The Earthbound fanbase was terrible even before Undertale came out.

That said, should a game's fanbase really dictate how you feel about said game? Earthbound is a good game (and so is Undertale, for that matter). Yeah, neither should be considered the greatest games of all time, and they get a disproportionate amount of praise by a very vocal minority, but who cares? If you refuse to enjoy something because someone you don't like enjoys it as well, you're only depriving yourself of nice things out of spite.

Earthbound was never good. MAYBE if we'd gotten Mother 1 in the US there would have been enough of an existing fanbase to sell the game but there wasn't and literally cases and cases of brand new copies sat in warehouses for years. This really is a fair one, unless you keep stocked on the Skip Sandwiches moving is just really slow. Emulator fast forwards definitely changed my experience of this game for the better but it's not a legit feature of the game so worth taking into consideration. Mother 3 really fixed the pacing

>> No.4462497

>>4462491
Is Earthbound even considered a long RPG? I think it ranks between the 20 to 30 hours, maybe 40. That's pretty tame compared to most other really popular RPGs, especially those on PS1 with long cutscenes, loading times, etc.
I can understand a guy in 1995, before PS1 RPGs existed, to think that Earthbound was long... but then again, classic RPGs like Dragon Quest III or FF VI are way longer.

>> No.4462506

>>4462497
it's not long, it's slow

>> No.4462512

>>4462506
I think compared to many other classic RPGs, Earthbound's pacing is fairly alright, it doesn't really have that many open-ended areas and you just go from city to city in a streamlined way, even though it gives the illusion of being kind of "Open world" like Mother 1.
But yeah it could have used a run button like Mother 3 or the Mother 1 english proto/GBA port.

What I said was that if you LOVE it, chances are you're dumb. Your poor reading comprehension and reactionary attitude do little to indicate otherwise.

Consider the Squaresoft RPGs released before and after, Final Fantasy 6 and Chrono Trigger. Earthbound looks and plays like a much older game. Its story and humor are childish. It's just simply and objectively not very good.

The fanbase is annoying but really it's mostly because it is representative of everything terrible about the retro gaming market. Its price is bloated due to scalpers, it was a popular game for "pseudo intellectual" hipsters who bought a copy and put it on a shelf to look at, and it has been an easy game for youtubers to use as click bait for "L@@K RARE FIND" videos.

Personally it's my favorite game ever made honestly and I myself even spent $220 on a copy of it. All it really is is a dragon quest clone with a retro sci fi look and some silly dialouge but that really appeals to me personally.

>> No.4463414

What mechanics? The same turn based battle system every other game uses? And even that system works differently from DQ as it is rhythm based. Or maybe you're talking about the dragon quest class system mechanics that it copied or monster collecting that it copied? No that's not there. Perhaps it uses a similar inventory and item management system? That's radically different also. Maybe you're talking about the "mechanics" of it being a top down 2D RPG where you interact with the world through an action button. In that case it copied every single other rpg ever made.

>> No.4463626

>>4463549
I've never seen anybody put forward an argument as to why it's like DQ other than the battle window looks similar. Nothing about the core gameplay is the same as a DQ experience, from how one would grind, to how one traverses the world and world map, to what class system and monster collecting, they are nothing like one another.

I think it was a bit "edgy" when it came out. Jokes were out of the ordinary, and it was just absurd. You called your work-a-holic dad to save the game lol. My buddy had the boxed set, and we all played the crap out of it. At the end of the day, It is the same experience for everyone. Very little variance. You can grind if you want, but it is never necessary. The humor I think set it apart. The Mexican slot machine? Dinosaurs? Bubble gum chewing apes?

The ending sucks, and unless you use a guide or someone tells you, you may lose the last battle over and over. I know I did.

All this because of your fat greedy spoiled rich neighbor.
