Breath of Fire (GBA) now has both a color and sound restoration patch. This on top of the GBA version's improvements and other available patches (like text cleanup patch which change some names to what would later become canon names like Bleu to Deis and Tyr to Myria) now make this version the definitive version. The sound restoration patch was done by the same guy behind the FF GBA music patches.

Has anyone tried the "Breath of Fire Improved" hack? Is it too hard or does it just do what it says it does? "play more like the later games in the series, plus a few tweaks"

Hell yeah. No need for SNES anymore, just slap on the color hack, text cleanup, and sound restoration.

What's the point of tweaking exp and gold rates when the battle system is the same old boring shit

>> No.4461609

>>4461607
Less grinding. IIRC the GBA versions also tweaked the encounter rate to be lower. So you do less of the same old boring shit, making it less boring.

That's cool but Marble3 items actually fucking work as intended in BoF1 and completely negate encounters.

I'm sorry, is swapping names supposed to make it on par with the SNES fan-translation, or is the GBA version fully fixed?

And more importantly, why the fuck hasn't anyone retranslated the first game? I want to know what the fuck Ryu's sister was talking about when she died.

>>4461619
Still just stuff to clean up the item names and update terms, I'm afraid.

I heard after BoF2's translation that the first GBA game was going to get the same treatment from the same guy. Guess it never panned out.

I believe the experience gains in the GBA games were straight-up doubled. That said, why not just patch the SNES versions to do that instead of trying to fix a version which will still be inferior post-patching because of a cropped screen?

>> No.4461631

Too bad the game needs an entire re-write and not just a simple name fix patch.

>> No.4461637

So I just read some reviews/thoughts on the BoF Improved hack and it seem that the changes weren't too indepth. i.e Spell damage and MP costs are unchanged so Bleu's later spells still have a weird MP cost to damage relationship, Puka is even more broken than before, there's still no reason to not use Karn's fusions over the fusion recipe characters, etc.

>>4461619
It's the same original translation from the SNES game minus the name changes. There was some talk on the Dragon Tear forums of BoF1 getting a similar retranslation to 2, but those forums are now dead and the talk of the project was years ago and considering there's no news/announcement/finished patch I guess it's dead.

Apparently the GBA games are easier to hack for some reason. I saw that mentioned as a rebuttal to someone asking why no one's hacking the SNES rom instead. So my guess is better docs and debugging tools are available.

And honestly, once BoF1's sound and color is fixed, the other bonuses like the new UI are major enough for me to overlook the resolution drop.

GBA games are easier to hack, specially to insert text translations, because the console itself can see the whole memory of the cartridge at once. So no stuff like changing banks like in NES/SNES games. You can just put your translated text anywhere in the ROM and point to it.

It's a turn based RPG, does that really matter that much? I can understand with platformers and such, but it really doesn't matter.

Hopefully a NEW retranslation, because while technically impressive, the writing of the SNES retranslation is abysmal.

Yeah, I mean, I'm not saying that it isn't infinitely better than the original translation but there are certain points (I remember in Jean's scenario specifically) where you can tell that the translator tried SO HARD to channel Woosley that the dialog just ends up being cringey

>> No.4462290

Yes, what an improvement. Let's make the game give you a shitload of gold and exp to remove any semblance of difficulty and combat strategy. Jesus Christ, jrpg remakes are disgusting.

It was never a remake, just a lazier type of port. Though granted, technically it's better off than the FF ports when it comes to managing speed.

Yeah, technically speaking the BoF ports are better than the FF ones. I've never experienced any slow down and battles in 2 can get much flashier than VI's.

I actually have BoFIV in the mail at the moment, expected to come tomorrow at earliest. I've already played it on my hacked psp some time ago but I want to do a new playthrough since I didn't fully appreciate some of the smaller things like the fairy village and fishing. Looking forward to actually playing it on a crt, the small screen of the psp really can't capture how beautiful it is.

I think that BoF1 has a decentish translation outside of the name shortening due to the character limit. There's names changes like Builder to Ox (and weird ones like Bleu to Deis and Danq to Karn) but what most people would notice are definitely the item names which make the game feel more dated than it is. You can tell what most things are, but there's stuff like "W.Ptn", "Mrbl3" and things that just don't look good like "HrGlas" and "LoveBR".

BoF2 on the other hand has all of BoF1's problems and then some:

BoF1's translation is bad in the sense that you sometimes don't have any idea what just happened. There is an event someone mentioned above, where a party member is being possessed by a ghost. You probably need to watch that scene 2 or 3 times to understand what happened, because the text doesn't make any sense.
