Any Turbo Grafix 16 fans here? I loved this system back in the day! Dungeon Explorer was like a more interesting Zelda meets Gauntlet in a way.

>> No.4464010

Yep I loved this niche overlooked console. I used to have a ton more games for it that I no longer have. Unfortunately for it since it didn't sell as much as the Genesis or SNES it doesn't have the same depth in its game catalogue. Those cards were also nicer looking than the competition.

Yes, probably my favorite console alongside the Megadrive, though mostly for its library of shmups for me.

it would of done so much better if the United States release was not delayed by 2 years putting it's release within a week of the Sega Genesis coming out, even dispite this it sold decently against the genesis at first until the snes came out and the TG16 was completely left in the dust and forgotten.

>> No.4464340

I always recommend the game Crater Maze for TG-16.

many TG16 games got the Megaman 1 boxart treatment as well.

it would of done so much better if it came out within the 1986-1987 window like it's japanese counterpart

artwork wasn't butchered in localization

better packins or rotated out packins as better games came out like bonk's adventure or blazing lazers instead of keith courage.

Yes, great system. Excellent for shooters and RPGs, decent platformer selection. Shame about the beatemups

Most of the good games were either by Hudson, or 3rd party ports by NEC Avenue (or home electronics)

An absolute goldmine of Taito, Falcon and Namco games too

Here’s some of my favorites

HuCard
>bonk 2
>liquid kids
>super dodgeball
>atomic robo kid
>mr heli
>salamander
>wonder boy 3 dragon trap
>bomberman 93

CD
>rondo
>river city ransom
>tenchi wo kurau
>gain ground
>strider (flawed but has new content)
>rainbow islands (best version)

I've recently started looking into the library through emulation. I can't remember ever seeing this console in person as a kid, or even any of the used games for sale at Funcoland. Because of this I always overlooked the console. The Order of the Griffon Dungeons and Dragons game is one of the best adaptations you can find on a console which is pretty neat.

Would've is the term you're looking for. "Would of" is horseshit younglings these days do because they can't be fucked to spell the conjunction of "Would" and "Have".

And no, it really wouldn't have done that much better. It was practically and arcade machine, with games like Shinobi, R-Type, and the like coming out for it. It doesn't have the bulk of games that were original for it's platform, and we've seen how well home arcade machines have done in the past, this one included.
True, it came out first, but it was on the lower end of the spectrum of consoles that came out in its generation because technically it was 16-bit, but only because it had a 16-bit GPU pushing an 8-bit CPU. Even though it could display the most colors out of it's generation, it still couldn't compete sprite-wise. The only thing it did amazingly correct was digital audio. The Hu-card system, as fun as the games on it were, got left in the dust and it's only saving grace was the CD attachment, since everyone was already looking for the new cool thing.

This is coming from a guy who has PC-Engine and loved the TG-16 way back in the day.

>>4464649
the pc engine was supposed to compete with the famicom, it was so slow to release in the United States it was dealing with an entirely new generation of hardware that could out perform it.

also grammar Nazi shit is just you being an asshole you know full well correcting people won't actually get them to fix anything.

>> No.4464678

PC Engine CD is really great for the sweet redbook soundtracks

>> No.4464770

>>4464657
TG16 is the beginning of the 4th generation.
It was made to compete with the famicom, and it would have won that battle if Nintendo and Sega weren't already working on 16-bit consoles. It was the first in it's generation and ended up getting trampled by consoles that were much stronger.
The point still stands that it was an arcade machine, for most purposes. I'm not saying it wasn't fun, but you still are missing the point of what happened and that it was a mix of many things that lead to it failing in the USA.

>> No.4464798

>>4464770
my entire point was NEC blew their chance of a decent install base before their competitors swept the rug out from under them.

the PC engine actually was 2nd place during the 16-bit console war in japan which proved it had the ability to throw it's weight around even though it was so much weaker.

while in the united states it lost the chance of an early lead of 2 whole years of sales before the genesis came out and instead was sold within a week of the genesis launch where it did alright against for a short while before the snes came out and nobody cared anymore with the 16-bit era being remembered as Genesis vs Super Nintendo almost exclusively.

It didn't even do that well against the Genesis, and because Sega started up the ads against Nintendo, everyone forgot about NEC in general outside of Monitors.

There was a lot stacked against the TurboGrafix, and saying it did well in Japan doesn't make the console that much less of a flop. The Saturn did well in Japan, and it's still a flop. Japan is literally the only place where home arcade-port machines did well. The rest of the world gave 0 fucks.

It was nice to have games the size of a credit card.
If they decided to redesign and re-release console/and gamest how small would it be?

>> No.4465312

>>4465124
Roughly the same size as 3DS or Switch carts. It's just a modified SD card, in all honesty.

loved my turboduo... thing was built like shit tho. one of the regulators got scorching hot, causing it to freeze up after 30minutes or so. so i stuck a metal rod against it, to help extract some of the heat and later used arctic alumina with a chopped up p3 heatsink to fix it permanently.

PC Engine was known for its arcade ports and shooters, but hucard sales tanked when the super famicom came out. That's when the CD games carved out a niche for JRPGs and borderline hentai

NEC made plenty of bone headed decisions though. The supergrafx, shuttle and LT were absolutely retarded ideas. The arcade card also reeked of desperation

>>4469312
definitely this. not everything was great...altered beast and monster world were both noticeably inferior, but plenty of the sega games were really good on pce

>gain ground
>bonanza bros
>fantasy Zone
>shinobi (missing features but had all music and was lightning fast)
>outrun

>cotton

Westone also made two excellent pc engine exclusives, Aoi Blink and Blood Gear
