amazing, pic related was one of the selectable characters.
I was disappointed when I woke up.
