There is something that has been grinding my gears. We all have our good old collections, connected to our good old tvs, some use crts some dont, some go rf, some go rgb.

But in the midst of it, do we neglect sound quality? Its very rare to see a setup here that includes anything to improve the sound side of retro vydea.

Do you guys connect your setup to an amplifier or equalizer? Do you recommend?

Also battlestation thread

>> No.4460781

How many video games have sound quality high enough to justify this in the first place? Even modern games tend to use pretty heavy audio compression.

>> No.4460785

In another thread Anon successfully convinced me that the s/pdif mod for the snes wasn't a waste of time and money. I prefer the Genesis sound though and it's Yamaha chip only outputs analog. Same with most consoles although I'm pretty sure you could build a mixer into the New since the sound channels are separate. The biggest problem with analog audio output is noise but if your amp has a good ADC in it out should be able to sort it out. I actually have a couple pretty great sound systems both house and PA style but neither of them are hooked up. I may do the house one this Christmas.

comfy setup, anon, despite the controllers being wedged closely in the console cubbies.

At the end of the day I'm more biased towards sound. Currently in the market for 70s/80s hi-fi stuff with the silver finish and wood grain. I always thought it would be cool to have my vidya and music stations combined. Already have a decent tape deck and turntable so all I need are some nice speakers and an amplifier, maybe some other cool miscellaneous pieces of equipment.

I have an early 2000s receiver which Dolby ProLogic I and II on it for those N64 games which had surround (and some SNES games)

I also get the added bonus of running the sound through my high end speakers instead of the shitty built-in TV speakers

addendum: you could actually buy an SPDIF mod for snes if you realllly wanted to.

Technics is pretty cheap and nice 70s brand to look into, also various Kenwoods and Yamahas would be nice Marantz is probably top of the line but expensive

Thanks dude, unfortunatly i have the controllers like that because lack of space (that is my living room in a small appartment) and because im very lazy hehe, i just want to flick a switch, plug the controller and be ready to go

accordig to hi-fi enthusiasts, those all-in-ones are shit with bargain tier components. For video games it will probably sound fine though

I can vouch for Technics too though the really good stuff is still pretty expensive and in-demand.

I input the stereo into a cheap Sony amp which I mainly use with headphones. Headphones are my preferred way to play.

The C01 series dates from 1978 actually so it's a year older than me.

The SA-007 is from the mid-80s though.

I have a A/V receiver that I use for everything. It's not really much of a difference because RCA audio sucks dick. It only really makes a difference on systems that supported digital audio. It's nice for PS2

Good surround sound is a necessity to me.

Some Nintendo 64 games have very well-done Pro-Logic mixes.

Games with stereo audio mixes that incorporate 3D audio rendering tend to sound great when matrixed to 5.1 or higher (Silent Hill and Final Fantasy Tactics with its surround setting in particular)

Genesis games also sound great matrixed, the YM2612 could produce sounds that sweep the entire surroundscape.

There are precisely zero N64 games that support Pro Logic. Stereo or Dolby Surround mixes that just happen to sound good is another thing.

You want an amplifier with Dolby Prologic for Rogue Squadron at least. You'd be fine with a Sony or Onkyo if it still works (or better a new one). I don't know what people see in the 70s and 80s amplifiers. I have Marantz and Pioneer and I like our Onkyo 5.1 receiver more.

I run audio into a Behringer headphone distribution amp, one output goes into my capture box, the other output goes into a cheap set of Logitech pc speakers via an RCA to 3.5 mm adapter. The speakers sit on top of my PVM and sound great, but most of the time I plug my Sony MDR-V6s into the speakers' headphone jack.

We don't but obviously many do. However just because you don't see a sound system doesn't mean it doesn't exist. If you took a pic like that of my setup you'd have no idea there was a sound system because all visible parts are outside the frame. I started hooking my game systems into the stereo system as soon as they started putting out decent music in the mid 80's and been doing it ever since. I use exactly the same hifi systems for games I use for TV/Music.

PS That's a terrible way to display your shelf collection. Which is clearly what it is since that shit's unusable. Also fish tank on top of electronics. lol

TV speakers suck, but then again they are part of "the experience"

CRT TV has three inputs:

Video
Stereo-L
Stereo-R

I push the power button on the TV
I turn the switch on the console

I play the game

I'm not neglecting shit. It's perfect just the way it is.
