Mario 64, if only because of how often its imagery and music is used in vaporwave.

Pretty much any early 3D title is more aesthetic, especially weird low-budget stuff on like the Jaguar. And anything on the Dreamcast.

I know vaporwave encompasses both the 80s and 90s, but I view it as more of a 90s thing because 90s video games and anime are remixed into vaporwave way more often than 80s games/anime it seems. And it's hard for me to think of the NES as really being aesthetic at all. 8 bit imagery has been taken over by bandwagon hipsters.

The aesthetics of vaporwave is like a 90s fever dream. Imagine waking up in the middle of the night and your badly tuned CRT TV was turned on the whole time. In the darkness you can barely focus your eyes on the light emanating from it. https://beerontherug.bandcamp.com/album/loud-formations

>Loud Formations is a varied collection of works from over the past 4 years, exploring the aesthetics of the YM2612 sound chip’s FM synthesis. To use the sounds, YM2612 patches were converted via a python script into Yamaha DX7 SYX files. The album aims to evoke the postmodern aesthetic of the early to mid 90s through reverse emulation. The YM2612 is basically a stripped down Yamaha DX7, and the music produced for the YM2612 (Sega™ Genesis) chip emulated the sometimes outdated sounds of New Jack Swing, R&B, Pop, Hip-Hop, Techno, and commercial Muzak. The songs on this album aim to explore those genres, in an updated vernacular, with a compiled YM2612 patch library.

No, that's already late 90s. Vaporwave aesthetics are generally early 3D renders and some 16-bit art, so it's very specifically early 90s. Workstations used by graphics companies the average pleb couldn't afford define it. If we're strictly talking about consoles then it's gen 4.

>it's very specifically early 90s
It's not. It covers the entirety of the 80s and 90s. Windows 95 imagery is a big part of vaporwave, and I don't think that qualifies as "very specifically early 90s". Serial Experiments Lain is also a popular source for vaporwave material and that's late 90s.

>If we're strictly talking about consoles then it's gen 4
Well that's just nonsense. When vaporwave references video games, the vast majority of the time it's using something related to the PS1/N64/Saturn. I'd go so far as to say I've seen more 6th gen references than 4th gen.

>> No.4459484

>>4459235
I think the early 6th gen is aesthetic. I remember flipping through EGM and looking at the previews of early PS2 and Xbox games and thinking "this is it, this is the future, it's here." But a few years into 6th gen it definitely wasn't feeling aesthetic anymore. Coincidentally that's also when I think gaming in general started to decline. I'm probably just describing idiosyncratic personal preferences here rather than anything objective.

I've heard other people say that the aesthetic officially ended with 9/11, which sounds reasonable to me, although that would exclude the entirety of the Gamecube and Xbox and include only a little of the PS2.

No, it does not. Synthwave is distinctly 80s with wireframe Tron shit and dark palettes (see: the game OP was claiming was vaporwave). Windows 95 is acceptable because it was basically the tail end of the time period vaporwave evokes. Kids who jumped on the meme bandwagon are forcing trap music and simpsonswave and Mario 64 and all sorts of other cancer like 6th gen consoles because they have no fucking clue what vaporwave is about and weren't even alive in the early 90s or the late 80s for that matter. They probably weren't even aware of it when it first surfaced a few years ago and just read about it on Reddit in 2016 and proceeded to spam youtube with forced memes that miss the point.

I guess all I can say is that I'm sorry that you don't like this prominent strand of the vaporwave movement, but you can't deny that there's a plethora of material labelled "vaporwave" that references mid-late 90s and 5th gen console stuff. If they had home movies on VHS or obscure tapes from local bands, I figure they'd already own something to play those with. It stand to reason that they're buying these to play old commercial releases, but commercial movie releases on VHS were never that good, and cassette tapes aren't exactly vinyl. Cyberpunk is an AGI calling payphones as you walk past them to grab your attention. It is amazing sex in a fully immersive VR made out of geometric shapes and neon colors. It's bulky, noisy military prosthetics that hook directly into your nervous system. From our perspective that shit is obviously primitive in some ways, but it does what our shit can't. And, importantly, it actually works. For comparison, our timeline is your cell phone failing to wake you up in the morning because the vendor botch a software update. It is nearly photorealistic VR that has you mesmerized until the framerate drops so much you want to barf, all because you left a resource-hungry webpage open in the background. It's wireless controllers disconnecting at the least opportune moment. Our shit is slicker and prettier, but it's broken to fuck and back.

vaporwave is stupid. old media is already good and stands on its own. It doesnt need some hipster to "revive" it.

it's pretty lazy anway, slow down the music, give it some echo and color everything in aqua and violet/pink

Your gen z is showing. No one born before 1985 would ever ask that. She's on the wrong side of 50 now and I'd still suck a fart out of her ass.

Just look at a bunch of vaporwave art and music and you'll pick up the patterns pretty quickly. It's not just some vague "everything".

People are confusing vaporwave with nostalgia.
Although vaporwave might just be nostalgia after all, but nostalgia for a specific time period, which you might not even have been experienced.

There are some pretty dank SM64 re-skins out there. Not sure about a specifically vaporwave aesthetic one though.
