Underrated PS1 games that AREN'T Wild 9? (I literally hear this recommended so often I can't even call it underrated anymore.)

What's next? You're gonna say Comix Zone for genesis ain't a hidden gem or underrated anymore?

Ok it's not, it did get mentioned too much.

How is this a hidden underrated gem thread where he mentions Ehrgeiz and Incredible Crisis? Those games suck, and I know because I owned them.

>> No.4455571

>>4455367
They don't suck but they've certainly been overrated in the age of people playing retro games always searching for that next hidden gem. A lot of very average games from the era have seen that happen.

Fuck who thinks what is underated or a hidden gem and lets talk about this game. Incredible underwater atmosphere and lore plus such an amazing soundtrack. Imagine the twisted metal 2 soundtrack but gone full nautical.

Do you guys even know you can hold all 4 shoulder buttons and combo your weapons right into a pricks face all at once?

They actually completely do suck. They weren't even average back in the day, they were critical flops then as much as now. They are NOT gems and anyone who hasn't played isn't missing out on shit.

>> No.4455757

That's not underrated by any means. They have characters in MvC as well, so it's not unpopular either.

Not a single one of them (except Sakura, who is already a Street Fighter character) is playable in any MvC game. At best, some Hero’s and Heralds cards

There's also Descent 1 and 2 (which are ports of the original DOS games with CD-quality music and coloured lighting, and a new level set for Descent 2. might require interpreter mode on emulator)
LSD Dream Emulator (NTSC-J only)
Armored Core 1, Project Phantasma, Master of Arena
Treasures of the Deep (This one's pretty goddamn brutal, like Critical Depth with subs and such but is a real test of perseverance and caution.)

Look, mate if you ever get it play the first level on normal and make sure you kill every yellow beetle before it passes you and changes colour. There's a secret in it for you.

You think the first 15 levels are all? Nope there's a second set that repeats the levels but with a new termite enemy that blocks off sections of the tunnel like Tempest. There's also 15 bonus levels for each level as well.

LSDDemu has no goal other than explore the dreams presented to you (being a few locations, touching walls and objects will "link" you between them or unlock cutscenes) and note the changes until you get to day 365. For a lot of people it terrifies them at first until you get used to the craziness. Based on a real dream journal that used to come with the game. The music is almost entirely randomised with patterns and instrument sets to go with them. Some songs are almost silent an omninous hum in the background that comes in and out. There's speculation the game's actually about an alien entity probing the mind of a middle aged woman, with a certain well-dressed avatar that attacks you being an indicator of their prescence.

>Rogue Trip: Vacation 2012
After SingleTrac was bought out by GT Interactive the Twisted Metal franchise was handed off to 989, who had worked on the earlier games under the name Sony Interactive Studios America. Twisted Metal 3 and 4 were the result of this, and neither one had the solid gameplay and controls 1 or 2 did. SingleTrac went on to create Rogue Trip to do something with the car combat experience they had. While not as great as TM 1 or 2, it's still a solid car combat game and far more playable than TM 3 or 4.

Is primal rage a good port?

>> No.4456491

>>4456328
It's interesting, because it has almost the same gameplay and controls as the ps2 edition of TM Head on. But other than that, it's not that great.

The problem was that rogue trip had teribad level layouts, lots of the weapons were just stupid, battles took forever because nothing did any decent damage, and photo ops ruined the flow of single player.

I will.say that I liked the characters though. PMthey legit felt like unused TM character ideas.

It was an ok attempt at reclaiming lost glory that was indeed better than TM 3 and 4, but still juat not worth bothering with.

Road Rash is fun single player only as a racding game. You won't get into fights. If you want to fight, play the N64 version.

Tomba 1

Diablo has a good port.

Fade to Black is different. Flashback sequel.

Wild Arms is a fun JRPG, but bog standard.

Probably all of these are well known and not underrated...

It was released virtually AND it's on multiple Genesis collections. It's about as much of a hidden gem as Beyond Oasis.

>>4455678
I really wanted to like PowerSlave, but the fact the most common early enemies are practically impossible to hit with the sword (and you shouldn't have to waste ammo on them in the first place) was just the first step to "This is far more frustrating than it is fun." The biggest killer is just the fact that I can't think of ANY reason to play this over Doom, Quake, Hexen, Blood, Duke Nukem, Turok, etc.

>>4455739
I honestly went in expecting to be very underwhelmed, or even disappointed, by Critical Depth. I love water themes and the idea of underwater games and I'm always looking for good ones. I also love Twisted Metal, so when I saw this existed I was like "Hell yes"... but then so many reviews said it was mediocre (at best) and you'd be fighting with the controls constantly. I fucking LOVE the controls, it perfectly captures how underwater vessel controls SHOULD feel, and the game is just plain fun.

Love the maps, very expansive and each has their own appeal (though some are a little meh), and yeah... the music is really solid.
